Also I would think that 1% salt is a little excessive. That is equivilent to 1 teaspoon of salt for every 99 teaspoons of other ingredients, but I may be misreading it. Also, can't see from the photo, but is it preservative, artificial colours & GMO free ???? I was about to say that. How can you advertise 50% in big letters, but then say 24% (minimum) in the fine print? That's an awful lot of protein to lose in a few lines. Stitch Posted May 20, 2013 Author Share Posted May 20, 2013 All dogfood IMO is a bit of a mystery. So much could be hidden (in plain sight) in the ingredients. I am no chemist but looking at the Earthborn Holistic Primitive Nature I am left scratching my head about all the ingredients they list and EHPN is considered to be a very good dry dogfood. I do know that ALL dry dogfood has to be preserved with something either a chemical or salt and Applaws obviously uses salt....but I think it is a vast improvement on some of the dogfoods that are available. I remember back when there was a scare about what chemical Eukanuba used to preserve their product. Regarding the % of starch in Applaws, the starch % is missing from EHPN as it just lists potatoes as its 3rd ingredient so that sounds like it would be a decent % of starch to me...but we will never know as they don't give % on their packet, just individual ingredients and that can be very difficult to compare with the Australian products but they do list protein as 38% and fat as 20% which are quite high IMO and also in the opinion of some specialist vets. However unless we have a standardised way to present these ingredients/data it makes it almost impossible to compare products. But all things considered I am pleased to see that Australia now has 2 Australian made dry dogfoods that are cereal free...and the only way you are going to be able to tell if it suits your dog is to try it. As we know one product does not suit every dog so I am prepared to give it a trial and see the results. So far I am seeing no difference between it and the more expensive imported brands. I would also be wanting to know where the ingredients come from in both the dry & the canned. We recently ran a trial of grain-free 'Stay Loyal' which is a new Australian made kibble for some owners who used Blackhawk, they were happy with it, bigger kibble size too which is ideal for bigger dogs. http://www.stayloyal.com.au/ and it has higher quality ingredients than BH imo (not taking anything away from BH though). $97 per 15 kilos with free delivery in some cases. It's all about the ingredients, to me there's no point in feeding this new Coles product with that level of starch in it, all it does is act as a binding agent, it does nothing positive for the dog. I think once we know better we do better. Sadly products like this new Coles lines make people think the ingredients are better than they are and give the impression of being more affordable...which they are not compared to better quality kibbles available. I feed the chicken version in the can to her and she was sick. Thought it could have been her irritable bowel but tonight I fed it to my boy (who has an iron gut) and he has thrown dinner up twice. Through trialling many different premium dry dogfoods over the years I have found my lot can't cope with a lot of rich or fatty/greasy food. I am still using Applaws because they tolerate it very well as a maintenance food which I feed them for breakfast. I also feed BARF of an evening. This works for me & mine.
