  1. I had no idea English Setters could do agility;learn something every day..
  2. A Golden Retriever or Curly coated Retriever .
  3. A lot of the breeds are on the most dumped list because they happen to be popular breeds that are available in large numbers. Notice a lot of the breeds on the least dumped breeds list are quite rare or harder to find ,hence less in number less dumped. If a breed becomes very popular then breeding will increase from all sources to meet demand;shortly after you will see an increase in the disposal rate of that particular breed.
  4. A work mate of mine brought his dog in to work a few weeks back and she was not the happy dog she normally is wanting pats and attention'' because ''her owner said she was on heat. Now my thought was why doesn't he get her de sexed. But said nothing to him. I wonder if there is any research on the behavior of female dogs during a heat;i don't have time to search right now. General temperament and dog aggression, anxiety, is largely down to Genetics , training and environment.
  5. It is up to the owner if they desex or not and some dogs cope better than others through the heat. Myself i would always desex my dog if not intending to breed because.. A ...Will not have the mess and smell. B...Not have every stray dog for miles trying to get into my property or my dog trying hard to escape. C...Risk of accidental mating as if it did occur i would not terminate due to my personal beliefs. If rescues did not try to rescue or help as many dogs as they can then many more animals would be disposed of in shocking ways. I believe many dogs end up in the pound because the owners chose the wrong breed for their situation or find they are unable to train the dog and can't cope with problem behaviors and do not seek help for whatever reason..
  6. Yeh swap the partner for a compassionate one.. Sending healing vibes your way.
  7. Why not use both names Secret Inky.
  8. I suspect Basenji are actually cats disguised as dogs.A unique breed needing owners who really understand them well. http://www.yourpurebredpuppy.com/reviews/basenjis.html
  9. Smaller size,an Australian Terrier.
  10. Beagles need to be in a dig proof area when you are not home.My Beagle would dig crater sized holes under the fence in minutes to try and escape to the nearby school. Staffordshire Terriers are good climbers and can scale trees 'like my neighbours one'. Both breeds need a fair amount of company to be happy and both would do better with another dog for company if owners are out most of the day.
  11. A Brittany.or a Vizsla. eta.
  12. A sensible post. The poor woman was bitten and i am sure she was frightened and is in pain.I am sure she is not the first dog trainer to be bitten; mistakes accidents can happen to anyone. I watched her shows. She did not want to have dogs put down;there were a couple of dogs i thought it may have been the only option but she worked with the owners to manage and contain their obviously well loved pets so they would never be a danger to anyone. I like her and have one of her books, not that i agree with all her methods but she has helped a lot of people and dogs.
  13. This was the point i tried to make earlier;you explained it better. http://www.gsdcv.org.au/branches
  14. Feeling scared as you say is a behavior and rewarding that fearful behavior gives the message that being scared is ok. Only reward dogs when they are relaxed confident and doing the right thing. I am personally not a fan of constant food rewards.Praise and positive voice / body language speaks volumes to a dog. Sorry Purdie but feeling scared is not a behaviour. Feeling scared is an emotion. Biting someone (triggered by feeling scared) is a behaviour. I use food rewards extensively with my clients' fearful dogs. If used correctly they are extremely powerful - much more so than praise. Ok if that works then great.I guess i must have a more old fashioned outdated approach / understanding of dog training. Cheers..:)

  16. Yes by touching the car or whatever the object the dog is scared of you transfer your familiar scent to the object and also it is like when a dog sniffs around to investigate the surroundings. If two dogs walk around a new yard together; watch the less confidant dog approach the areas the confident dog has already investigated,he is more relaxed there than when he has to go to a corner of the yard on his own where the other dog hasn't been yet. When we got a scratching post for our cat he was scared of it until i ran my hands over it several times to get my scent onto it and then right away he started using it. Can you go walking with another dog as company to boost his confidence. Also get an T shirt or sock of yours and rub it over things that he is most scared to approach at home and when out walking then see if he will follow the scent to the object. ETa Hold off giving treats, you could inadvertently be rewarding him for feeling scared.
  17. Looking forward to seeing more pictures as they grow;Any names yet ? Rotty pups are among the cutest pups ever..
  18. As others have said ;wait at least 12 months and train your pup to be a good dog with lots of outings to meet other dogs and people. A Stafford and Cattle dog would get along fine imo. No reason why you can't find a good Staffordshire breeder now and go on a waiting list for a pup in a year or 2.
  19. Rascal...""Would never let him go '' Keep him. Claudia... "kids favorite '' Keep her. Chloe.."" Can't imagine her not in our lives". Keep her. Re home ..Astro and Hugo .
