Hopefully we can make some of the meets next year, we have been doing our best on getting Oscar to calm down, so even if he stays on lead. I haven't been for a long time and there are a lot of Spitz Breed dogs now, how do they play? Do they enjoy a bit of rough play, as Oscar definitely does.

The Sibes definitely enjoy rough play, or at least Akira does - she's the first to body slam, and when we're finally back at meets she'll be wanting someone to play rough with because we'll be keeping her from being too rough with Halo in case she accidentally hurts her. The Lappies are a little more laid back, depends on the dog whether they can handle rough play or not. Most of the lappies I've met have been able to handle Akira.

I know its not meet related, but as this gathers adelaide peeps attention....:) Does anyone know anywhere in the next month or so that is doing a special cheap microchipping day? I know sometimes the council, petstock, awl etc do them.

Thanks!

One day I'll get to a meet, I just have such a dodgy car I'm paranoid I'll break down, lol.

Esky love love loves to rough and tumble.

I usually have to put her on leash when she gets too much for the others.

It would be good for her to have a few more full on dogs to play with

She grew up playing with my inlaws boxer, boxer x and bitza .

So she loves rough

  • 3 weeks later...

I would like to say something, but before I do I want to reiterate the fact I am not in anyway attacking any individual who comes to the meet. This is a generalised statement.

Some of you who came on Sunday are probably aware that there was a bit of a fight between two dogs. One of the dogs being one of mine. This fight was over a tennis ball someone bought along and was throwing for a dog. Both the dogs who went for it are extremely ball orientated and are known resource guard them. It is not the first fight these two dogs have been in over a tennis ball and it was quite lucky niether dog was injured either time.

I removed the offending ball from the sight of all the dogs but less than 5 minutes after the fight another ball was being thrown. And a little while after that someone bought out a squeaky ball.

Can people please refrain from bringing toys like tennis balls or squeaky toys to the meets. They cause more grief than good with so many dogs running together. We've had fights break out over nothing before, we do not need to add elements such as prey objects to highten the likelihood of fights.

You may know that your dog is fine with balls or squeakers and doesn't resource guard BUT not everyone else's are and you do not know which ones are ok and which ones aren't. So please respect this and leave balls and squeaky toys at home when you come to the DOL meet.

Ravyk as you already pointed out incidents occur at those type of events without anything necessarily triggering it so I am not really sure how requesting people to leave toys at home will necessarily solve anything. I guess its a risk you take when you attend functions with a lot of dogs in that sort of environment and why some people won't attend.

If its not going to happen over a toy then there is still the likelihood of resource guarding over food/people etc. I guess it comes down to the fact you make a choice about the type of environment you wish to put your dog in and if your not happy with it then you make a decision to not attend.

My youngster is a resource guarder so I opt not to put her into those types of environments.

It will solve the issue of having 2-12 dogs going after one ball/toy and causing possible fights over who ends up with the ball. These items trigger a much higher likelihood of fights in a group of dogs as large as we get at the dog meets because they are often seen as prey items.

I take my dogs to the DOL meets to socialise them with other dogs and to meet new people. Yes the occasional tiff does happen when two dogs aren't taking to each other but the fights over balls and other toys have been a lot more serious.

Just because a dog resource guards balls/toys does not mean they will resource guard people or food.

If people want to take their dog to play fetch at a park that is fine, just please don't chose the dog meet to do it.

But if everyone else sees differently to what I am seeing, I'll just refrain from coming along to the meets.

No need to get defensive I wasn't there - all I was suggesting is that you get issues when you have large groups of strange dogs meeting at the one venue. I am sure you have read the number of threads on here that get started in relation to dog parks and fights or issues occurring.

I agree that balls can stir up problems but I was just pointing out that by eliminating those you weren't necessarily eliminating all possible potential for fights.

It also sounds as though the number of people now attending the meets might have outgrown the space available at the venue. Maybe it might be worth looking for another venue which is better suited to a larger number of dogs . Especially if you tend to find there are other people there and so having to fence off half of the area. I can imagine it getting quite crammed if you have lots of dogs all wanting to run around and try and play.
