  1. I don't get given much grief about the dog sports but the amount of silly comments I got over horse showing!
  2. Are you assuming all the BC owners in this thread have only trained BCs? I was an instructor for 5 years so have trained quite a lot of dogs, well the dog's owners. Fairly sure this BC owner did say right back on page one that they would use a e-collar in the manner that the OP suggested using it.
  3. We have all had a good debate about this, me included. But I was just driving home and watched an elderly lady, tenderly tuck a toddler into a pram and felt sick. I assume she was his Granny. I can not even imagine how the Grandmother and Mother is feeling right now. It just doesn't seem right to turn this tragedy into something for us to debate.
  4. What a strange thing to say. What are you assuming here? You don't even know how I train my dogs or what they do.
  5. Firstly, I don’t refer to myself a ‘balanced’ trainer. Secondly, I don’t see where the lack of respect is from myself or other people in favour of the tool? It is only the people who have posted against e-collars that have become emotive in their arguments accusing anyone who is using them as abusive, inhumane etc. I think the posters in support of e-collars as a tool have responded really well considering they are being accused of mistreating dogs and not being educated enough as trainers etc. This is and always has been a heated topic. I wasn't aware that you were actually a trainer.
  6. You do realise that people who train feral cat detection dogs do actually use +R to teach this? This is not one of the problems with +R that -R seeks to solve and I would suggest that anyone who chooses to use an e-collar simply because the dog is excited and out of sight should not be training detection dogs. Sensible post as always :)
  7. I would agree that food was probably the trigger. Not the first time either, it was thought that a meat pie caused the attack on the young girl in the UK earlier this year.
  8. Really? Sorry but the so called balanced trainers on this board are just as hard to talk to. Total lack of respect on all sides IMO. And the poor +R people have been pretty much hounded off from putting their viewpoint across. The people I respect the most on here never say anything about training anymore because of this.
  9. You are trying to stop the dog going near the snake.
  10. Well the dog isn't going to find it a pleasant experience but a bit of a zap is probably better than being bitten by a snake. Pretty much the only time I would use a e-collar is if the dog was doing something that was likely to get it hurt or killed. Having been an obedience instructor for years I am comfortable with them being restricted the way they are. People can be scarily stupid.
  11. The thread isn't about doing a drop on recall though. So any advice I have given isn't about teaching that.
  12. True Staffyluv. Anyone that caught Amber would have hysterics over her weight as she is pretty thin because of her condition.
  13. I have some 'unofficial' offlead areas near me. I was a bit scandalized when I first moved in. But pretty much everyone puts their dogs back on lead if another person appears. Everyone tends to put their dogs back on lead to pass in the official offlead park too. So polite! I love it. Only have some issues on public hols and nice weekend days when the non-regular walkers come out. All the regular people are great. Dogs in front yards is still my biggest annoyance. I snapped a finger nail the other day, damn it! I have returned some dogs back to their house twice now after they escaped. The female does not have a great temperament (owner admitted that!). The female was missing for a while. Last time I walked past it is obvious that she is feeding pups The male wasn't desexed and obviously she wasn't either. They are large, bull/mastiff/??? crosses. Both dogs are currently showing even more aggression if you walk past. The gate is still quite dodgy. I would like to report them just for being idiots. Am quite concerned about the puppies, hope they get the male's temperament, although he is now quite feral. He was ok when he first moved in.
  14. Yes well running is probably not really accurate. Walking around sniffing stuff would be what mine are normally doing! I don't bother with chucking food around as unless it is chucked right under their noses they never seem to find it!! Got to find what works for you!
  15. I know that Buddy was discussed at a Hydrodog groomers seminar. A friend has a franchise and I had told her about Buddy.
  16. I don't do it during a recall or running between equipment. Usually whilst they are running around the garden or park. But this training has given me a perfect drop on recall :)
  17. Not a bad idea. I might introduce a "stop" command. Using wait or stay while she is running might dissolve those commands which she already knows as certain behaviours. Though with the young guy, when he is approaching the table in Agility, we have to give the stay command before he hits the table, otherwise he flies over the top. I haven't found that. I do tend to use wait though. That is how I taught the stop. Wait-stop for a while and then just stop.
  18. A good groomer will not leave a dog on the table ever. Even if you are a few meters away the dog could still fall off and snap its neck. I would cancel.
  19. If the dog did go over a fence that high I don't think the owners should be fined or jailed. As you say most people would think that size fence was well adequate and I can't see how the owners were at fault. Unless the dog has a history of jumping out of course.
  20. I stop them first and then ask for the drop so they get used to dropping at a distance. So a wait or stay command (if they don't have a stop), followed by the drop command. Not a great distance at first. A stop is a brilliant command to have on your dog.
  21. It really isnt designed to be bitten on, definitely wouldn't leave the dogs alone with it. Thanks for highlighting this. A dog being too enthusiastic I guess. Mine are a bit like 'do we just lick?, are you sure?' and try and have a nibble.
  22. I got one in a free sample bag. The dogs do like it. Think I heard something about a dog swallowing the ball thing so some caution is needed!
  23. Poppy is good to yell :) pop-pop-pop-poppyyyyyyyyyyyyyy :D
  24. If your dog was onlead then you weren't at fault at all. Hard to keep your onlead dog away from an offlead one. If you dog is likely to chomp (badly) any dog that approaches then that is a different matter and needs different management for the protection of your dog and others. Sounds like your boy is just friendly though. Chi's are one breed that I don't go anywhere near though! They scare the shit out of me!
