Searching For A Foster Carer In Sydney! :(

Hi all, it's been a long time since I have logged on again on dol forums.

After so much research into breeders etc, early this year I was finally able to get my first black and white english cocker pup who I named "Yoness" and we love her to bits. I cant thank this forum enough for the wealth of information it provides. It has educated me so much in so many ways.

My puppy is A very happy merry, typical lovely cocker pup. So much energy perhaps because she is a puppy. She is very outgoing and loves EVERYONE.

She is currently 10months old, very healthy and happy and spoilt with so much love from my family and I and we love her to bits.

Unfortunately our family is going through a financially difficult time right now which we didnt depict our self in.

We wouldve never purchased a puppy in the first place if we knew we were going to be financially difficult. It takes a lot of responsibility owning a dog and our family didnt take it lightly and still dont. It is a full time job just like being a parent and being financially stable is also one of the priorities we all knew was part of being a responsible pet owner.

The financial state we are faced with right now was really sudden and unexpected and the conclusion is we are selling our house and moving into an apartment on rent and dear Yoness cannot come with us. We looked everywhere for apartments which will allow pets but was rejected and had to draw this final conclusion. We are having to move out fast within a month so I am trying to find a foster home for my dear beloved puppy for around 6months-1year until we find a place that allows pets. Right now we are rushed in to moving out and time is short so we cannot do much. I refuse to send her to a pound (never in a million years) and dont have any close friends or families who can take another dog in atm. I'm hoping someone on this forum can refer to their friends or family and possibly be of help.

Ideally, I would love to visit my dog often but if the foster carer is not happy with that idea then I am happy to obide and make the visits less frequent. Perhaps once a month...

Also to add, I am located in Sydney, NSW and would like to meet and get to know the potential foster carer of my puppy and introduce my puppy to them before anything.

Please feel free to PM me if you would like more specific details of my puppy, or of anything. Im happy to answer any questions and be as detailed as possible.

Please please please pass this message across to anyone you know if they may be of help. Thankyou so much...

Can you contact her breeder and ask if they can take her back for the time being? Or they may know of someone? You'd probably have to pay a small boarding fee though, or at least offer to.

Hi Cassie,

The first thing I did was contact her breeder and she said she will charge boarding fee, weekly, which right now I really cannot afford. For a few weeks is okay but for 6-12months it becomes very expensive. The other option I was given from her breeder was for her breeder to take her back then find her another home. But not temporary foster carecrying.gif

I sympathise with your situation, I really truly do. But I think it's a little bit "cheeky" for want of a better word to expect your girl to be looked after free of charge for a year, then you get her back. I really hope you can find something that'll work for you both though, good luck.

Most ppl who would foster here would exoect you to pay something towards her upkeep. You can't exoect someone to mind your dog that long for free. I presume you would pay fir all food and vet costs while she us being cared for?

If you can't afford to pay a fee why not offer some thing else? Free home maintenance- lawn mowing/ ironing or free babysitting. It's unfair and not realistic to exoect a stranger to care fir your dog fir that long free of charge.

I agree with cassie, your pup is at the stage where she needs to do some serious training & be mentally stimulated - this requires a lot of time & effort. If you return her to her breeder, she will bond very quickly to a new owner, & you will have no pressure to get your life straightened out within a time limit.

Who knows what will happen economically with this new government? You may not be in a position to take her back in 12 months...... then what?

EFS!

Maybe you are right... I didnt think of it from the other person's perspective... Sorry I was not imposing to be "cheeky" whatsoever.

Yes, I am willing to pay for all the vet bills and food costs and maintenance costs.

I feel I have posted this post very hastily without over thinking the potential carer's perspective.

By the way it's not foster care you are seeking, it's free long term boarding.

Sorry if my choice of words has offended you or mislead you in any way. That was not my intention...

12months would be the absolute maximum but I am looking more towards 6months time frame. or it could be even less.

You are right in the sense that you never know what will happen. And really, I want to try the best I can to make things work for the pup and I.

all I want to do is try to find an apartment which allows pets which at this stage I havent found... Im hoping if I keep searching something will come up.

Even a granny flat or something where me and my family and the dog can live in.

You mentioned the dog will bond very quickly to a new owner, which I agree with... So do you think being in the situation I am in, it would be better for the puppy to find a new home???

It would be very hard on you but for the dogs sake I would send her back to her breeder and let them rehome the dog. It's sad your situation has changed so much but I feel it's unfair to the dog to chop and change around. You don't know where you will be in 12 months time, things might not have improved, what then? I think you should think of the dog first.

I agree with taking her back to the breeder to be rehomed. A year is a long time in dog years and by the time you can take her back, she would have bonded considerably with the foster carer and taking her back will disrupt her life as she would need to form another bond with you.

And having the time limit of a year is not 100% guaranteed and you shouldnt have to worry about a dog with everything else that is going on in your life by the sounds of it.

It sounds like its best for all if the pup is rehomed IMHO.

Thanks for your advice Rebanne. I do want what's best for the dog so if that's the case I will have to consider rehoming her permanently...

I am just so emotionally attached to her so cannot yet imagine of separating with her forever.

What area are you looking for an apartment? There are bucketloads that are pet friendly these days, you just have to know where to look and not always go by the "pet friendly" status on domain/website ads, but actually approach real estate agents directly.

Can you not leave it with family?

I mentioned in my post that unfortunately I dont have any friends and family who can take care of her. My family and I live together so we are all stuck in the same sticky situation...

I am looking for an apartment in the inner west Sydney. I have called and asked most of the large real estate agents and they have told me that nothing pet friendly is available for rent. It is only permitted if you own the apartment... They told me that the law was changing to allow pets "soon" but cannot confirm a date... so it could be one year or two years down the track.

As a foster carer I completely agree. But I wish you luck in finding a solution.

As sad as it is for you and your family, maybe as Rebanne suggested you might have to consider rehoming the pup permanently.

Just saw you agree with Rebanne..

It an apartment it depends on the strata, and then the owner. But I guess mostly it depends on your priorities if you want to keep the dog and look in other areas that might not be your first choice, or other property types (ie: not apartments) that would allow you to keep her or not.

But I know plenty of people with pets in apartments. I used to have my dog in a rented apartment.

Thanks for letting me know your perspective. Its nice to know how you feel about the situation as a foster carer.

If I cannot find a pet friendly apartment to rent in the next few weeks I think rehoming the pup permanently may be the best option for the pup's sake.
