Wednesday, 10 September 2014 06:27:48 PM

A man has been charged following an alleged act of animal cruelty in Sydney’s inner west today.

About 11am (Wednesday 10 September 2014), police from Leichhardt Local Area Command were alerted to a possible incident of animal cruelty on Mansfield Street, Rozelle.

Officers were told a 34-year-old man allegedly threw a Whippet dog down a manhole before throwing insecticide bombs into the hole and closing the lid.

Police, RSPCA and Fire & Rescue NSW officers found the 12-year-old dog in a manhole in the rear yard of a home on Mansfield Street.

The man was arrested at the scene and taken to Newtown Police Station, where he was charged with committing an act of cruelty upon an animal.

He was granted conditional bail to appear at Balmain Local Court on Wednesday 1 October 2014.

The dog was taken to a local vet for treatment.

It is now in the care of the RSPCA.

Police have been told the dog did not sustain permanent injuries.
