Ideally before 4 months of age but certainly by 6 months if you are in a Heartworm risk area. There are quite a few options for Heartworm prevention, daily tabs, monthly tabs, monthly spot on, and yearly injection (not something I would use)

Met A New Breed Today But Can't Find The Proper Name

Komondor, maybe? -
I would certainly invest in a secure run for when you are not home, sadly they do not all grow out of it and for some it almost becomes a quest to destroy as much as they can. I had one that managed to destroy both the push mower and the rideon, mud flaps, push bikes and various electrical cables, car parts and too many other valuables to mention because the lock the dog up rule kept being ignored. She never stopped. Every time someone uttered "she must be over that now" she destroyed something else. Eventually she grew too old to take on the big ticket items but until went over the bridge at 15 she destroyed things if given the chance. A run will pay for itself regardless, and save you a lot of stress.

You never know, she may have been having a slumber party! Seriously though, and maybe we're just really awesome but I can assure you when we have patients in hospital/boarding they aren't frantically searching for their owners. Most of them are too busy sussing out the new areas and smells and seem to have an 'out of sight, out of mind' concept when it comes to their owners. Actually I had pictured Renae head down snuffling along checking out the place having a good old sticky beak. Not to make light of the OPs concerns but most Cavs would be doing just that.
-
Thanks jerojath ;) I realize that, but they did say someone would be checking on them through the night..so I'm not sure what went on All our hospital cases are checked on during the night, and yes at times slept with, you don't know that no one checked on Renae. It is quite possible that she was checked and that the cage was not properly fastened at that time. I quite often have to follow a tired vet around in the morning who has been in and out all night checking on cases, and cleaning up their coffee cups and deciphering 2am notes. Sending them home for a shower and change of clothes so they don't scare the first clients of the day happens too after a really nasty night.

Purina One, Beneful, Supercoat, Lucky Dog are all Purina as well, and Bonnie.

Exactly, with 10,000 dead dogs (likely more) already because they "looked like Pitties" when all this shit first started..... No reason not to worry about his latest turn of events. The only way to stop this is to end BSL completely.

There are quite a few kennels that refuse entire animals full stop, especially cats. During peak time I can fully understand a kennel refusing entire bitches, it would be totally disruptive having a bitch come in season in the kennels. I see nothing shonky about that in the least.

What a nice boy he looks like he may well be GSP X Pointer, far too much dish for a GSP.

To Owners Of Elderly, Active Dogs
Crisovar replied to arrow's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I really do not think there is a formula, I have a house full of elderly dogs, all purebred so we can't claim hybrid vigour . They have all had varied diets, one old boy now does best on a premium commercial diet with very little extras, he has cartrophen coming into winter as he gets a bit stiff, and apart from that is a happy old boy. A large dog he has had a very active show career and working gundog life so hasn't been pampered. Another eats anything and I think has a cast iron gut, is on no meds whatsoever, is as blind as a bat at 15 but bosses anyone and everyone and spends her day exploring the yard and digging holes, she navigates up and down 8 steps each time she comes and goes from the house. Their diets all their younger lives consisted of a mix of dry foods and raw, bones, cooked meat and veg and the odd dog roll or premium tin. The larger dogs always had lots of exercise and training, free running and road work, the littlies free running and no road work. The odd visit to the chiro for a couple, no annual vaccs. -
Justice For Tango.supreme Court 29th March Brisbane

And that's about it folks. Fight on, but no dog is safe until we end BSL, and as an ANKC Breed owner I am thankful that so many mutt owners joined the fight, we should be fighting for all dogs not just our own narrow view of which breed is more entitled to live than others. No dog is more entitled than other. Widen the divide between them and us with all your bitching and breedist comments, but mean while all dogs are in firing line, and if you are expecting to be safe in your own little corner you are fooling yourself. -
Skin Problem Maybe Due To Our Yard?
Crisovar replied to Zojambra's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I would not be using any of the whitening shampoos especially the horse ones until you solve the skin issues, they can be very drying and and irritating to sensitive skins. -
You really think that having a piece of paper is going to save dogs?
-
On so many levels Why? Why all the and eews, humans are concieved by AI, they have to get the sperm for that somehow, horses too, dogs???
-
Probably inseminate the bitch exactly the same way many legit breeders who do their own fresh AI do.
-
Wouldn't you hope a person breeding "any dog" would take the sire to the vet if it was hit by a car? And I'm pretty sure that when they collect semen... It isn't a bungled handjob.... into a condom.. Wouldn't a ethical breeder take their dog to a professional person or place who does that... kind of thing.... I don't know... but it seems pretty wrong to me But your right... I don't know... How do we know the dog wasn't treated for its injuries?? We don't know. Many legit breeders do their own fresh AI. All the professional person is going to do is collect the semen exactly the same way, no other way to get it out!!

Finding It Hard To Find The "one"
Crisovar replied to italmum's topic in General Dog Discussion
If a Breeder did not show concern and make further enquiries before placing a toy breed pup with a family of young children, I would be worried. Puppies and children are a delightful combination, and most of the time it goes smoothly, but it also has the potential to go very badly. Some very lovely, well mannered, nicely behaved children still can have no idea how to interact with animals, so lots of care has to be taken. I have seen some terrible injuries inflicted on baby animals by otherwise nice children, take it slowly and do your homework. I don't think you have had a long wait either -
It is hard to watch them grow old and frail. 15 years is a grand old age for a dog, and it is only to be expected that his organs are not coping, all the stresses, the seizures and the cocktail of drugs will be taking their toll. Seizures really knock them around and with his age he really would be feeling it. I hope he rallies, but sometimes we just have to make that final hard decison. It is never easy but is the last gift you can give them.

The sort of puppy you would come home with would have less chance of being suitable than one from a registered reputable breeder who has also done their homework. Badly bred pups with unsound minds and bodies are dime a dozen, many of them end up in the pound. Yep, the type of breeders I mentioned are not thick on the ground, neither are the pups they produce that are in great demand.
-
Dogs are surrendered to pounds every day because they are not suitable for the home they were purchased for, not because there are too many dogs. The pages and pages of dogs available for sale that you mention are not all suuitable for the people who take them home. "I wanted a poodle, couldn't get one so I bought this moodle it is not what I expected" "I wanted a calm medium sized dog this is far too active and demanding" "Far too rough for the kids" " Can't look after the coat" There is a shortage of well bred healthy sound pups from responsible breeders who health test and know their stuff and provide quality aftercare, most of their buyers end up with a pup that suits.
-
Can you, any day of the week, come home with a healthy, sound puppy from a registered, responsible breeder who health tests and offers a lifetime backup?? If you can you live in a different world than I do.
-
It is possible for a dog just like us to be allergic or sensitive to any common food or product.
-
Well, there are a hell of a lot of damn good breeders and owners that you just wiped, including many ont his forum. Your experience seems very limited, maybe this has formed your view.

Any large Breed of dog in full on attack mode would be very hard to stop, please don't fool yourself that your Dobe would be any different. If things went bad, do you really think you would find it easy to pull your dog off?? Owners of any breed have to ensure that their dog is never a threat to anyone, but for many of the large breeds as owners we also have to protect them from what the public "fear" they may do as well. Did you know that Dobes are baby killers, that GSD just turn and attack their families these are common furfies that are out there in the public mind now. Your perception of the type of dog that attacked your pup is the same. To stop the brainless killing that is BSL we have to change the mindset of people, and sorry you are one of them. I rescue, and everytime I rescue a small cute fluffy or similar I get an overwhelming chorus of sympathetic voices, and mutterings about how people are cruel etc etc. My latest rescue is a beautiful, intelligent GSD, and the reaction to her is totally different, including "you should have left her be PTS". I find that very very sad. People are the reason we have BSL, and people are the reason it will continue, not the dogs.
