The Right Clothes

My favourite suit is my pale green pant suit and jacket with clean white sensible shoes. I find I blend well into the grassy background if showing outdoors (so I am not too much of a distraction) and my black and tan dog stands out. Fine black plaited fabric all in one slip show leash, bit of make up, hair neatly tide back and that's it.

I too wear glasses, but still wear eye makeup. If it is really hot and a country show, I will skip the foundation, but just wear the eye makeup and lippy.

I would prefer to wear my prescription sunglasses as I am quite light sensitive, but just prior to going in the ring I swap sunnies for specs as a sign of respect for the judge.

I keep bling to a bear minimum, but usually have my nail color complimenting my dog and outfit.

Dyzney, interesting you mentioned sunnies. If it is a day show would judges really get offended if you wear sunnies?

Health recommendations state you should wear sunglasses when outdoors. I know that the pterygium I have in my eye plays up if it gets too much sum (and was probably caused by sun in the first place) and it is very painful when it has flared up! So I prefer to wear sunnies when I can :)

I've forgot to take mine off at times, my hubby can not not wear his his eyes are sun damaged if he does take them off he suffers from migraines i can't recall the only time he has been in the ring if he took them off or not, but he will wear them. Sorry if a judge objects but he isn't going to go blind because someone can't look past a pair of sunglasses to the dogs

I am extremely light sensitive and have dry eye as well. Any judge who feels disrespected and penalises my dog because I have on a hat and sunglasses can go. <insert appropriate whatever>. In Australia the health recommendation is sunglasses and hats when outdoors and i will not endanger my health for points!

Melonoma anyone?

I see no issue with wearing sunnies but i would say there are sunnies & then there are sunnies.

I have worn them ,its rare but sometimes its simply the best option & never had a judge issue many judges wear sunnies but the ones i wear aren't a fashion statement they just blend in nicely & look like there there as a sunglass purpose .

I do wear hats and sunglasses in the ring during outdoors show.

I'vegot sunburnt badly twice after two show (both times was when my dogs have won classes in group) and my face was red and eventually had blisters :(

I don't show in the sun without a hat sunglasses, and I use sun cream

If the judges don't like it, too bad!! I've lost my grandfather a few years ago and he had cancer on his nose, because he spent all his time outdoors gardening, and he wore hats and sun cream and it didn't prevent the cancer. I just rather be safe than sorry in the long run. :)

Hi,

This was a piece of advice given to me 30 years ago........regardless of the show ie venue or size.......always present your dog and yourself as if you are at a Royal (ie clean, neat, siutable colour etc and as best you can within your budget)........this is not for the benefit of the judge you are showing to.......but for the others looking on at ringside who have more time to take in the complete picture and for photographs that my be taken by friends and onlookers......the only exemption was pouring rain.......then gum boot up and wet weather gear

I show two ACD's and have been wearing dress moleskins, polished RM Williams boots, polished brass belt buckle, long sleeved shirt and an Akubra hat. I have had so many people stop me and say it looks great. I use the finest plaited leather lead with a brass snake chain. I don't strategically blend into the background but I think it looks harmonious with the cattle dogs. Only problem is I was wearing a pink shirt with my female and now I have a male as well so maybe wearing pink isn't an option anymore.

I'm trying to decide if I keep that look but add a navy jacket for Sydney Royal, or go for a skirt suit. Next problem is I am handling both a blue cattle dog and a red one so what colour......

As for sunglasses I have worn them on glarey days, but just small metal Ray Bans.

What about hair? Many women don't tie their long hair back and I think that's a distraction. Mine is half way down my back and looks great with soft curls, but to me it would be a hindrance, unless of course you never bent over!

Hi,

I wouldn't worry about the pink blouse behind your boy......so long as the colour looks nice.........have thought about a nice RMW skirt for Sydney Royal and a pair of tassel loafers for shoes......my only reason for saying this is I once had an oversea judge stay with me after our breed show, this was 20 years ago, she was highly insulted that none of the women handlers dressed up ie wore a skirt.....though at the time everyone was 'dressed up' in nice tailored trouser suits........but this was not what the judge was use to seeing, and thought we were all too casual.......I started wearing skirt suits from then on, especially for American judges....LOL

Hair.....long hair not pinned back can look a bit messy....but depends on the hair....some hair stays in place while some hair takes a life of it own during a run around the ring......once again think of the compete picture.

Short skirt.....loved the "hows your boys" comment someone made with regard to bending over.......and have had my 'photo taken' several times from outside the ring by short skirted exhibitors bending over, g strings are not good in this case....have experienced that as well...LOL......short skirts also pose promblems when crouching or kneeling behind your dog if you dont keep your knees together....a Sharon Stone Fatal Attraction moment.....LOL

I always put my hair in at least a ponytail... i can't imagine showing and running around - my hair is quite long and gets in the way at the best of times!

mine is bum length and i always have it in a bun or it would definately be in the way in the ring  could give my rottis a tail :p

I hear your pain mirawee. I have pterygiums in both eyes, dry eye (I have punctum plugs) and light sensitive to the point where I get migraines if I am out doors without sunnies on and am short sighted to boot. I have been advised to always wear my sunglasses when outdoors by my specialist. I guess I have really crappy eyes

Anyway, yes I agree, one should not have to worry about wearing sunnies in the ring, particularly prescription ones such as mine, but I just can't help but worry that that the chances of my dog being put up might be dimished by wearing them. I am concerned that the judge will think I am being rude. That's just me.

I did forget to swap them once and didn't even realise until I was going in for group :D

  • 2 weeks later...

I was told years ago by a professional handler to always suit up, if your a lady have hair, makeup done and wear a skirt suit, the once I have shown in pants wad when at Wodonga there was three inches of mud.

Sadly for many of us wearing a skirt is not a good look at all. I wear pants, and always will do because, to wear a skirt suit is not a good look for me! I get the American Judges think we are disrespectful by not wearing a "skirt" but seriously, in this day and age you think they would get past the skirt thing.

I'm with you Stoltz ! I have virtually never worn a dress or skirt in my life and only own pants.

I can't imagine the discomfort and weirdness of wearing a skirt in the ring, and if it meant win or lose to a judge - then wow :( . Most professions now allow dress pants on a woman, I hope that dog judges from the US are modernising !!

A nice pantsuit or pants / shirt /jacket is just as dressy.

A judge that is bothered about what the exhibitor is wearing, isn't worth bothering about - they are there to judge the dogs not what you are wearing. When I judge I am looking only at the dog, only once the places have been made to I look up to see what is on the other end of the lead!

I wore pants and a jacket for years and I don't think it ever went against me or my dog. Always wore white pants, top and runners then a colourful jacket over the top. I wore the long sleeved jacket regardless of the weather.
