Training Talk Thread
spoilt lab lives here replied to Tiggy's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Good to see you here and we want to hear how your training goes over the next few weeks - maybe we need a Sunday check in session to tell us about the week Thanks guys! Ive been training each afternoon and yesterday there was kids soccer training happenign while we trained. A few things I need to work on are his right turns, he goes wide and his automatic sits. I have been a steward at 4 trials but now as a competitor cant for the life of me remember if you can give them the command for turns. I know you can for sit, drop, stand etc etc but with left and right are you meant to just turn and the dog follow or can you say the command? Also need to brush up on figure of 8..Need some posts to work with first -
Where do you get these from? I was told you can download some online that are accepted but I cant find them.

Training Talk Thread

I am finally entering a trial with Rams! I joined dogs NSW yesterday and am going to register Ramses when my number comes through. Our first trial will either be the end of May or mid-July. Rams is now 5 and about 12-18 months ago he was just about ready to enter the ring but I just never took that step. So now we have about a few months to get him back up to speed and ready to go! I started training yesterday and although he is a little bit rusty Im confident he will get there! The biggest problem yesterday was not the kids kicking the ball or the people walking their dogs around us it was the smells on the ground! -

What Do People Think
spoilt lab lives here replied to Dogsrawesome's topic in General Dog Discussion
I have one for my dogs. He wears it when we go to the beach of a day out to the park. I put his ball and poo bags in it and any other dog stuff that I cant carry at the time. Heavy stuff like water goes in my bag. Although once I had to return some dvds so put his bag on 2 dvds in each side and away we went. I thought I was clever haha. -
Smoking Around Dogs & Other Pets
spoilt lab lives here replied to Baileys mum's topic in General Dog Discussion
No one in my house smoke and if friends or visitors want a smoke they have to go out the front. I dont let them smoke out the back unless its a party then the dogs are locked up and the guests can smoke. I hate smoking its fowl! -

I worked with a guy at the boarding kennels who said -Pap-illi-yon- He pronounced the L's and the I's in it. When I heard him say I had to ask him to repeat it 3 times before I could work out what he was trying to say! -

How Many Of Your Dogs Do You Walk At Once?

I only confidently walk 2 at a time. Anymore than that and I find I dont enjoy the walk myself. -
Plastic/timber Dog Kennels
spoilt lab lives here replied to Sam the man's topic in General Dog Discussion
Ramses hated the plastic one. Never ever used it. I bought him a big giant, fibro and colourbond beast off ebay for $26 and he loves it!! Its big enough for all 3 dogs. He also loves the beagle sized colourbond kennel and often squeezes himself in there. -
Dogs, And Rental Properties.
spoilt lab lives here replied to snow_wolf's topic in General Dog Discussion
As a landlord, these are two very relevant points. 1) We are worried about the condition of our property. Many of us have left management to a property manager. In my case, I don't necessarily feel ok about letting the property manager decide whether or not a particular pet owner / pet is a good risk. So I've got a blanket "no pets" policy. Also, our property has carpet, which I think means no pets in a rental property too. And the property manager simply has to do what I say. I'm not interested in meeting tenants. The property is 1000's of km from where I live, so it is impractical too. I prefer the distant professional relationship with tenants. Owning a rental property is after all, a business. And it is a business which we have put in ALOT of hardwork to be able to achieve. We, like many rental property owners, are not independently wealthy people, just very hardworking ordinary people who invested young and worked like mad to build something for our kids. We only have one rental property, so it is a large chunk of our personal assets ( our largest single asset). There may also be insurance issues with pets - Ive never looked into it. Landlords hold insurance against the damage tenants may cause and the loss of income when they don't pay rent or skip out on a lease. It would possibly be dearer if you allowed pets. And additional claims drive your premium price up too. My point is, if you can mitigate these fears, and show a real respect for how valuable the asset is to the owner, then you may be off to a good start. And, our property manager has a scheme where tenants with a good rental history get cheaper rent. We always go for these tenants. The reassurance that the property will be cared for, and that the tenant will pay their rent is worth alot more than bagging the greatest amount of rent per week. So, good rental history pays dividends to tenants, on a number of levels. Incidentally, to keep our very good tenant happy we allow them to choose an improvement to be made to the property every year. Can you be my landlord!! I have a list of things that need attending to. Starting with the venetians in all the bedrooms, hideous, faling apart and unuseable! My last inspection the R/E walked in and said 'gee you keep this place beautifully clean, I have no need to worry about you' made me feel awesome ! Hope you find a place soon. Getting a rental is hard but very do-able! -
My vet and my bank are on either side of my work. If something did happen and for some reason I didnt have the funds upfront I would see my bank manager and see if I could get the money that way or as an absolute last resort ask my boss if I could put it on the business CC and it back at a later date. My vet knows me well, we do their debt collection at work so Im fairly sure Id be ok but to have backup plans is always a good idea.

In the kennel I worked at we had plenty of oldies. 13+! They were just given extra love and were treated gently. One boy was 16 (he would be 17 now) and would run around the play yard like a puppy barking mad if you didnt make him sit down for cuddles ETA- I found that once the owners were gone the dogs settled in really well. There was the odd scaredy cat who once again just got some extra attention to help them settle in and after a day or 2 was all ok.

Rams is a chronic licker! It comes in handy on pet therapy visits as the residents cant physically pat him so he gets to lick till his hearts content! At home however its so annoying! I taught him 'Leave It' and its his key word to stop licking me!

Have You Ever Disliked Or Hated A Dog?
spoilt lab lives here replied to Danielle's topic in General Dog Discussion
I really dont like my partners gsd! She has caused so many problems and really if she was my dog she would have been put down a long time ago. She is only just starting to grow on my and she is 3 this year. My housemates beagle is a close 2nd for another dog I hate because of him I would never get a beagle! He barks all the time for nothing, chews everything in sight and cant be trusted around anything. really really dislike that dog! JessM- Im the same as you..the beagle i dont like would have been a great dog in the right hands but the owner has wrecked it and its a little shithead! -
Thanks Toujour..I couldnt even work that much out Thankyou!

Flea Bomb Question
spoilt lab lives here replied to spoilt lab lives here's topic in General Dog Discussion
Maybe I should flea bomb again and move the couches. It seems to be one couch in particular that has the problem as well. Grr its so frustrating! We never had them before but now the heat has come and they are everywhere in this new house. -
I have never had fleas in the house before but last week they were everywhere! I flea bombed the entire house and treated all the animals that was on Saturday. Now the fleas are back and that cats are scratching again. I vacuum everyday and have given the cats capstar as they were treated with spot-on last Sat. What can I do to get rid of these new emerging fleas? Do I need to bomb the house again?

I loved that doco! Of course we humans can pick the dogs different barks and the dogs follow our pointing fingers or pick up on the slightest cue such as the movement of an eye. The silver foxes were interesting. What was the go with them being on wire cages off the ground though. All I thought of was aww their poor feet

New Neighbours - Barking Dog
spoilt lab lives here replied to Michelleva's topic in General Dog Discussion
Let the neighbours know and give the dog some time to settle in. I had been in my new house not 10 days and had the r/e ring up because a neighbour had said the dogs were barking and also a letter in the mailbox from "the street" We knew exactly who it was from though and it was not the whole street lol. It really upset me that the neighbours didnt give us a chance to settle before they were complaining about us. So give it time.
