Im just starting basic training and struggling with my Yosh  Hes so stubborn. We go each Sunday and work at home.

Willow - Trying to get him to relax and down, and then starting on recall.

Yoshi - Trying to get him to sit... *sigh*

What method are you using? I wasn't having great success with my Newf where we had to use halters and weren't allowed to use food. I left there and now use food to train her and she hasn't looked back. She now picks up new things in about 3 tries and does it enthusiastically whereas with the other method she always seemed bored and unhappy. You need to both enjoy training if you are to be successful.

Using treats - doing the whole make them look up and butt hits the ground... But yosh decides to jump to try and get the treat instead of retreating back!! Then goes around in circles!! The trainer at our classes will keep trying with him. He loves the attention game (Treat in one hand and they have to pick it). Hes just so excited and has a load of fun but he doesnt like to concentrate  Doing the heel walking on a leash, he always tries to run and its just one of those things that we have to keep trying.

My DH is going to be buying them some new leads that hes looked into (Halti's?? off memory.. apparantly they are awesome for poodles??) and hoping we will have some more control so he listens  Hes such a boof! Too smart - he can open the door and knows exactly what Im saying.

Just a qquick suggestion for you... I have found that when dogs are jumping when luring into a sit its because you are holding the treat too high so they have to jump for it. If you put the treat basically on the dogs nose while they are standing and lure backwards but not too far up his nose should follow it and his but will go on the ground.

At the moment with Jet I am working with the "here & come" command (recall) Also he is seeing a behaviourist for his small case of fear agression so she told us to work on just how to handle normal day to day situations eg. me being mroe exciting to him, I have to ignore him when I first get home (which is hard when you see his little face)!

Lucy

Recall

General socialisation, especially with people

Some clicker training with shaping for fun (eg get in the box)

Getting her into the heel position. This is hard becasue she jsut doesn't "get" luring

Stop barking once I've answered the door

Fergus

Tricks for fun

Heeling - haven't really tried it with him

I've recently started using the Easy Walk harness (with the clip ring on the front!!) on both my new dog and other people's arm-pullers - can't recommend it enough. It enables me to easily keep him under control while working with him on keeping his attention on me and learning to walk on a loose leash.

Re halters: My friend has just switched her greyhound from a head halter to a sighthound collar and discovered what many people learn - unless you have also trained the dog very well in loose leash walking and heel, the halter only teaches them not to pull when they're wearing the halter. But when they go on a collar they've learnt nothing. She didn't want to keep using the halter because it was clearly distressing her dog to have a thing on her face and pulling her head around all the time.

I have been reading about you and Buddy

I daresay my new boy is probably similar in size and maybe breed mix.

Despite never having been lead trained before coming to us he doesn't pull - unless he sees a dog or a cat.

I am using a check chain to teach him to walk by my side. That is going well. But I don't find it useful at all for when he sees a dog or a cat, and all I can do really is hold on. Although I try to talk to him in a happy cheerful voice and keep walking by the other dog/cat.

Can you tell me Spottychick, how you think he would go on the easy walk harness?

Happy for any suggestions too as I have a lot to learn

Thanks Spottychick!

I will look at the easy harness

Tried putting the treat in all diff spots / diff angles etc

Last night had a win with Willow - he went competely down and stayed down

Yosh on the other hand decided to jump on him and run around in circles

Beckie and I are working on our Distance Control for UDX. :drink:

She was starting to come forward a lot after a few positions not good :)

so I decided to teach her to take a step back every time she stands up, especially from the sit,

(that's where she steps forward like she's lost her balance).

It is cool, she's doing it after a week, now I have to shape it so she doesn't take too many steps back.

When we started, she was running back  now she's a bit calmer, and nearly doing it the way I want.

Pax, Jarrah had a go at him on the beach while we were on holidays a couple of weeks ago & crunched his foot in his mouth  . It was a clean break, so it's just been splinted for the last 2 weeks, another 2 weeks or so & he can have it off they said. Hasn't slowed him down at all, still tries to run around like a mad thing  .

BC4Me - yep, 3 legs from 3 trials (Ekka, RSPCA & tonight) :bolt: . Congratulations on your Starters title too, you both did so well  - now you have to work on novice :) .
