One of my gsd's has become itchy recently so today I bathed her in Malaseb ad than gave her a rinse in Alpha Keri Oil as I have read it's quiet good for itchy dogs(apparently the Avon Skin So Soft is suitable as well)

I had previously not been able to find the cause of her scratching but when I was blow drying her I discovered she has an area on her back towards her tail that is red and blotchy where she scratches.I have also given her an antihistimane as well

Anyone else used the Oil before and had any results?i'd actually had it sitiing in the bathroom cupboard from when the kids used to get excema and when I saw it I remembered reading about using it for rinsing itchy dogs in so deceided I had nothing to loose

Interesting........ I have an itchy boy and I also have Avon Skin so Soft in the bathroom - guess who will be a guinea pig thia arvo  I have not heard of using Keri Oil, but I will try anything. Thanks for the info.

 well at least he will smell nice if it dosen't happen to work anyway as that Avon one smells lovely

My girl seems to be quite peaceful this afternoon after her bath earlier although I did give her an antihistimane tablet as well

Let us know how you find the Avon one with the itchies

I have used it on the long coats between baths .

I did for years use avon skin so soft BUT the dogs musnt have access to the sun during the peak time as it will burn the coat.

Avon has a perfumed smell so i wouldnt use it on a dog with issues.

It takes alot of scrubbing to wash it out of the coat .

I was recommended this by a Vet dermatologist for my whippet with allergy skin issues and it seems to keep her skin more moisturised and shiney

Just make sure you dilute it more than it says b/c they can end up a little oily

Yep I use it and love it. Keeps skin hydrated which helps with the itchies, and I have also wondered whether it can help to create a bit of a skin barrier to reduce the amount of allergens absorbed/coming into contact with the skin

I use Alpha Keri Oil on me and the dogs.

When I have had really itchy dogs I give them a bath and then soak in a bath with the oil added. Blow dry rather than use a towel and the result is an oiled dog. It won't stain furniture and takes a few days to be fully absorbed into the coat and skin. Don't have to use it often but when I have had to it works wonders on my BCs.

OK test carried out, dog now shining with the Avon stuff. He smells cute too! He looks a little greasy (he is a Wire Haired Foxie). The skin is showing and it is pink. I have not yet noticed any difference in the itchies but it is only a few hours. I did not dilute it (will if I try it again), but did rinse him well under his shower. Will come back with more details in a week or three.

I too was recommended it by a skin specialist and it seems to have made the dog less itchy and her coat is in better condition to the touch now. She is 30kg and I bath her weekly, and after shampooing and rinsing I mix 1-1.5 teaspoons of Alpha Keri with water in a 2 litre ice cream container and I sponge (or flannel) this all over her til it's used up. I thought I'd state her weight so you can see the small amount of AK used for a medium-sized dog. Then towel dry but try not to rub.

I use this on a brown dobe I am temporarily showing. His previous handler used this and it was recommended to me. I use it in between shows and lather it on, leave it on for a while and then wash off. Im not game enough to try it just before a show as it does leave him a little greasy at first. However he is nicer to touch since Ive been using it.

I too have an itchy dog. Most of the time when I look at her shin there's nothing there but a few flakes of dandruff. I've been giving her apple cider vinegar in her food for a long time & recently cut it down to once or twice a week, it hasn't made much difference & cut it back after reading that it can have side effects.

I really appreciate finding this thread & next time I go to the chemist will get some Alpha Kerri Oil to try. The vet told me to use omega oils on her food & bath in Aloveen which also had little effect. May be a few weeks but will get back with the results. I don't like to bath too often as this also makes her itchy even though I rinse well.

Further update on my trial with the Avon stuff. I had to bath him this morning as he was biting chunks out of himself. It looked like the Skins so Soft was irritating him. The redness has gone down and he is not nibbling so much. I wonder if it is worth buying some Alpha Keri to try on the ratbag.

maybe some fragrance in the Avon One was the culprit.I guess if you buy some Alpha Keri oil to try at least you can use it on yourself as well

I've not rinsed them in it, but I have applied it directly to affected areas... works just as well that way... but I do like your idea Stormie that it may cause a barrier, so I may try that for Asher and see if that helps reduce his reactions... having a bad night here again <sigh>

I would say it could have been a perfume issue in the Skin-So-Soft.

I use that in a spray bottle as an oil plus a very effective fly repellent so if it has that effect on bugs, then yes, it could be nasty on a dog which is prone to skin irritation.

Alpha Keri is good stuff, if you're after a heavier type of oil then the Ego oil is another good one but is harder to rinse from the coat.

On the rare occasions I put my dogs down in oil, I use either Alpha Keri or Ego....just a couple of capfuls in a tub of water and allow it to dry in the coat.

Hmm I'm going to try this on my allergy prone staffy and frenchie. We have tried quite a few things and though it is MUCH better than it used to be, it's not perfect.

I add Goochy's Green Lipped Muscle Powder to their food and the oldies move better and their coats are shiney as.

As for the scratching above tail, years ago we had a cattle dog like that and she was severely allergic to fleas and couldn't have one or she'd go crazy, so might be good to monitor this. The other issue she had was hormonal and she had to have added Omegas etc in her diet to assist but it seemed to be around "heat" times.

Would the Alpha Keri Oil be better than Seabreeze Oil for harsh coated dogs?

I was going to buy some Seabreeze Oil tomorrow, but if the Alpha Keri is just as good, I might try that as it will be cheaper for 3 giant scruffers!

Will it wash out quite easily for shows, or will my crispy coats turn soft'n'silky?:laugh:
