Before signing up to any insurance, contact them and make sure you're aware of their policy on dogs with potential unknown history, as well as how the costs increase, or cover may decrease as a dog ages. I wouldn't be without insurance, personally, but it's a personal choice. If you do a search you will get a lot of info.

A Follow On Thread For Those Who Now Have Their Puppy
minimax replied to julesluvscavs's topic in Puppy Chat
My 18 month old pug chases flies, but never gets them. He loooooves bees as they are just like slow moving flies I keep a box of phenergan handy, and make sure the yard is free of the plants and weeds that attract bees. But phenergan is our friend in summer for little Bee-man!!! -
When she finishes teething :p

My pugs are inside in the kitchen and sunroom (which doesn't get any sun), and in summer they get the bathroom as well coz they like the tiles. Baby gates block them off from the rest of the house. They don't get free reign of the house because they would fight over everything and they don't get access to the yard as we're on a corner block and I don't like them being so 'exposed' to people walking past, despite 6 foot fences and padlocks. When we are home they have free reign of the house and yard, and sleep on my bed at night. I have a dog walker that comes 3 times a week during the day and walks them for an hour.

They are in the US. Do they ship to Australia, and what's the shipping price?

When you Google them it looks like they are registered, and have many many many previous reports of the same issues. Some reports say they have "handed in their dogs west registration"

Searching For A Foster Carer In Sydney! :(
minimax replied to dogsforjane's topic in General Dog Discussion
The inner west is very pet friendly in general, but apartments are harder as you have to find a building where the strata allows pets, then hope the owner agrees too. Heaps of places in the inner west that aren't apartments but are similarly priced to apartments. -
sounds like buyers aren't doing their research, and are buying BYB pups from un-health tested/scored parents. And bad stuff happened. And we are meant to be shocked?

Searching For A Foster Carer In Sydney! :(
minimax replied to dogsforjane's topic in General Dog Discussion
I mentioned in my post that unfortunately I dont have any friends and family who can take care of her. My family and I live together so we are all stuck in the same sticky situation... I am looking for an apartment in the inner west Sydney. I have called and asked most of the large real estate agents and they have told me that nothing pet friendly is available for rent. It is only permitted if you own the apartment... They told me that the law was changing to allow pets "soon" but cannot confirm a date... so it could be one year or two years down the track. It an apartment it depends on the strata, and then the owner. But I guess mostly it depends on your priorities if you want to keep the dog and look in other areas that might not be your first choice, or other property types (ie: not apartments) that would allow you to keep her or not. But I know plenty of people with pets in apartments. I used to have my dog in a rented apartment. -

What area are you looking for an apartment? There are bucketloads that are pet friendly these days, you just have to know where to look and not always go by the "pet friendly" status on domain/website ads, but actually approach real estate agents directly. -
Good idea, well move it in tonight. unfortunately wearing hime out doesn't seem to work, he gets a walk and a run through all his tricks an then about half an hour to chill before he foes to bed. but even if he is dozing on the floor he will wake right up and start fighting as soon as we put him to bed. Sounds like that half hour is the time to put him to bed to chill, especially if he's falling asleep on the floor.

How random, I was just looking at the APPA winner and the name Darren Jew looked really familiar ... he sent me a bunch of photos once he took of my dragon boat crew racing in Sydney  I had/have no idea who he was, he might have been at the event with someone I was paddling with coz it was random, but now it makes sense why the photos were so awesome

Wow. Does there ever come a point where photography crosses the line into digital art? I mean, those started out at photos ... many many many lightroom edits ago

I use large ceramic bowls as they are too heavy for my guys to play with, but I have pugs, not large dogs. They still manage to get IN the bowls though, or dig out all the water so there are several scattered throughout the house and outside

Of course your only selling to approved homes ... if you didn't approve of the home you wouldn't be selling the pup. You're just not stating it, because it's a bizzare thing to write that perpetuates the exclusivity of pedigree dogs.
-
This is EXACTLY the attitude that drives sincere, but naive buyers to pet shop sellers and disreputable puppy-mill sellers who don't give a shit. The puppy buyer shouldn't face an arbitrary, judgmental, unwritten set of norms...and be cast out as a prospective puppy buyer because they don't fit some unspecified profile. All sincere inquiries desreve4 at least a reply, allowing for clarification if some word raises a red flag. No wonder pedigree breeders have gotten a reputation as snobs in some circles! +1 I hope you set out these expectations somewhere so people know what they have to do, otherwise you're setting people up to fail.

Yes, the leaflet says to start one month prior to first expected exposure to ticks.

Backpack With A Black Dog Picture
minimax replied to Dory the Doted One's topic in General Dog Discussion
I just figured if they were doing an event for mens depression, and the blackdog institute is a depression/bipolar institute, it might be appropriate -
A little part of me died when I realized there was an actual thing called "Weimadoodle" You could make yourself feel better by realising there is no such thing, and it's actually just a crossbred?

Dogs Seized From No Kill Shelter

I think it's funny that even Clive Palmers party got more votes than he did Actually, there were more informal votes than there were votes for Aldridge -
You can apply it as soon as you like AFTER a bath as long as pup is completely dry. DO NOT shampoo for 48 hours after you apply you spot on tick /flea treatment :) I had read/heard that you should wait 2-3 days so the body oils have a chance to distribute over the dog & so distribute the product. When going to Newcastle last year with our dogs we were told to apply Advantix twice, 2 weeks apart, if we weren't already using it for ticks. Interesting luvsdogs. I have never heard that you should wait after bathing your dog to apply Advantix. I pretty much always apply it the same day. At least once a month anyway as I wash my guys every 3 weeks. When you say you were told to apply it twice, 2 weeks apart you mean every fortnight. Yes ?? If so that is correct to help with Tick protection. Still go over your dogs at least daily to check for them. Yeh, Advantix is applied every two weeks for tick protection, as standard. So those instructions weren't anything new. The leaflet in the box is a bit vague when it comes to application after washing etc That's all it says in regards to water, nothing about waiting periods before or after. (bolding mine, because I'm not sure most people realise soap washes it off)

A few weeks ago I took the pugs down to Callala Beach, at Jervis Bay and we stayed here: http://www.stayz.com.au/accommodation/nsw/south-coast/jervis-bay/7287 It's a 3 bedroom pet friendly house within walking distance from the beach, where dogs are allowed in the house (just not on the furniture or beds). The backyard is fenced, but some of the fences are very low (waist height), the downstairs floors are all lino so easy to sweep up any sand tracked in from the beach, and there was a bottle of champagne in the fridge on arrival. We'll be going back for sure, it was just perfect.

What Breeds Are Most Common In Your Area?
minimax replied to kelpiecuddles's topic in General Dog Discussion
Pugs are very common where I am, however most of them are BYB or from one or two well known registered puppy farms when they all have noses and long legs. I just assume pugs are "trendy" at the moment and think nothing of it, but I had to go to Newcastle on Saturday and took my two with me. It was like the people up there had never seen pugs before - and I lost count of how many people said "I didn't know pugs came in black" Sooooo many people stopped us in the street, or came up to as while we were having brekky at an outside table of a cafe to talk to them and say hi to them and talk to us about them, it was really weird. Of course they loved it
