Benny Update And Photos Of The Others As Well

So, it's now been just over 3 months since Benny came home. He's a delightful dog. Has managed to wangle his way onto our bed 2 of the past 4 nights and prefers to sleep in between us with his head under our pillows or his nose in an armpit. He eats well, sleeps well, is walking well and keeping up with the others. The corn comes and goes, as corns do, but doesn't worry him unduly. He's a little bit stiff in the cold, but runs and dances and jumps with the others, just a little slower. I've got him on Zeel tablets and fish oil which also help, and chicken feet are regulars to help with some glucosamine. He also loves playing with Hermon, although Hermon is less keen.

A side on shot. He's looking a bit ribby here, but I'm keeping some weight off to preserve his joints. He's also a bit tucked up/ leaning off his front feet/ putting the weight to the back of his feet. I think this is related to his nails. They are getting better, but the quicks are still so long that getting and keeping them short is a challenge. I also think that his nails were long for a long time, so this is how he has learnt to stand. I'm not sure how to overcome it. As I said above, he moves OK and doesn't seem to be in pain, but it looks uncomfortable. Any suggestions welcome.

Ignore the long grass. He just looks nice and chilled in this one.

And the others, so they don't feel left out!

I think Hermon looks particularly 'come hither' in this one.

Finally a photo of Paige where you can actually see her face. Most of the time she's charging straight at me to get as close as possible to the camera or timing her head turn so that its all dark.

Brandi. Little stinker. After digging a nice big hole in the garden.

We often see Brandi standing like this. Someday I'll get the photo in the right light so muscle can actually be seen!

Thanks for looking.

Three whole months! He now has his own hook in the laundry (the blue IKEA dogs bottom and tail one!) for all his stuff, he's the only one Hermon lets near DH when he first gets home - even the girls have to wait. Benny just barges in. I think he's a little hard of hearing but he really loves life.

Aw! What's not to love about live ChezBrandiandwe?

Corns or no corns, Benny fell well & truly on the dear pads of his feet.

I'm going to get a dremel I think. Hopefully it will work better for Brandi as well, who is a complete diva when it comes to her nails. We suspect she was less socialised and handled than the others, and she's certainly more nervy as a dog, so touching her feet and doing her nails is always an ideal despite years now of handling and consistency. It really just goes to show how important those first few months are!

But what else can I do for Benny's nails? Or do I just manage as best I can?

What we did with Gabor, was get his nails done several times under sedation by the Vet.

That served to shorten the time they took to grow. Then in between visits, spent plenty of time handling his paws/nails without always cutting them.

Dremels are good. But can surprise some dogs the first time they hear that motor.

My experience is for Vizslas. Greyhounds might differ.

Brandi is gorgeous  and Benny has such a kind and soulful face, he must feel so lucky to be seeing his twilight years out with you :) Makes me really wish a greyhound would suit what I want in a dog, they are so lovely!

I still don't really have a foolproof method of trimming Didi's nails... I kind of just wait till she's passed out asleep and do a sneaky trim, she wakes up but is usually too half asleep to make a fuss!

hankdog, you haven't seen me out on the morning walk. Generally I'm lucky to have my clothes on front to back. I don't guarantee anything about them being outside out. Nor have you seen mine roaching. Or farting and burping. Elegance is not the word.

Right. I'm thinking a dermal is in my future. Thank you all for the suggestions. Rebanne, I particularly enjoyed the Bunnings link. DH is especially happy about dog shopping there.

As for him being lucky, we are the lucky ones. Adopting a senior has been a very special and wonderful experience.
