  1. Whippets are excellent family dogs, their favourite place is in bed with the kid of their choice. My Grandsons have a Whippet for their very best friend, and they are very active boys. What coat type suits them best, something easy care if they spend a lot of time on the beach, or are they prepared to do some grooming. Do they mind having hair all over the house or do they want a low shedding breed?
  2. It is the eggs and the larva that are the problem, carpets can make it very hard to get to them all. Did the Flea Bombs you used have an Insect Growth Regulator in them. It is very hard to eliminate them if all the products you use are only killing the adult fleas. Raid Flea Killer Plus, Protect a Home (? made by virbac) spray work well they get to the eggs and larvae as well. Steam Cleaning the carpets and soft furnishing helps too.
  3. I love the looks on the faces of some of the adults when they get mobbed by the pups, some have a such a happy type glow, others are like oh ok here we go again just leave my ears on my head LOL
  4. We have found that in certain areas the collars work pretty well, Preventic collars work well where I am but in surrounding areas Killtix work better. In bad seasons a rinse every 3 days with Fidos Rinse concentrate has been needed. If it a paralysis tick area you are moving to then nothing beats daily checks as well.
  5. 5 pups is a decent sized litter for a Chihuahua. Is your friend able to take her dogs temperature? Maybe a visit to the Vet is in order to see if everything is ok.
  6. You have a problem with Breeders? Obviously you have had a brad experience, life is like that, we all come across something that cheeses us of once in a while but don't let one experience tarnish your view. There are many excellent Breeders out there who go out of their way to support puppy buyers all the way, you will meet a lot of them on here if you hang around.
  7. If we had more breeders like Jed the world would be a better place. furballs take your negativity to another place this thread doesn't need you.
  8. You have eggs hatching, and larvae developing and that happens over time not all at once, and until they have all hatched and all the adults have been killed you will continue to get fleas. If you have a high flea burden in your yard and house and it sure sounds like it, they will be jumping on the dogs every time they walk past, then they will be killed. Fleas only feed on the dogs they don't spend their whole life on the dog, they will be in the yard and in the house, in your car, and anywhere else you can think of. Treat the animals, treat the yard and treat the house, and on it goes until you break the cycle.
  9. I think most breeds with various colours can strike this, some colours have mass appeal, and if breeders can provide those in an quality animal why not. Silver poodles, more recently red poodles, blue danes all come to mind. I would take have chocolate lab if I were to have one, I like the colour, but I also know what I like in a Lab so it would have to be the full package.
  10. To prevent BYBs and puppy farmers breeding from their stock.
  11. 4 month old Pointer pup full access to house, home alone.....oooh....might not be pretty.
  12. Have you checked his ears and his skin folds?
  13. Insecticides only kill the adult fleas, or it you are lucky the larvae as well, so, more eggs have hatched. Treating the environment can take some time with repeat treatments depending on the products you are using.
  14. He was doing crowd dispersal yes? Looked about right to me.
  15. We have rule in our house when we have pups around, leave it lying around and it is your fault not the pups when it goes missing or is destroyed. Teaches children to be tidy, and bigger children as well. Pups will investigate anything they find just like toddlers do, they don't have hands so they use their mouths, all very normal. Some pups are good and touch very little, others can be absolute horrors, so the pick it up or lose rule is handy.
  16. Good on you Melree for giving this boy a chance, I hate seeing the GSD in that situation. I pulled a beautiful GSD girl from the pound not too long ago, no meat on her and covered in skin lesions, she is now starting to look like the lovely dog she was born to be. Long slow road ahead with her skin, but she has gained condition and has the most superb temperament and been here before smarts. A GSD pup was in the future here when our big old woofer passes, looks like that spot has been filled earlier than we planned.
  17. Find a breeder that does all the checks, breeds the type you want, the colour you want and go from there. Some Lab breeders will breed no other colour than Black, they wont have another colour in their yard, no different to preferring Choc IMO. I agree with Sandgrubber there are Lab breeders out there bent on breeding top quality Labs coated in Choc. Badly bred chocs are dime a dozen, I would pay extra for a goodun, if I was looking for one.
  18. This goes around and around in circles every time it comes up, there are no easy fixes, because they all involve people actually taking responsibility for their decisions and actions. We could make endless lists of TO DO and Not to Do Don't get a pet until you are in a position to properly care for it. Do your homework and choose the pet that suits your circumstances. Take full responsibilty for your pet and its actions. IMO the first two are so very important and so very often overlooked.
  19. For the average not overly active dog 2% - 3% of their body weight would be a rough starting point, but all dogs have different requirements, some dog burn up huge amounts of energy and need a considerable amount more, some will do well on the smell of food. You really need to be able to judge the body condition of your dog.
  20. There is no exact recipe for patties, you will find heaps of variations if you search the topics here, or have a read of Billinghursts books. As far as bones go, the bigger the variety the better, and unless you have a obese dog there is nothing wrong with an active healthy dog eating fat, dogs need fats, why remove essential fats from a dogs diet only to have to add something else for coat and skin. Lamb breasts are also good bones as are roo tails, lamb necks, turkey necks.
  21. I agree. Compulsory desexing is not the answer. Yes, I think he will win too.
  22. You have only had her a few days, stick with what her breeder was feeding. Do not hand feed her, she will eat out of her dish when she is hungry, hand feeding sets you up to keep spoiling her. Have a chat to your breeder.
