  1. Cleo if your dogs are happy dont change . Some BARF feeders will make out your doing harm to your dogs by not following there way of feeding but feeding is a personal choice & if your dogs are in good condition ,happy etc then dont change. Barf isnt for all dogs just like some commerical brands dont suit certain breeds As to the time at vets compaered to barf feeders is a little over the top,i now of die hard barf feeders who spend more time at the vets than we ever have so that is no arguement . We have boarding kennels & we see dogs feed all sorts of stuff from die raw to tin & all the dogs are in equal condition . We personally dont use Hills as it cant be given to one of our breeds but many use it with success. I agree ditch the rice, vegies but give chicken knecks, raw mutton/flaps,tuna yoghurt each day.In summer we give carrots for the dogs to chew on so the flys dont hang around unless its bath day. Dont worry
  2. All our pups are spayed ,no spaying no pup very simple as a breeder we can find many great owners but these same owners can often become the same people that want just 1 litter or joe bloe ask to use Max at stud. If all these so called responsable owners took care of there entire males/females then there wouldnt be all these opps litters. All our retired stock are spayed & not one has got fat, lost condition or what ever other "Human" excuse there is . The simple fact is many male owners wont get there dogs desexed due to there own male macho image, like owning a pitball is to many others believe keeping there males entire gives then same image. Very few of these responsable intact owners ever check there dogs testicles so they wouldnt a clue as to whats going on because many think its gross to feel a dogs nuts. When we groom dogs we check & we have sent a few owners of to the vets due to there intact dogs having issues that they didnt notice. BYB are getting very clever when phoning breeders in the attempt to get entire stock so spaying is the only way to stop them so as i say all our pups are spayed & known of them have grown differently due to it . I reckon compulsory desexing unless a good reason is given is a great way to go
  3. The sad part is the owner is probably following the advice qiven by the breeder & taken it to the extreme in the hopes of the pup getting no issues latter life. Maybe they had a previous GSD with issues & this time are trying to be more. What these people obviously dont realize is proper nutrition & weight is just as important as not letting it get fat, that it needs to be a realistic weight to grow steadily not fast. Its a hard one especially when they think there doing right we get them all the time as clients going off on there own tangnet but having idea about the consequences until too late. If it was me i,d bring it up if talking in a very mild manner but not pushy maybe even say what does the breder think of the prgress ??
  4. Keeping a pup lean in early puppy life doesnt mean skinny. What you want is weight appropriate for the pup just ever so slightly under but no condition means when it does grow it has no weight to utilize. In my large breed pups we feed a good diet & each dog has it own unique growth spurts & weight ratio but i never keep them skinny
  5. I agree this is the exact reason why males & females should be spayed if there is no good reason to be entire. The outcome depends on what it is ,how much its spread if its the worse. Personally i would be spaying asap not waiting. Very few pet owners ever check there males testes & we through our grooming parlour have sent many owners off to the vets due to abnormal testes & some have come back with no issues, some have had the worse cancer but the owners hadnt a clue, they wanted them to be entire but no one of wanted to check there dogs either. We have also sent bitches of who have showed symptons that the owners said yeah does it all the time,1 died of pyometra ,a couple of others had to be spayed asap
  6. With my large breed pups of that age i dont walk them ,they self exercise what i do do is take them out the front to socialize & see the world. If i was to walk them it would be a 15 min max walk down the road & back. You will notice that your puppy will play & then flop when its had enough & generally its in short spurts. What you dont want to do is go ponding the pavement when there joints are still soft & growing. At 4 months the brief walk is socializing & co ordination & lead skills then back to them self exercising . Take it slow & steady by 6 months you can venture further & do a tad more but slow & steady is a must. Even if you do obedience classes good clubs break up the class time to suit puppies needs
  7. I dont feed can but many people do & there dogs live happy ,healthy lives. Feeding is a personal choice & i respect someones elses choice ,if there dog is fine on the stuff then why should they change. 2 of australias all time top show dogs where feed canned because it suited them & thats what they enjoyed each to there own i say.
  8. The dog should be on the diet recommend irrespective of your thoughts & weaned over slowly. The meats you are expecting her to eat are not the norm & extremely different in taste ,smell & appeal factor. It is unfair to expect the dog to just eat what you want it too overnight. Do whats right for the dog, feed what its use to & introduce little portions gradually,to be honest if i had to eat that diet id starve too.Tripe, liver,ox tails are very unusual foods & many dogs wouldnt eat them. There is a difference between hungry & eating & swapping to a diet overnight that is to the extreme of the diet its use to. Buy some hills which its stomach is use to & do small changes, the diet may not be perfect in your eyes but its something the pup/dog is use to .
  9. My 2 showdogs are both bee reactive & as such i carry injectables from my vet everywhere, just returned from melbourne & they where on hand there too
  10. Raz i disagree with you ,we have had stripped breed for over 25 yrs & yes we clip our pets with no issues at all it doesnt make them any hotter or colder ,very few people will hand strip pets & if done incorrectly will only create a painful experience for the dog. Not every stripped breed also has true coat texture & as such isnt strippable. Clipping is veru acceptable & done regular is better than a coat that isnt worked on correctly
  11. The coat is traditionally stripped but there is nothing wrong with clipping the coat for convience,it makes the coat texture softer but not any less healthier
  12. All my large breeds are feed on raised bowls & if you believed every bloat research done you would never own a large breed. Every tom, dick & harry have done research on the topic & come up with different results, the only thing they do agree on is commonsense feeding, all the studies have been done by experts . In my breed they did major studies into the issue & realized that many theories didnt come true. I have for 20 plus yrs feed on raised bowls not for bloat but for ease of eating. I am of the belief if the feet where bad from day 1 & the dog has been feed correctly then it is meant to be,diet can be a factor & yes whilst teething some breeds seem to have feet issues but many go overboard & do more harm.
  13. Staffys are notorious for this type of itch,i suggest you contact the breeder who may be able to give you some advise .
  14. C7 does exist but kennels & clubs do not ask for that specific jab. Personally we dont use it as many dogs can react to it. Very few dog show people use this vacc either,if your not in a lepto prone area why vacc for it,yes some dogs should be done & research on the reasons why it would be apprepiate for some dogs but generally it isnt needed
  15. Mel very possible the dog at work could be the culprit, also depending on the breed if its rubbing against his legs he may react to the dog. Im not allergic to dogs but there is one breed that if it touches me i come out in a rash sort of thing
  16. Yep fleas will bite some & not others & i have seen people who where bitten on the leg area more that other parts of the body. If the dog has had fleas then good chnace there in your house. If it was me i'd flea bomb anyway better to maybe stop them now then let them breed more in the warmer months plus it kills other things. But lets face it it could be so many things but if i had a small incling it was a flea i would treat it
  17. Schnauzers dont shed but if the coat is keeped hand stripped & not maintained correctly it will break at some point or self shed due to natural process.Ofcourse the hand stripping means plucking the coat out so you are exposed to the dander on the tip. For pets just clip much simple & better for allergy people
  18. Desexing usually means a male will not cock his leg but some still while. If he is still squatting be happy & praise him for peeing that way,we encourage all our show males to squat
  19. We have boarding kennels & some clients have trained food refusal but i can truley say when the owners arent around the dogs dont follow the theory. We had 1 dog that was FR trained the owner was in a car accidient & in hospital very ill, relatives dropped the dog off & no one new it was FR trained nor the word. I can tell you now it was a very distressing time for us,the dog & the relatives. The dog finely ate due to being so hungry & we where so grateful for that because it could have ended badly(the owner died). So remember if you do teach it a word then let family members now, have it on the vet records or let any person who will be responsable for the dogs incase of emergencies now. I have friends who are very high up in obedience & trialling & i now they wont train FR but will do scent work only. each to there own ,my dogs arent trained for FR but generally speaking when the dog respects your voice & you say "leaveit" they will, whether it be food, dead animal etc etc its all about total control & awareness of what your dogs doing offlead. many people let them offlead & they go so far away that owners wouldnt have aclue whats up ahead to even yell "leave it"
  20. Yes i would clip an older collie ,in a perfect world keeping the coat would be great but with age it can often be more comfortable on the dog to clip off & keep fluffy. If its bum is knooteed then that would cause discomfort anyway
  21. I agree wouldnt give c5 but i wouldnt vacc a dog of that age with a prior history of cancer. I dont think its worth the risk of what could happen
  22. I dare say as hes outside his desire for company becomes all too much outside which is his territory,it sounds like when you enter the backyard dog is pack leader & humans fear him .Some dogs will do anything for extra company & when roused he may find that time whilst getting in trouble still gives him company. Firstly is he spayed??? What do you feed?? Pulling the clothes of the line isnt normal but a sign of boredom or attention seeking??? How old is he ???? Persoanlly i would buy a crate & crate train him so he can start to be inside calmly,it shouldnt be used for bad behaviour but a tool at present where he can be inside, see the family hear the noises etc. Next thing is to establish pack leadership. i would also buy some gardening gloves & put chilli or something hot all over & when dog goes to mouth let him grab glove & firmly say "sit",at present the dog nows all of you fear his behaviour & the dog nows you have no control at that point. Some dogs are hyper active & what you need to do is fined more stimulating/challenging games for this dog, something where his intelligience can be challenged but at the same time you gain control & respect of him. I would also ask you instructor about "clicker" training & research it on the net, very simple & works so well
  23. No judgement but the truth ,someone who choices not to do right by there dog is selfish. This person wont do what is best for the dog for no good reason but is content with having an obese dog that is suffering "cranky" you beat
  24. Geez owner created aggression :D Remember there is no point seeking training advice if all family memebers arent willing to change there attitude to being a responsable owner,at present your using your dog as a form of entertaiment & not treating it in a way that a dog should be & now the dog is paying the price for what everyone thought was cute or what ever other silly reason. As said if you dont seek help your dog will only get worse & if declared dangerous or bites the outcome will not be good for the dog & remember it wasnt the dogs fault. He doesnt listen as he has no respect for any of you. Its seems you want your cake & eat it a well behaved dog isnt boring but a safe animal that is a pleasure to own & take out in public ,you either want a well behaved dog or stick to what you have??? Also dont go up to dogs in cars to get there attention that isnt responsable nor fair on the dogs ,
