Dog Coughing? Huffing & Puffing?
persephone replied to kirsty79's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Sounds much like kennel cough... things which irritate his trachea will be collars (esp if he pulls) clod dry air, exertion... you can perhaps give him some benadryl cough syrup ..2/3 times a day ..probably a teaspoonful for a rottie size dog? ..ask the vet to be sure. -
I find this sad .... that you would mistrust a dog because it was either unwell, or keeping someone who is very unwell/fragile, company.I would also feel sad for a dog ,who for 10 years has been sleeping with the family to be suddenly excluded and locked in a laundry. Nelsona.. I hope the vet/Doctor can shed some light on what's happening .. just support your dog , make walks a wonderful time for you both , and I wish you all the best.

Yep..whatever dog breed, it is ,IMO, easier to prevent the start of a problem, than try and correct it later, once it's become a habit. ;)

Hi - a thorough vet check for your dog , maybe ? Sometimes when dogs do this with a particular`person ..the following, etc .. the person may be ill or very unhappy or something similar, and the dog picks up on this ... If you can afford it , I would suggest you get some help from a good recommended professional behaviourist in your area - someone who can visit, and watch your dog , and then suggest things to you and help you manage the situation. If you want to do this - then tell us which area you live in, and someone will recommend a person to contact . :) We can't tell you what is causing your dog's behaviour - we can guess only ...and our guesses may be incorrect ...

Ahh :) we haven't ever had one so serious at that young age ... -
Is it that long ago?

Welcome :) 6 weeks is very young to be away from their mum - is there a reason they were sold at that age ? this is from the DOGS NSW page I have a few links to other threads dealing with raising littermates/two pups :) You might get some help from them. LINK LINK I am also not sure about the feeding .. what are they being fed?

Widget will often bring a frog inside when she goes to bed They are not hurt ...she holds them in her mouth ..I don't see them, but see her mouth a bit puffy ... she will spit them out , and I wash them off in clean water before putting them back outside ...... poor frogs .

Most of our dogs like/love our cats :) They also love hunting feral cats ...but usually have to learn what's needed. A few nights ago, I went to put Allie, a 6 mth old, who has done no hunting yet, to bed, and could hear her barking some way away from the house . I called , and eventually she came ..but wanted to go back again, so I went with her. She ran to one spot, put the nose down, hackles up , and was tracking/growling.. so I presumed there was a strange cat ... Anyway, last night I could hear her barking /growling, went out with a strong torch, and asked her what was there..she kept on dashing to the fig tree, and barking/growling ... and eventually dashed in, and , a (smallish) feral cat erupted from under the tree and made its escape...as I didn't have my shotgun with me ,, and it didn't go up a tree . She will be a very useful little dog :) The love of Allie's life has always been Dougal , a big white/ginger cat .... she just adores him..and is literally all over him when she sees him ..poor Doogie. he won't ever sock her hard enough to discourage her , so just lies there like a big blob, while she whines and licks and rubs on him ..and occasionally they will wrestle (he's bigger than her ) I've not seen one of our pups so focussed on the ferals ... if she is as focussed on sheep work , she will be brilliant! :p ..or else she will be a professional feral cat hunter! here she is asleep with her favourite toy ..a cat;)
