Vets should take them if they can but aren't obliged to unless they've applied to be a legal holding point (can't remember what the name is exactly). NSW Rule is the animal must get to a ranger or pound in 24 hrs and if the vet won't help then it's the finder's responsibility. So the advice you got, to take it back to where you found it is simply idiotic and dangerous. After hours some pounds have holding pens, if they are locked, the police have a key and can put a stray in to keep it safe until opening hours. p.s. TD, my area borders on two pounds. If they run one way it's City of Sydney who send them to the Shire, if they run the other way it's SDCH. So you have to check both. x

Sabbath as far as I know they are highly mobile, hard to catch. Back paddocks, empty sheds or abandoned warehouses (could be urban myth but that's what people think they're using in Sydney). They pick up and move. It's too late to pursue them after the dogs are being stolen. This is an assumption, but apart from sourcing dogs and running bets you'd really not have to be a mastermind. Dogs can be hidden in plain sight, easy to move around and in the event you get caught with a perfectly alive unharmed (yet) stolen one it's a slap on the wrist.

Unless the owner is found and makes a police report about theft it will be hard to get the police to take action AFAIK. Has anyone found they've had a different experience?

It's OK oakaway, it might sound scary but there is no law so whatever was said is just...ideas.... if you can find the wording somewhere I'd be very interested to read it. Look more closely at the NSW Companion Animal Taskforce, that's something to be taken very seriously if you're a breeder.

Well that means you are against all the States Controlling Bodies that have legally Registered Pure Bred Breeders because Oscars Law does not differentiate between them and Puppy Farmers. You can't support both. You can't know who it differentiates between because there is no law and no draft. You may have seen a supporter spout off about all breeders but ask OL themselves.

Very strongly. You could be right about the unofficial policies but we're never going to know unless a 'law' is drafted. And I still want to see that happen because I do like the idea in principle (yep I know that's a repeat). At one time all supporters were asked to remove the Wantsoscarslaw from their FB middle names because some were going off like pork chops. I realise you need a huge community base to get some momentum but like with Moorook atm, it can get very muddy and emotional when everyone jumps in shouting.

Fuzzy82, yes I have seen the statement many times from the OL camp re getting a dog from either responsible rescue or an ethical breeder. Of course this minor detail is seemingly unknown to some supporters because they haven't bothered reading what's in front of them. :laugh:

Sares I think the point is that the proposed law hasn't actually been put in print, as you would when presenting something to..for example the senate....that kind of wording. I've met Deb and Oscar and read all I could find. But as others have said, there isn't much and was not in a format you can take to govt. And I'll put my hand up as liking the idea in principle. Currently though, there are some really scary lunatics rabidly supporting an idea they cannot possibly explain in more than 4 words. Seriously, plotting to jump over a fence at night to steal a dog because that's what you do to save them. Dog just happens to be in someone's yard, and isn't being bred from either but it's going to get saved anyway. So really I guess like so many other animal welfare issues it was the hysteria that made me back off and mind my own business. I wish them luck.

not sure. I have a dear friend whose dog had a collection of things happening, main one being seizures and at first they were worried it was encephalitis. Turned out she stabilised and is only needing phenomav now. In the end she is doing fine on the meds but it was still a bit of a mystery.

Sorry we have a couple of epileptics in care. They do ok on medication but it's very worrying when it first begins. Did you look up focal seizure or idiopathic head bob seizure? **Be careful with google though, it doesn't do much except make you worry more. :) Maybe wait until he is stable and the vet has had a good look at everything. Anne, would antibiotics be to rule out a bacterial infection like encephalitis?

Look into Freedom of Information but you'd have to have a specific request (like branch, date, ID number) and I don't know if certain information is deemed exempt, I'm not completely familiar with the Act or what the RS is allowed to keep private.

That whole post is so contradictory. May seem surprising but not every rescuer is on a power trip or making up rubbish. Some are trying to be helpful. When a dog lives in my house it is my dog and I do know it better than anyone. It's not just some random animal passing through. It's a massive rescue fail to place a dog in just any home when you know it's not the right fit. I should be doing the best for both my dog and someone else's family. OP. Every dog is different. You need a good matching process that's all. If you choose rescue don't be in a hurry, take your time, choose one who knows their dogs. With a breed like a Jack Russell I'd go for breed specific but that's just me. They are a funny little terrier. :)

Oldies are the best. Seeing them come good and be happy little souls is just priceless. Unfortunately the numbers are overwhelming. I am sad to say, far too many lately are rescued and 'rehomed' poorly because they are old and expensive to vetwork.

Do you mean what happens when the ID (chip) doesn't match the paperwork? I'd say you'll need to get a notarised stat dec from your vet re the two chips and match it all up with existing paperwork. Whether or not the second chip will be rejected again I'm not sure.

Thanks Anna - unfortunately Gracie is just one of many large bills lately (like most groups around the area who are also struggling to keep up with extra costs) - so we are actually planning a raffle for Cooper - the boy we had in care that got bitten by a brown snake - had his own thread a while back - he had a bad skin condition and then got bitten by a snake .....unfortunately that bill is still largely outstanding and has been on hold while I have attended to more urgent matters but he is now also on the radar for fundraising too. We figured people would like to buy a raffle ticket in a success story rather than one that didn't make it so we are running a future raffle for Cooper and poster appeal for Gracie. I'm so sorry. It sucks to have vet bills hanging over your head.

I will send the feedback form in but as I'm not a breeder I want to change the additional comments. Does anyone have any ideas on what can be included? The feedback questions are relevant to all pet owners, not just DogsNSW members. Add what you feel is relevant, to the "further comments" they have to process all submissions. And if you own a dog from a registered breeder, if you own an entire dog, if you're on a low fixed income, if you own a dog who could fall under the eyeball of BSL fans or if you have rescued a BYB or puppy farm survivor you'd be well within your rights to consider your comments particularly relevant to certain questions.

What do people use instead? We have two carers in tick prone areas. And if it comes down to it I'd rather have a dog rushed to the vet with a bad reaction than for a 50/50 chance at surviving a tick. BTW all smalls and no reactions yet.
