As the title says, what would there need to be at a dog fair that would make you want to leave your house on a cold winter day to check it out?

Have been to a few, and the things that catch my attention usually are 'free giveaways', certain events like agility/flyball demos that I want to see, and my favourite was a free photo booth (where you got your photo taken with your dog, then logged on to the website later to collect). For other people I know they liked celebrities (human or canine).

I've also been to coucil run dog events where they did free microchipping, but I'm not sure how successful that was (It was Leichhardt Council if you want to contact them and ask).

FLYBALL- I definitely leave the house for that because I am usually in them LOL!!

I think free microchipping (but it does bring people that I dont want my dogs around!!) but I think they should also encourage checking that the chips are still in place.

Vet students doing health checks.

A walk or some purpose.

Lots of stalls- particularly with the pet expo not being on here in sydney.

No corporate tent - nothing more confusing than paying to be part of a 'charity' event and see that there is a huge corporate tent with expensive catering and of all things a band. Yes a very loud band at a dog event ......

Free samples from the big food companies were good a few years back - they were a sponsor of the event I think and had an info stand with the free sample bags.

  • The Sebastian dog bowls.
  • A person who makes Doggy PJ's (one of our DOLers :o) and who would be happy to take the measurements on the spot and make to order, if there are no PJ's that would suit your dog at the time.
  • Someone who sells those dog toys I saw someone on DOL here had bought. One is a "Poo Toy" and the other is a "Wee Toy". Despite their names they are cute and I haven't been able to find where they are sold from.

Pedigree dogs and the clubs that represent them. People who own, breed and love those dogs there to talk about them.....unhurried, unstressed (as they often are at shows) with an agenda to promote their beautiful dogs to the public.

Rescue organisations with some of their success stories.

Retaillers with something more than the run of the mill stuff - like good collars :) , someone like Jollie treats etc - and for all dog sizes not just the SWF brigade.

I avoid the ones set up in a small space - you need to leave room for dogs to have some personal space. I also dislike stalls cramped together as it can be hard to browse, handle a dog and move around people (when you have a big dog).

On lead dogs rule - and it is enforced.

Demonstrations

Show bags!

They didnt have it last year :)

But normally at the expo I stock up on things in bulk because of the expo deals- treats, shampoo, urine off etc. So I guess getting some of the bigger retailers involved instead of the little ones I see at most council events.

Oh and SPACE- nothing worse than a dinky little park overcrowded with a billion dogs!!

People handing out free poo bags, and encouraging people to use them

Everyone loves a freebie!! (poo bags would be a really practical one that could be a good advertiser!)

Breed club representatives. (this would have been great when I was looking for a pup)

Training clubs representatives.

Dog sport demos.

Activities your dog can participate in (often there are the demos but it would be great if there were the simple first training steps available to do with your dog, obviously under guidance, so people can get hooked! Even if it were a limited number of spaces and you signed up on/before the day or something like that.)

Fun competitions for dogs.

Health checks.

Specialist health providers (eg massage, natropathy, osteo, eyes, ears, etc).

Kennels/dog daycare/walkers etc.

Law enforcement reps/parks reps.

Stalls with good quality collars, leashes, harnesses, coats, treats, toys - I can never walk away from one of these events without buying my girls a souvenier!!

Studio Sebastian

David now lives in Tasmania, I had a pleasant shock when I spotted him at Salamaca Markets in Hobart earlier this year.

He said he will be at the Royal in Sydney this year.

And here is his phone number -03 63546378
