If your dog has allergies, it may be worth seeing Dr. Linda Vogelnest (dermatologist) at Sydney or Camden Uni.

I will ask for a referal next time I go to my vet and will take him after the diet is concluded.

Can you mix the fish with brown rice and veggies? I cook up turkey mince with rice and veggies regularly and my dogs can't get enough of it. You could also use or add potatoes and some oats?I know he's young but is there any chance he has a sore mouth?

He will eat cooked foods so I could try. He can't do rice though, it sets him off badly.

Also, has he always been like this since he was born? Have you moved house? Have you contacted the original breeder just to see if they have heard of any of their other puppies having a similar problem?

I used to live in the US but moved back here a year ago. So originally he was born and raised there for 2 years. So he's been in Aust for about a year now, seemed to of developed in the past 6 or so months. It could be environmental but I'm trying to rule out food first. I did try and send the breeder an email but it just came back, I'm guessing she may of changed it. I'm still trying to find a way to contact her.

Beef is one of the worst food for allergies. What exactly where you feeding before ??Do you have any plants that could be a issue??Was he a fussy eater before the diet change ??Has his tonsils been checked

I fed him everything really...he loves cooked food. He's had raw/canned/cooked for the most part. I really wanted him to stay on the raw but he only managed to eat it for a month or so before he stopped (apparently the company changed formula) then every brand I tried after he wouldn't eat. I've tried all dry kibble in the past and no go. He's never had anything with by-products etc in it, I've always given him the premium food.

There is some plants outside of where I live, I could possibly walk him out towards the driving path and we could avoid them. I will start that tommorrow and try keep him away from plants the next few days.

Yes he's always been fussy but I don't remember him to go so long without eating.

PM me for info about a true elimination diet and how to go about it...been there with my highly allergic (skin, stomach, eyes) stafford mix.

Thank you so much! Will do so.

Edited: forgot to answer some questions!

We certainly can't fix every dog, and your poor boy sounds like his immune system is very hyper sensitive, however we do have a 70% success rate.

You can buy what you need from Petbarn (and if your local store is missing something then they can order it in quickly - or PM us and we can help out)

Premium Choice (about to be renamed Raw76) Allerblend - found in the fridge (Kangaroo based - a novel protein for him)

Omega Blend

Skin & Coat Formula.

You have to stick with it for a minimum of 6 weeks, very important. If he is fussy and adding a few oily saltwater fish helps him eat then you can do this, but really try to wean him off the fish asap. He wont starve! this diet is great for IBS dogs too.

After a few weeks he will seem to relapse, don't stress his liver will just be detoxing. It can last for about a week.

After the 6 weeks you can then wean him off the Skin & Coat Formula, then off the Omega Blend. Ideally he should then remain on the Allerblend as his diet.

I would imagine that any kind of dry food or tinned food that you buy that's made for animal consumption is going to have some kind of extra ingredients in there to hold it all together, make it last (and probably, keep it cheap to make). Obviously if it was just fish with no additives or fillers, it would not keep too well in the bag on the shelf!

If your vet is in agreeance and you are willing, maybe feeding actual fish might be the way to go until you have figured out what is triggering the allergies. Long term there may not be all the nutrients in there that he needs, but in the short term at least he might eat it and get some calories in him while you figure out what he can and can't tolerate. He must be losing condition fast if he isn't eating the special diet kibble.

OK.. he has a bad reaction to many foods..and is refusing to eat ...

I suggest you go to a UNI clinic, or someone who will do all the bloods etc necessary to determine if it is an allergic response, or something else in his metabolism . IMO ,No good fiddling with diets if he won't eat, and can't eat so many things:( ..and he'snot getting any better without his AB's /anti itch meds.

Poor little guy.

I would also be checking as to what insecticide treatment your new house has had, and other things like that ....

I am desperate for some advice in regards to my Cavalier who is a very fussy eater. Recently he's been put on single protein source diet of fish(dry kibble) and I can' get him to eat it! I put in tuna and he'll lick off a few pieces and leave it as it is - only twice he finished a bowl, I had to soak the kibble and then add a fair amount of tuna to it and he ate it then. So we go for 4-5 days without eating until he is starving and have a bowl, then wont eat again for another 4-5 days.....

He is on Taste of the Wild at the moment and it isn't just the brand, he wont eat any dry food at all, yes I've tried many :(

Two weeks have gone by and he's had a total of maybe 3 small bowls of food. Looking at him today he seems to have lost a little weight but nothing major. He needs to be on this diet for another 4 weeks but at this rate it is hard to know if he is allergic to the product since he eats such a small amount I can't tell. Thought I would try and get some advice here before taking him back to the vet (especially when it comes to food).

If he has only eaten 3 small bowls in two weeks he needs veterinary attention. Again, if he won't eat kibble he may simply not like it and I would be trying a fish based wet food. He sounds like he is in a very poor state.

 poor little fellow...have you weighed him ? does he look thin ? Has the vet checked his teeth - Cavs do tend to be prone to teeth problems. If this all started 6 months after moving to the new home I would not think it is environmental unless new plants - paving - rugs or like have been added.

I feel for you in this situation as you do sound like you are trying everything to help him. :(

I would be getting full bloods done on him.

I had a itchy dog that was super fussy. I tried every brand of expensive dog food, raw etc etc. Turns out she has a liver condition and the high protein foods were making her sicker. Now is is on a food that suits her she scoffs her food down.

On the advice of some I gave him plain tinned sardines mixed with tuna last night and he ate it all! In the meantime, I am going to buy some fresh fish and try giving him that with one carb and see how he goes. If he doesn't eat that either I'll take him to the vet and book him for a dermatologist? Can vets do allergy tests or does it need to be done by a dermatologist?

He isn't terribly skinny, just lost a bit of weight it seems but he's still hopping around and happy!

On note of his teeth, when I took him to the vet on his arrival here from the States a year ago he remarked how great his teeth looked, sparkly white and all clean. Last time I took him 2 weeks ago he has 2 decaying teeth, I asked if he needed a dental and the vet told me it wasn't bad enough for one and just to keep an eye on it. So that is the state of his teeth at the moment.

If it was my dog I would stop visiting local vets and demand a referral to a specialist and get some serious allergy testing done. I spent $2k 23 years ago pissing around with local vets and allergy tests on an Akita, turned out he was allergic to additives in dry feed.

I would also take the route of adding enzymes and canine probiotics to a diet of home prepared raw which included a small amount of blended vegetables, or they can be frozen in ice blocks & given that way if he doesn't like it mixed with meat.

Did I read somewhere he had rotting teeth & the vet was complacent re that issue??? Then that surely to god is going to have a hell of a lot to do with him refusing to eat kibble!!!

See a dermatologist - that's all I have to say

How about you try 'teaching your dog to eat', with these instructions from Sue Ailsby:http://sue-eh.ca/page24/page39/

Actually this is what I was trying to do but it isn't working. He still goes 4-5 days between feeds so how much longer should I hold out for?

He is doing suprisingly well so far, no rashes right now and itching is minimal. I'm also trying to keep him away from plants and the like for walks. He is eating the canned/cooked fish but he wont touch the raw.

I'm planning on taking him to Dr Linda Vogelnest (Dermatologist) next time I take him to the vet and get a referal.

Thanks for all the advice, much appreciated :)

If I had a dog that was going 5 days without eating regularly like you say yours is I would make a vet appointment for tomorrow and get off to the specialist and I am not a person who hops off to the vet everytime a dog vomits.

He only went 5 days without eating because he didn't want the dry food. If I give him something he wants he will eat it. Basically he holds out until I give him something he wants but has never done so for 5 days before. Since I've been giving him plain fish he's been eating. I'm experimenting with different fish - he seems to love tuna and salmon, but turns his nose up at mackerel and sardines

If he is an only dog, is there a possibility you could have a friends dog come over at dinner time, or borrow for a few days? Nothing stimulates appetite like competition!
