  1. Never used a flea or tick product . Here we worm the old fashion way anyway
  2. We drive past all the vets in Canning Vale ,use Ranford maybe for the occasional puppy vacs or bee sting emergency .
  3. As i show my dogs i prefer males but i also have owned girls
  4. Yes it appalling BUT i also feel the fact some many non blind dog owners are constantly breaking the rules about sneaking dogs into places they shouldn't that business are getting feed up . I actually now of someone who said they would act blind to get there dog into the hotel room ,that alone disgusted me . Every day dog owners also need to lift there game & appreciate rules are there for all whether we like them or not
  5. Depends how bad the knots are & how close to skin they are. I would be getting the opinion of a good groomer first different tools can make moderate matt removal easy BUT it depends also on the dogs behaviour with matts being removed. Clipping would be the easiest option if the dog is very badly behaved ,cutting can be dangerous for the novice especially if the dog has no respect to allow you to brush it now. I also wouldn't chop the knots but splice through the knots down wards to break it up so it doesn't look butchered BUT you then need to address brushing & the tools you use. Also don't bath it with knots it will only make them worse. Chances are at that age its starting a big coat change so brushing needs to be regular & with the right gear
  6. rare breeds can at an extra cost . The TM breeders spend alot of money bring imports into the country to increase the gene pool so i would be expecting to pay a price reflective on the rarity . I guess it comes down to what one considers steep Although when it comes to price many cross breeds actually cost more than a health tested pure breed especially in pet shops . I would consdier a year wait nothing for the correct dog that you must factor will need to live with your children when the time comes especially as the dog will be 3/4 years old & set in its ways ,you need to ensure the dog no matter what breed is conditioned to this sort of change in its life so picking the right dog/breeder & time is well worth the wait .
  7. How much obedience & training are you willing to do ?? Those breeds will require brushing & will shed ?? Do you want an inside or outside dog?? The Tibetan Mastiff isn't for the lazy owner an untrained one will not be your perfect dog ' I wouldn't consider a Leo or Pyree to be intimidating both gentle giants especially the Pyree. All 3 are big dogs that will need dedicated training from a young age to enjoy being out in public & lead trained . I do think all 3 can be slobbers though
  8. I am a full time groomer but work from home . Alot would depend on the salon you end up at & how busy they are . Alot will depend on how long you are a bath/dryer/gopher before you work on the dogs . Alot will depend if you want to work saturdays as most salon do saturdays. It is very hard work & to be honest under paid & under appreciated . It is also depends on the type of groomer you want to be ,just a clip off person or a stylist with great scissor work & even hand stripping knowledge. I would say without knowing current salon wages you would havea very big drop in wages especially if you can't get full time . I enjoy what i do BUT also have show dogs so grooming is my life but i would also be upfront & tell anyone that has a nice 9/5 job with good pay to think twice
  9. Depends if she is over weight now or you just want her fitter ?? If she isn't fat i wouldn't be altering her food intake to much if you have doubled her exercise If she is fat then still factor in heavy exercise still needs a good diet
  10. who cares people own what they like ,there are plenty of dogs out there to suit what people want .
  11. You can take your dog but be aware it will limit what you are able to do. Dog shows are very busy & people are often in small spaces so if you really want to have a look or talk with the dog/s/people you will find it way easier without your dog especially if the show is indoors at KCC park . Watching the breed in the ring from the side lines is very limited in space & holding a dog or having one standing with you may result in you being asked to move out of the way as the marshaling area is limited & if other shows/groups are on there all very close together . The show mentioned is part of a busy weekend
  12. I would say around 3 months alot will depend on whether all the first ones are rejected & you need to try again & even once approved when the prefix is published if someone objects to its closeness you then start again .
  13. Your pup will be teething so most likely has a sore mouth . I would also suggest instead of stacking pup on the floor for examinations that you place pup on the table, there will be no issues doing this & pups find it less daunting being at a neutral level whilst small . Once pup has more confidence in the exam routine on the table then you can start going on the ground again . If person at training say s no ,tell them this what you want to do & you can do it at the shows as well
  14. If it covers a weekend then Qantas (AAE) have flight restrictions,Virgin have a limit on the number of dogs per flight (i think 2) but no flight restrictions for weekends. You have crate restrictions for both airlines that also must meet the size of the plane if a large/giant breed . Certain flat faced breed also face restrictions on flying . My dogs are frequent flyers & never ever would i sedate unless the reason was worth the risk. Due to the time of sedation pre flight i have witnessed dogs where the sedation has worn off & they have totally panicked over the effects of it wearing off & not knowing where they are .This panic alone increases the risk & the body temp to become irregular .
  15. He has an imperturbable courage in the guarding and defence of the herds entrusted to him and the property and home of his master. He attacks silently and enduringly. He regards his territory as his own property and will not tolerate any other living creature in it. * . Extremely bold, a little suspicious towards strangers. *. He defends the people entrusted to his care and his protection and their property, even with his life. He is self ,confident and may become aggressive if ill treated *When circumstances require, he immediately assumes an active-defensive posture, however, quickly calms down at the disappearance of threat * Independently minded, aloof and protective. Calm and patient. May be wary of strangers. *but wary of strangers when on duty. These are some breeds shown & what is listed in there standard as normal . Even look at police dogs, prison dogs these dogs have there working brains on when required & are wonderful family pets at home . All breeds vary ,yes some people make excuses for poor natures but there far & few between but there are breeds out there that need respect & for people to appreciate there special needs & not place the dog in a position of making it react.
  16. Having owned various breeds its very interesting to see how the public judge each. When we had our show greyhounds many years ago it was interesting to see parents allowing there kids to pat them & then ask what breed & have a total panic attack because they kill things . When i had my GSD who was very dark masked you would get the whats a little girl doing with a dog like that . Within the Setters it varies greatly I guess many people don't think but the greater majority do now what there saying & i often wonder what response they actually expect . When they are being disrespectful & wanting a reply you have to be the better person but i will be the first to admit i rarely reply to obvious people making a scene & when i do its usually im sorry i didn't realize your where talking about my breed & how many have you owned yourself ?? You can pick the people guessing a breed or asking a comment that is part of the human nature rumour mill & wanting to now if its fact or fiction & i am happy to educate these people & there children r.
  17. Irish Setters which by many folk even on here are considered stupid & people do like to tell you that even though they have no clue
  18. I prefer to show babies often but with it being fun. The problem being in Perth that our shows start to get less from May so it often comes down to getting the experience whilst you can . Also its coming into winter so undercover can be a whole different experience . I don't believe in showing a baby if it isn't some what trained to walk on a lead, stacking still should be taught but most babies get all excited when the judge goes over & that is no drama. As for practicing i rarely train unless i feel said pup needs a little work, generally its covered in every day things & standing in my breed with grooming from 8 weeks. As for minor class they should have more manners still fun & in some breeds its often this class you make skip & do other things as they go through the fugglies The reality is from 6 months they are able to gain points & so the dog should be able to do all the basics well but with a 6 month age mentality . If it can't walk or be examined chances are you won't get awarded points .
  19. I would say the greater majority of people do it all the right way. I also hear young children who have been taught dog education in school say to there parents that isn't the correct way to touch a dog & often these parents ignore there children comments which is very sad BUT you get to make the child feel special for being right . When we sell our puppies our folder contains the Vic Govt pet education section on how to pat, approach & when not to ,has pictures & is ideal ,Some adults may see it kids stuff but the reality is its very plain & simple. Parents think its wonderful because it is so colourful & easy to follow . Although i still have fond memories of the lady who went hysterical in the Show pavilion because one of my dogs slobbered on her child,i was abused no end because i should have taken better care & controlled what my dog did. Both sides are guilty of saying things . The general public often have no clue how hurtful some of the things they say are yet all of us sit there & take it because for the small few there is a greater number of great people. I feel for the poodle people who get all sorts of horrible things said about the trims, top knots ,that there poofy dogs & the list goes on. In my breed you get those who ask why you would own something so stupid, aren't they thick . You do sit there being polite & its hard work sometimes . There are lots of junior handlers out there who also get these comments said to them kids aged from 7 upwards ,you get the nasty comments made from the people outside the ring . I was 10 when i started & had joe public asking why i showed such stupid dogs . So my biggest comment to anyone attending shows would be ask politely to touch & if you have a comment that may seem funny to you just think the owners may not see it the same way .
  20. I haven't in all my years come across many rude people at shows with the public, Some may have explained why better but by the same token some of the public don't take being told not now well either & sometimes people need to do the sorry you can't because you can feel your dog isn't clicking with them or they have young children who are being monsters & with no control by the parents. Owners of any dog in any public situation are responsible for there dogs actions & we have to make decisions on whether we want the dogs patted or not from what is also demonstrated by people. Its amazing how many parents bring there young children to shows who are terrified by dogs & even though its a safe environment in manys ways forcing a scared child to walk around dogs can end badly . There are people who drop there kids off at dog shows & then go shopping because they can apparently play with the puppies . You do need eyes in the back of your head because you also get the nutters who have evil intentions. People have let dogs out of crates, poisoned, chopped coat off & others things so no matter what owners need to be stranger danger aware of even there pets .
