  1. Racing greyhounds get osteosarcoma (bone cancer) and pannus (eye disease which will blind them if not treated) amongst other things including thyroid problems.
  2. I believe all greyhounds have to be DNA tested before being used for breeding and that this has been in for some years now.
  3. All my martingale collars have the webbing base and welded fittings, would use nothing else. The webbing is similar to seat belt material so super strong. They are proper martingales which require adjusting each time they are used, not just slipped on and off. I have some 2 inch collars but much prefer 1 1/2 inch and don't like the black dog martingales at all. We all have different tastes and experiences :)
  4. Rebanne - do you know if there are limits in Victoria as to how many litters each bitch can have a year? There is something in place. I don't race greyhounds so am not up with all the in's and out's but talking to someone a few months ago there does seem to be some restrictions. The main one I recall is something along the lines of: if the bitch didn't race and/or didn't win, they were allowed 2 litters to prove their worth as a brood bitch. If none of the off spring did any good and the owner wanted to breed again, they had to say why and get approval from the racing board. All matings are recorded, all results of those matings have to be recorded, misses, how many born alive, how many born dead, if the numbers don't match up between being born and ear marked (12 weeks) what happened to the missing pups (not sure if you need a vet to sign of on ones that died in those 12 weeks). Stud dogs were limited to 14 matings a month but I don't know the current regulations regarding this now everything is AI and often frozen semen is used. And of course semen is split into breeding units. As I said I don't race greys, mine are show bred, so a disclaimer: this is all what I am pretty sure happens, some of it did happen but might have changed, and I am relying on my memory which can be faulty :)
  5. JANET FLANN: Well, they bludgeon them to death. That's quite common. But shooting is quite common. If they get to the vets to be euthanased properly they're lucky, really. Really???? Think this person needs to stop being a drama queen. Shooting - yes. Bludgeon, never heard of it happening. Yes some sick bars*&^d may have done it in the past, same as some rare few cut the ears off so they couldn't be identified. In Victoria nowadays all greyhounds disposed of have to be accounted for to the GRV.
  6. Mine have never seemed to give two hoots if a pack member died. Only indication has been a slight period of adjustment while everyone sorted out the new pecking order. I let my other dogs out once when the leader passed. They just danced around, including on top of poor Zoe, wanting me to throw the ball. Never done it again.
  7. Why don't you contact them and ask? it's the only way you will know. :) Plenty of breeders transport their pups all over the country but some don't.
  8. umm, you are after semen from any other dog as long as it's a Schnauzer? Any Schnauzer? And to be used straight away? Hmm
  9. I've used ACE for dogs for car travel and IME it lasts for hours and that's a very small dose. That's all I can tell you. I think I'd be ringing the vet just for peace of mind.
  10. um, can people please stop quoting the photo's in each reply. Makes it hard for some people with limited bandwidth, on phones, etc. Thank you.
  11. I would think you are being incredibly rude. And would have no trouble telling you where to go.
  12. OMG, how about "put a leash on your dog so it doesn't cause a car crash" That would be worth reporting as a road safety issue Where I live is semi rural, there's a lot of retirees who are stuck in the old ways, like they lived on the farm, so lots of dogs off leash. Mostly well behaved, every now and then a dog runs in the road, with the odd sad accident. Now I've got the choice of hoping the old guy got the lesson or report him and maybe they take his dog. : ) : ) or maybe a life or two is saved from injury or worse. You are making excuses for these people yet jump all over others.
  13. Wonderful progress. To me this suggests she has a good baseline temperament and while she may never be as good as she could have been if she had been raised properly, you will most likely still end up with a good companion. Just take your time and as persephone said, be very careful which trainers you use.
  14. Green to me says snail bait or rat sack, could Treble have got into any of that? Or less dangerous things are green crayons or texta's.
  15. I am so very sorry this has happened Pers. R.I.P Mr Wilson, painfree.
  16. I am so sorry that you lost them both. The pain is bad enough when one goes, but two is just so cruel. Take time out to grieve as you want, be kind to your self. R.I.P two very special girls.
  17. Zoiboy there was no mention of "emergency" in the cut and paste you provided.
  18. Please do not yell and hit things - all that will do is upset the old girl. Keep the puppy away from her. Use baby gates, crates and leashes. Let the older dog toilet out in the front yard if safe. Do not expect them to be friends. Protect the old girl at all costs, she was there first and did not ask for a puppy to come into her home. All this and more I did with the last pup while my oldest dog was still alive. In fact I started protecting her from around 10 from the bigger dogs.
  19. can't really vote. I had GSD's for many, many years, now I have Greyhounds and that's where I'm staying. So only the two breeds over 30 odds years. And one medium size mutt, not likely to be repeated. ETA there was nothing wrong with Emma, loved her as much as any dog, but I prefer to have a better idea of size as I get older which is a bit  seeing as how I have a large breed.
  20. Tony Valli is indeed still judging, as recently as last weekend.
  21. The greyhounds are owned by Shantiah, I bred the white and blue fawn girl and the other two are half siblings, but they are also all cousins being out of full sisters :D
  22. My pups never go past 3 months on puppy food, after that it is all adult food, so any time now IMO.
  23. all my pedigreed dogs are chipped with their call name only. None with their full registered name which often has no direct connection with the call name cept for one. Really? Then if one of the dogs you had bred escapes or strays and the contact details on the microchip were not up to date there would be no chance at all of you being notified that it had been impounded and you would have no chance to rescue it and save it from a possible PTS. Not every pound or veterinary clinic contacts breed rescue or the state breed club when a purebred is running out of time, but some do, and that extra chance means that the breeder may have a say in where that dog of their breeding is placed next. Even if you just chipped your prefix followed by the call name it would serve the same purpose. I always knew that the prefix could be removed by a future owner, but personally I felt that using the prefix as part of the name when microchipping showed a willingness on the part of that breeder to be responsible for all their breeding if any fell through the cracks and ended up in the pound system. Perhaps it is just something that hasn't occcured to some breeders? Now you have me wondering how many ANKC breeders do not add their prefix to the chip details of their puppies? Owners change the details to what they want not what breeders want. I did ask them all to be put down as 2nd contact, which all did. But it could be anything by now. Just because their prefix is not part of their name does not mean I would not be willing to help, bit of an (wrong) assumption on your part. IME pounds wouldn't know how to track down a prefix or even recognise one. And in my breed they would be more puzzled by a lack of tattoo's then anything else.
