Mumsy, I adopted two 8 and a half week old pups from a rescue group three years ago. Their pregnant mother was surrenderd to the pound then rescued, where she whelped 10 pups. Long story short, the surrenderer got the guilts and contacted the rescuer to get her dog back (absolutely not) and got talked into rehoming her other dog (the sire), which is how I know the breeds that made up my pups. Their mother was a golden retriever/German shepherd cross and their father was a labrador/pointer cross. They were very boistrous playful pups but with consistent training, both formal (dog obedience classes) and informal at home, they've grown into two very well behaved adult dogs. This was them on their first week at home And now as adults Boy Girl They are big though. Our girl weighs 38kgs and our boy is 51kgs. I do worry about health issues like HD though, given their breed mix and the fact that they are the result of an irresponsible dog owner. I love them with all my heart and can't imagine life without them, but on the down side, they shed like crazy . Good luck with whatever you decide and if you do decide to take one of the pups I really like the idea of paying to have the mother desexed.

I always wanted to name a male dog either Mervyn or Athol, but my husband hated them, so we have a boy called Spud (because he looked like an unpeeled potato as a puppy). If I had a scruffy rough coated breed, I'd have to call him Rafferty. Not sure why, just seems like a good name for a scruffer.

No stickers in mine either. However, it does mention using the 'included stickers' on the info leaflet inside the box under the heading dosage reminders. It's a pain without them - I now use it on the 1st of every month.

Beanie just sits like a statue (in a trance like state) in front of whatever it is she wants, like the fridge, the dry food container, the bag of tennis balls etc. Spud, on the other hand doesn't beat around the bush. He will try and get his lead and walking harness of the hook in the laundry if he wants to go for a walk. If he can't get the lead off the hook he nudges it so that the clip hits against the wall and we can hear it. If he wants to go in the pool he goes in search of his dad's board shorts, which could mean making a noise under the clothers line (if they're there), or nudging the wardrobe door open if they are in there or the other week he found them over the side of the bathtub, so he carried them to the living room and dropped them at OH's feet. He's a clever boy. eft

Awwww, he looks so adorable in his inflatable collar (what a brilliant thing they are, I've never seen them here in Aus). So glad his foot is OK.

I had no idea Daphne was a dog, I thought you were talking about the plant, although I thought it was odd that it was flowering so late in Albury. Must have sounded bizarre when I asked if he had eaten any daphne.

Beanie always has to have something in her mouth when she greets us, it can be a toy, a twig, a leaf, anything - we call them singing sticks because the minute she has something in her mouth she starts singing (and dancing) and if she hits a high note she wets herself Spud, on the other hand tries to walk towards you while wagging his enormous body from the waist back - it looks a lot like the All Blacks doing the Haka(sp).

Could he possibly have eaten any of the daphne (leaves, flowers or bark) as it is toxic to dogs? Plants toxic to dogs

Agree with ellz, I would wait until he is older. I have a large mixed breed rescue dog that was desexed at 8 weeks of age (although he weighed a hefty 9kgs at that point). He is now three and cocks his leg on just about every tree and post when we go for a walk. He never, ever cocks his leg in the house (even when other dogs have been here) as he's house trained and I've also noticed that he never cocks his leg in his own yard - he squats like a girl (or a puppy) . So not sure how much validity there is to early desexing to stop leg cocking - it had no effect on mine.

Any update on Grover today?

Poor Grover, get well soon big boy. With redback spiders, I found one swimming in the dog's outside water bowl last Thursday when I went to refill it It's a very deceased redback now.

I would get it checked by a vet, but just as an FYI, we had a 70kg German shepherd cross and he developed a lump half the size of a tennis ball after a vaccination and it was there for two weeks. It happened every year after his vaccs. Best wishes for you puppy.

When this happened to Spud we first tried a sock which he promptly ripped off then an elizabethan collar, but he wouldn't move from his bed; he wouldn't eat or drink he was so terrrified of the collar. We then went back to the sock but placed a velcro band around his ankle and folded the top of the sock over it - we won, he couldn't get that off.

This was my heart dog Benny's eyes Spud - the potato with eyes Baby Beanie eyes (can't do adult eyes, she closes them every time I get the camera out, see last pic on this post)

My two both suffered from this when they first started swimming at the beach and Beanie would also throw-up after swallowing so much sea water fetching the ball. Luckily we lived within walking distance of the beach so could keep them in the yard for an hour or so afterwards till the squirts had stopped. After a few swimming excursions they either got over it or learned to clench their buttocks before entering the water. They swam at the beach for about 18 months after that and it never happened again. Hopefully your little boy will overcome it too.

My two large (mixed) breed rescue pups were raised on Nutro large breed puppy food. They did really well on it and had lovely shiny coats - here's a pic of shiny Spud

Thanks Cockerlover, they sure were a sweet little family. This morning she is still waiting on the other side of the garden for him. She hasn't taken the ducklings (or goslings?) into the pool since he disappeared.
