  1. Cardboard rolls are a good option too. Easy to pick up the mess when pups finished with them. You can also put pup's kibble if that's what you're going to feed in a plastic soft drink or milk bottle. Don't forget to take off the label & plastic ring at neck. ETA Congratulations on your new addition. My friend at my obedience club is getting her 2nd SP puppy in a few weeks.
  2. Best of luck Ranger00, he's just gorgeous. 0f course you know that they are the best looking puppies there are.
  3. Rather quiet in this thread at the moment. I miss hearing all about the intended arrivals.
  4. I always loved April's ears & not knowing much about the standard except for semi-erect ears I just assumed they were semi-erect. I judged all other ears against hers. Something I discussed with Tilba's breeder. Her mother has rose ears & sire almost semi-erect. I didn't realise Borders had such a wide range of ear sets until I started going to shows. My son had a cross breed dog & she had ears like the Flying Nun's habit. When she was teething they did all the usual strange things, even to the point of being erect, & that was a sight as they were huge ears. I was so glad when they settled down although they always looked quite comical on her.
  5. When I buy lamb flaps I cut off as much of the visible fat I can & give Panda 2 ribs together & about 3 or 4 for Tilba. I also sometimes get turkey wings from woolies but have never seen the necks. If they have tiny legs I will them. With the wings I cut off the flap of skin on one side & trim the other. You could also try lamb shanks, although expensive these days. My guys also have large chunks of beef pieces so they are forced to chew them up rather than swallow without chewing. As a snack once or twice a week they also get chicken feet or hearts.
  6. That's what happened in my household. I would tape Tilba's erect ear, not to well I might add as I didn't really know how & she has such thick hair in her ears that it wouldn't stick well. Anyway, the longest the tape lasted was about 3 days & it would be off. Found out months later that my oh & son's would take it off because they thought it was cruel. It does flop over a little bit but mostly she wears it erect.
  7. Scary stuff. I saw a distribution map of the east coast which included Armidale NSW & the ACT. Didn't think they were tick areas.
  8. I was told to wait at least 2 months after a season so everything goes back to normal & prevent haemorrhage.
  9. You can apply it as soon as you like AFTER a bath as long as pup is completely dry. DO NOT shampoo for 48 hours after you apply you spot on tick /flea treatment :) I had read/heard that you should wait 2-3 days so the body oils have a chance to distribute over the dog & so distribute the product. When going to Newcastle last year with our dogs we were told to apply Advantix twice, 2 weeks apart, if we weren't already using it for ticks. Interesting luvsdogs. I have never heard that you should wait after bathing your dog to apply Advantix. I pretty much always apply it the same day. At least once a month anyway as I wash my guys every 3 weeks. When you say you were told to apply it twice, 2 weeks apart you mean every fortnight. Yes ?? If so that is correct to help with Tick protection. Still go over your dogs at least daily to check for them. Yeh, Advantix is applied every two weeks for tick protection, as standard. So those instructions weren't anything new. The leaflet in the box is a bit vague when it comes to application after washing etc That's all it says in regards to water, nothing about waiting periods before or after. (bolding mine, because I'm not sure most people realise soap washes it off) Yes I know that, but what was meant was if you don't usually use it at all, to make sure you use it twice & not just once before going to a tick area.
  10. Dogs don't need mince, they should have meat in large chunks, all the better to clean their teeth. The action of mincing gives the meat more surface area for bacteria to grow. I originally heard it was like stodge & they just suck it up with no need to chew & only recently about the bacteria thing. Poor Hank hope he's feeling better soon. I know Panda had diarrhoea when I 1st got him & even today have to make sure I introduce different meats so slowly.

  12. Thanks ness & Tassie, I thought it was so, just double checking. I know an instructor at my obedience club before I joined, did/does agility & judges. She only ever has mixed breed dogs & fought for them to be able to compete in agility.
  13. I go on a Yahoo raw feeding group & they say that raw meat has less protein levels that kibble because meat is mostly water. I have also heard that a raw diet may help with aggression issues.
  14. She doesn't mention paralysis ticks which I don't think they have in the USA. The few times I've taken my dogs to a tick area I have used Advantix & I have a cat. I was told that it is safe after 24 hours after it has dried. I found it very stinky & sticky/greasy & didn't think it would ever dry. My dogs don't have much to do with my cat but if yours does I'd be separating them for the 24 hour period after application. I also used Frontline spray on my JS when he was a puppy. I told the vet what I'd heard about the product & she said no, don't apply if the dog is clean. It works best if the dog has it's natural oils intact. I found it had a very strong unpleasant odour as well.
  15. Call me but does that include Limited register BCs? I would love to enter Tilba in DWD but we aren't very good, in fact we are terrible. Looks like we'll have to go down to Melbourne dogless as we are going to play it by ear accommodation wise. If all else fails we could stay with oh's nephew but his kids are terrified of dogs so no chance of taking them.
  16. I don't advocate it all the time. My BC used to get 1/4 tin with her chicken wings. My present dogs don't get it much now, only if they need medicating so I can crush their tablets up in it or for powders.
  17. I've heard for & against & err on the side of caution & won't get them.
  18. If she's anything like my BC, no she won't have. Tilba is a real garbage guts. I bought one of those kid's wheely bins as a garbage & so far she's stayed out of it. My human lot are deadly when we have BBQ chicken, have to remind them every time to put the bones in the bin properly & not leave them on the kitchen bench.
  19. Re the Proplan. Why do they always put beet pulp in dry food? It's nothing but a sugar & when I mentioned it at the pet barn I buy my pet products the storeman said it was to lessen the smell of the poo. Although in this one it's at the end, but Vit C is mid-way & dogs don't need it because they produce their own. I've heard & seen on youtube wonderful things about coconut oil too. I bought some but haven't used it enough to see it's benefits.
  20. My previous Border Collie was allergic to wheat, it made her incontinent. So the last few years of her life she lived on Nature's Gift tinned, except the lamb & pasta, & raw chicken pieces with the occasional lamb shank or flaps. It's cheaper than the ones you mentioned & made in Australia & has been recommended as one of the best for dogs.
  21. I think it was in Give Your Dog a Bone that I read, many years ago, that chicken doesn't have hydatids. So safe to feed the liver if your dogs will eat it. I've tried many different ways & my food fanatic dogs won't have a bar of it. They will eat the hearts though I've heard they are a muscle meat & not offal. Dr Tom Lonsdale's Raw Meaty Bones diet is better for dogs. It doesn't include any plant matter as dogs don't need or benefit from it. His other book Works Wonders gives you more of what to feed your dogs. http://www.rawmeatybones.com/book-ww.php
  22. With checking your dogs RiverStar have you ever found ticks on your dogs using Advantix? I don't live in a tick area & have never seen a tick on a dog & always worry about taking them to a tick area.
  23. I take my dogs with me when I go to EP, one at a time of course, when I want to see their breed being shown. I don't stay long usually. If it's a big show there are stalls selling things so a good opportunity to get some doggy items.
