  1. She;s a dog bred to have prey drive. She is now becoming a more capable ,almost adult dog , and habits she has learned over the past few months are now her normal way of behaving. your parents' whippets were working, doing what whippets were bred for , they were very well exercised, and had to think....and I bet if they did misbehave they learnt to do better! Your whippet plays with other dogs, plays with you ..goes to obedience one night a week ..and has not learnt the house rules yet ...not a lifestyle which will tire her brain out, or give her structure ... (and yes, I have trained a whippet or two ... ) Whippet pups are bit like eels .. they can wriggle their way into and out of trouble ;) I honestly think you have your hands full trying to keep the other dogs exercised and losing weight , without the added stresses in the household of an adolescent with prey drive, and it's not fair on the cats , who, one day, may well get hurt I too would suggest a professional, but I think they are a bit scarce where you live . Rehoming may save you and the whippet a lot of uncertainty and confusion ....not every person/household is suited to every dog we might fancy ....
  2. to be comfortable with being handled ALL over ...to have mouth checked;in between toes;under tail;in ears ; length of tail.. to come (we use a whistle) to trust and communicate .. by playing to sit .
  3. Ok.. probably not what you want indoors, but I would suggest the purple spray CETRIGEN.., and I would be inclined to use no more water. perhaps washing it is keeping it continually moist ....and touching it will , indeed be very painful cetrigen will sting a bit ... but it is usually good for bacterial things. or , you could also try BETADINE spray , as that will kill fungal infections, and bacterial infections. If you really need to wash it (and I would spray, instead of wipe ) then maybe dry with a hairdryer on COOLER temp. consider using COLLOIDAL SILVER .. a very very fine suspension of silver particles in water .. I have used it on cat abscesses etc , and believe it helps keep infection down. It does not sting or anything, has no smell , won't stain , and is not toxic when used normally.
  4. Aawwwww Those photos are just wonderful!! :)
  5. My vote first off would be a Frenchie .. don't know how they go in the heat though... a bedlington? (with a decent haircut ;) )
  6. I am so glad she is safe, and home . She must be a smart cookie to survive that time without coming to grief!! :)
  7. A lot of ab's can be given as injections .. some long acting .. ask him again if there's any other way ? maybe you could try a pill popper .. no need to force her mouth open ..or get fingers inside ..
  8. They are sounding more wonderful ! :) I like dogs with some independence .
  9. Agreed . Not something to encourage .. What does she do in her day? :) What training/walks/ play does she get .... seems there are things she would enjoy a lot ,if she likes the 'chase' ;) Nice sand pit !
  10. Farm (working) koolies & Koolie x - I live in the 'bush' , and I guess one reason I like the look of the 'Cats' is because they have a similar look to some of our dogs ;) HERE. Catahoulas sound my sort of dog in a lot of ways .
  11. I would be leaving her at the vets for a day or two ... let them do bloods etc and observe what's happening ..if she is that hard to orally medicate ..it will be much worse with a sore neck, and unfair on Tess
  12. Abilene - lovely dogs!! :) And lots of interesting info.
  13. She does have the most wonderful face ..and she looks so happy! Thankyou. For those who missed the first thread it's HERE
  14. :) :) Thank you for the good update ! Looking forward to pictures of the new and improved and larger Oscar ;)
  15. ;) a singleton prince/princess ... aaaahhh . Will mum share fresh meat with pup? Sometimes if Mum is chewing on a big bone ..then it seems a pretty good option to a pup ...
  16. That is a very disappointing thing to read , and certainly not what I would have expected from a 'professional'. How many posts do we see on here where dogs in dog parks have attacked dogs/pups ? Bear is naturally larger and older ..and he already 'knows his place' ..it is above a baby puppy . Being a puppy himself, he will naturally gravitate to floppy ears etc .. and perhaps does need work on bite inhibition that he missed out on while at the breeders . I hope that very soon you can obtain the services of another trainer .
  17. I have found their predator instincts cut in really fast when offered fresh bloody mince ..or a very large very meaty roo tailbone or marrowbone to suck/chew .I got sick of pups being covered in slop , and found this much easier :)
  18. This is all I do, basically .., also no verbal command . but after some time of picking up paw, I just tap gently behind the wrist , as a reminder, whilst still holding out the other hand . :) No treat though, just praise . They learn quite quickly , too!
  19. Thanks for the positive-sounding update :) keep us posted on progress ..and enjoy the new parent stuff !
  20. Have a look at the Panasonic Lumix range - their lens quality is excellent!
