I've left my dog in the car. It was about fifteen minutes and cold. Still the weather was purely luck. People lead busy lives, one thing leads to another and you forget things! It wasn't my finest moment. I agree that it's awful and my heart breaks thinking about the suffering that dog would have endured, but it was an accident through irresponsibility, the driver didn't beat the dog to death iykwim.

Canberra & Surround Dolers - Update First Post
Clyde replied to Staffyluv's topic in General Dog Discussion
I had one a few years ago and really cherish the photos from it. I know she shoots dogs more but she captured some stunning shots of my then 5yr old daughter. -
What a horrible accident

That poor little dog And the daughter will never get over witnessing it.

Why do people have a "right" to someone's front door? Front yards are still private property, I don't think anyone has a right to it except the property occupants. I think it's actually the law. That a person must be able to get to your front door without being threatened by a dog. It rings a bell anyway. I padlock my front gate when Im out so that people cant set foot in my front garden as I have a dog in there.

After Many Years, I've Kicked The Westies Off My Bed...
Clyde replied to westiemum's topic in General Dog Discussion
I agree. My Stafford is a bit of an anxious dog. If she was upset about something she pee'd on the lounge, my bed or the living room rug a few times. She is now only allowed up on the furniture by invitation only. I felt mean at first, started this a year or so ago, but she has adjusted. -
I dont agree with this. It can be a very real problem for dogs of all ages. I think a good start would be contacting Sas from Great Dane Rescue. NSW Good luck, and Welcome to the forums :)

That is exactly how I feel. My kids are grown men now and don't need me anymore. I don't think most kids ever stop needing their mum no matter what age I would leave early. I get torn up just at the thought, but if it came down to my life, I would leave the pets if I was majorly risking my own life to save them. I'm a single parent so that comes first.
-
But who can you really call when your fellow neighbours would all be in the same boat? I could never ask my neighbours when they have their own responsibilities to think about, that , to me, would be unfair. The first time I cancelled plans, stayed at home and had someone come and get my daughter so my main priority was out of the way, the second I cut my holiday short and came home. The dogs wouldnt let anyone on the property anyway.

I'll have to give it some serious consideration. I dont have a tow bar atm and nowhere to put a trailer/float as the driveway is so tight. I also cant drive a trailer I had a mobile grooming business for a while but couldnt manage the trailer, trashed both car and trailer so gave it up. I think it's my only option though. The same local GSD breeder offered me her dog trailer on the day that we were all concerned which was really sweet of her, but alas no use without a tow bar. She then came back and offered me her ute with a tow bar. But you cant leave someone else short in these scenarios. I guess like most of us, I dont like leaving my pets somewhere where I am not too. You like to know they're with you and safe, but its not always practical.

They are all working (but also all pets). Three guard chooks, ducks and me, one guards sheep and chooks. None are car friendly, and even getting them in to the car is very challenging. Thankfully the giant one is the most social but the other three would be more 'challenging'. Re the stock, if time I would squeeze the ducks and some chooks in to the car. Re the sheep Ive been told just to open all the gates within the property to give them the best chance. I was initially thinking of opening all gates for the sheep, even off the property but someone pointed out they would then present a danger to motorists which totally makes sense. I guess it would just be nice to be able to take the Maremmas somewhere local first and then come back for the rest. Three of the males arent crash hot with each other and having all of them plus the others and my daughter in the car is dangerous in itself. Im feeling frustrated that there is nowhere to take them but cant think of anywhere myself so I guess I can see councils point. If the Maremmas wont get in the car in a hurried, last minute emergency some would just have to be left as I cant risk my daughters safety. Which is why I would like to come up with something so I can be more organised and evacuate early.

I have crates for the 2 house dogs and 3 cats but crates for one giant dog and 3 large dogs just wouldn't all fit in my car. Obviously it would be nice to be able to do a couple of trips but it's not always feasible if no time to get out etc. None of the Maremmas are crate trained which I suppose wouldnt be an issue short term and they'd just have to get over it, but crates for all wouldn't fit in the car. I guess I was hoping that the local shelter would have opened its doors but they were full.

I filled it out. My biggest concern is what to do with all of my dogs. A couple aren't great with people and they all cant run together. So, I cant really take them to a regular evacuation point, if it's hot they cant be left in the car so Im not sure what options I am left with. The local shelter couldnt take them, nor could any local vets. When we had the scare a couple of weeks back, it was very worrying. A lovely, local GSD breeder phoned to offer me space in her runs but she is near me and was also in a 'danger' zone. If anyone has ideas, I would love to hear them as I have to sort something out.

His groomer will LOVE you! He is very cute. I love Poodles. When bred/raised correctly they are little balls of spunk. I love his name too

What a lovely, happy ending for this boy. He certainly looks to have something special about him. Well done

Two of my dogs hate peeing in the rain, it's normal. If we have a lot of wet weather I just put an old towel down on the outside doorstep for them to pee on and throw it out after. Mine are adults though, it might set up a pattern for a pup.

I guess in a good way the decision was made for you. Sometimes in these situations (where I cant make up my mind) I almost feel relieved when the final decision is taken out of my hands. Well done to you anyway for wanting to help someone. She sounds like a very caring person and just wanting the best for her dog. Glad your boy has picked up too. Funny how sometimes a hair cut can give a dog a real lift. I guess like us!

I have worked in salons alongside very experienced groomers and some of their handling skills were truly shocking. I walked out on a job once because of the way the groomer was handling a dog.
-
Yes, a few reasons that I can think of right now. One is the dryer lifts out a lot of dead coat The dryer, along with slickers, allows the groomer to straighten the coat section by section in order to get a correct cut. You cant cut hair to a standard unless it's straight. Not drying a dog properly can cause hot spots. It also gives the dogs a fluffy look which owners love and cannot achieve at home with just a towel dry. Owners love seeing their dogs all fluffed and puffed. There might be more but that's just what Ive got at the moment.

Meet And Greet Your Chosen Rescue Pup, What's A Fair Distance To H
Clyde replied to gwp4me's topic in General Dog Discussion
I think a reasonable distance is whatever you see as reasonable! I had a DOL'er do a round trip from QLD to Sydney to meet a rescue dog I had. Personally, I would only travel an hour or so. I dont think you should expect a carer to travel anywhere, if they do it is only through the goodness of their heart rather than an obligation. Good luck!:) -
I tend to agree. I am not concvinced it will make one bit of difference. You have sloppy licensed tradies etc, there are sloppy individuals in every profession. It's a really unfortunate incident and I feel awful for the owner Ive not ever cage dried, I don't like it. I had call yesterday from a new client. She was ringing to sus me out as her groomer was retiring. She really put me through the wringer  All sorts of questions about my practices. Ive not ever had such a 3rd degree before - but really this is what everyone should be doing.

I gave a dog mild burn on his boy bits just last week. It was only slightly noticeable, but it was easy enough to do as the dog had just so many matts there and the skin is so delicate. It is easier to do than you think and then if the dog licks at it it can really flare up. Of course, I told the owner and said if she was alarmed that I would cover the vet bill. She phoned me a few days later to tell me it had gone. I wouldnt rubbish a groomer for that when the dog was in such awful condition to start with. Grooming is harder than people think! Ive sliced open a dogs tail before (tail was previously broken and crooked at the tip but was a ball of matts so when I was slicing open the matts I didnt realise the tail went the wrong way and accidentally sliced it). Ive also nicked a Schnauzers ear and there has been the odd ball rash from matts. This in about 15yrs - it happens. But now, I refuse to dematt ANYTHING. Everything comes off. If they dont like it they can come and collect their dog.

I have read good things about Wayrod on this forum. Send them a pm, whoever has dealt with them always says they are most helpful. Good luck

Hottest Day In Sydney Today On Record 45.8 Degrees!
Clyde replied to labadore's topic in General Dog Discussion
One of my Maremmas ate a pretty bird the other day. Those blue and red ones. I wondered how he caught it, but now think perhaps it was already dead or weak from the heat. It's the second one I've caught him eating. -
