jazawayaya Posted June 15, 2010 Share Posted June 15, 2010 Sorry guys not sure where to post this... I was wondering if anyone could tell me of small dogs that are not known for barking? I understand each is different and it is all about training and socialisation but I am just wondering in general if there are smaller dogs that are known to be quiet.. once our noisy little rescue calms down and we get him out of his barking habit we are looking at intoducing him to a friend... I have 2 small breed dogs (Cav x and Japanese Spitz) and they only bark when there is a reason to bark (eg, unfamiliar noise) or when they are playing. Other from that, they are pretty quiet. aussielover Posted June 15, 2010 Share Posted June 15, 2010 To be honest, if you're going to leave a dog in the backyard all day with no entertainment, it is going to bark, no matter what breed. Since you already have a dog, it is possible the two will entertain each other. Conversly, the older dog that already barks may teach the younger dog to bark as well so you will have twice the noise. I'm sure you've already thought about these things though, my personal suggestion would also be a Cavvy, most of the ones I know are very quiet dogs that rarely bark, even in boarding kennel situations. alpha bet Posted June 15, 2010 Share Posted June 15, 2010 I have a boarding kennel so I get used to knowing which dogs I have to watch as far as barking as well as many other issues. One smaller breed that never seems to be a problem - the little corgi - had quite a few stay with me over the years and they always seem to be quiet dogs who relax into the system and get on very well with other dogs. Shouldn't imagine they tolerate the cold too well though, so indoor pampered pet Maybe ask some of the breeders about them in general, if you like them. They may not bark much but they snore real bad and loud lol My pug barks like it's going out of fashion mind you she's only 10 weeks old and insists on trying to kill everything. percyk Posted June 15, 2010 Share Posted June 15, 2010 small dogs tend to be noisy so i guess if i lived in a townhouse id get an iggy sighthounds dont make good watchdogs in general...i guess theyre independent nature kinda speaks to the world : take the jewels take the cash Mr Burglar but just dont take the sofa! i have seen de-barked iggies so there must be the odd one who is a barker and their barking can be shrill but usually it is because theyre being picked on or theyre cold and want to come in so go a sighthound...a small whippet or an italian Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
