I've questioned the partners about it and they feel that while some appreciate it, others see it as a 'routine' thing and it loses meaning (feedback from when our clinic used to!!) So now we have cards available if we feel particular close to clients and know that they would appreciate it then we send them a card with those vets and nurses that had a lot to do with their pet in its final years. It is also special to receive cards and gifts from clients when their pets have been through tough times, big surgeries, or after years and years at our vet. A very special card was from someone that was previously not a client but our clinic was open later, they brought their Dane in to be PTS and appreciated the care given. RallyValley Posted July 6, 2010 Share Posted July 6, 2010 when i had me wei pts i got a reminder for his vaccs about a month later have since changed vets. Same when my Jack was PTS after a traumatic accident. It was at his usual vet and they managed to give us a bill as we were carrying his body out the door but somehow forgot to put down that he was dead. THe cards are lovely and they write very personal things about the pet who has passed as we have had the same vets for 16 years now. kendall Posted July 7, 2010 Share Posted July 7, 2010 Part of my old job was doing the cards and pawprints for animals that had passed in hospital (ICU or the clinic). I was like silverblue and took great care in writing a message and also getting a really nice ink pawprint (or for the long term patients- a clay pawprint). When we had to have Diesel pts I later received a beautifully written card from the vet hospital. It made me cry all over again but it is special. I have been going there for years and have also worked with one of the vets who used to be there (his partner is there still - I'm pretty sure it was her who wrote the card, she's so lovely). I don't know if it is standard practise at this hospital - I didn't get a card when my cat died there a few years ago - but it is really nice to receive one. After having done so many cards and pawprints for other people at work it made me realise how much I would have liked a card/print for my cat. Not all pet owners care for them like you or me. Hence why it has become an optional thing and cards are only sent to those we know would appreciate it. When my last kerry blue was diagnosed with cancer, the North Geelong vet clinic paid for a pet photographer sitting for us. I didn't have a lot of photos of him and this was greatly appreciated. Fit for a King Posted July 7, 2010 Share Posted July 7, 2010 My vet referred me to a cancer specialist for one of mine - unfortunately she died from the treatment within a week. My vet sent two cards and a huge bunch of flowers and i was very touched. The specialist also sent a card which I tore up - I was disgusted with them - on the day she died I rang the specialist centre to tell them and the receptionist asked me "are you sure she's dead" - when I said through gritted teeth yes I'm sure I got an "oh well I suppose I should cancel your appointment for tomorrow then". The specialist called me later that day and spent 20 minutes, until I hung up on her, trying to convince me her treatment had nothing to do with my girl's death. Makes things easier on the day. And the staff are so kind the next time they see me - more tears all round - but it is lovely to know that they understand how much our pets mean to us, and they share in our loss. KnucklesDutchnUs Posted July 7, 2010 Share Posted July 7, 2010 We didn't receive a card (that I can remember) but our vet was very good to us when we gave Thorn his wings, OH called and made the appointment and they organised payment over the phone so we didn't have to think about it on the day. They let us sit with him as he lay on a nice fluffy blanket and stay with him until he was gone. And when I called a few weeks later to ask them to hold the ashes, as I just couldn't bare to pick them up yet, they assured me they would never throw them out and to take our time. In the end OH still had to pick up the ashes for me - he was my heart dog and I'd saved up and bought him when I was 14 and had him for 15 years! - Astred Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Tilly Posted July 7, 2010 Share Posted July 7, 2010 When we had our rottie pts I had rang my local vet in the morning explaining his time had come ... and they couldn't possible fit us in until about 6pm that night. I told them he couldn't wait that long and that I would find another vet. I then made another call to another vet and their response was to bring him in when ever I wanted. I made a tentative time. Just before heading to the vet I rang the funeral home and organised for them to collect him from home a good 2 hrs later so our other dog could have some time with him. The staff were absolutely loves and made it as painless as possible even helping me carry him in and out of the car. That night at about 6pm I get 2 phone calls - the first was from the other vet we went too just checking to see if I was doing ok ... the second was from our local vet asking me if I was turning up for my appointment!!!! A couple of days later I received a lovely hand written card from the other vet ... and a vaccination reminder from my local vet!!!! Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
