TWO men have been taken to hospital and a boy was injured after being attacked by two dogs in a suburban Melbourne street.

One of the men suffered up to 20 bite wounds in an attack by a pit bull and a Staffordshire cross, while the other man was bitten as he tried to protect his family from the dogs.

Ambulance Victoria said the family of four were walking down Morris Road, Hoppers Crossing, to get some dinner about 6.30pm yesterday, when the two dogs attacked.

Paramedic Kylie McNeilage said the 38-year-old father was injured when the dogs charged at him and his wife, eight-year-old son and three-year-old daughter.

"He tried to protect his children using his arm and suffered bites to his arm and hand, including one where the dog latched on for about 20 seconds," Ms McNeilage said in a statement.

The man's eight-year-old son was also injured, before his mother took him and his sister into a driveway.

"The eight-year-old boy suffered a small wound to his cheek and eyebrow, before he ran into a nearby driveway with his mother and sister to escape the dogs."

A 23-year-old man was then also attacked on the same street by the dogs who bit him up to 20 times, inflicting significant injuries to his left arm.

Ms McNeilage said the man was distressed and had trouble breathing after the attack.

Paramedics treated him before taking him to Royal Melbourne Hospital in a stable condition.

The 38-year-old father was also treated at the scene before being taken to Sunshine Hospital in a stable condition.

A Wyndham Council spokesperson said it was unclear what would happen to the dogs which the council had seized.

The owner of the dogs was helping the council with their inquiries.

"The incident may result in charges being laid against the owner."

Poor family. Must have been terrifying for them to have those dogs run up and just start attacking. Irresponsible owner. Hope the owner gets charged!

On another note I hope that these dogs have been properly identified and that they truly were a "pitbull" and Stafford X otherwise its just another low blow for breeds which are already struggling.

The should be no "maybe charges laid against the owner" it should be definately there will be charges laid against the owner.

Those poor people that would have terrifying. One very brave dad and quick thinking mum and 8yo.

I too hope the identification is correct.

The poor family have faced a terrible situation that no one should ever have to go through. Those terrified children will probably have fears their entire lives.

When will they license pet ownership? When will they stop the puppy farms and pet stores handing over animals to just anyone?

This is the cause of the problem. The wrong people owning the wrong animal. Absolutely zero accountability to anyone but themselves.

Now the calls will ring afresh to ban "dangerous" dogs. I had my face mauled by a little mixed breed terrier as a boy. I still have the scars on my lower lip and forehead.

IMO it doesn't matter what breed it is, its the owners responsibility to create a stable animal in ALL situations.

Maybe a psych evaluation for anyone who wishes to own a "dangerous" breed of dog, to prove you have the required knowledge to own such a breed.

Not walk into some place and purchase a penitential killing machine, just because you like the look of it.

But they will most likely punish us all for the mistakes of the few ....

Victorian Councils rarely charge owners if they can avoid the work. They'll scare the owners into a "plea bargain" where they avoid court if they offer up their dogs to be killed. With the money they save they can just go replace the dogs and repeat the whole cycle.

Latest i have seen on this is the dogs look nothing like an APBT or AmstaffX as reported. Waiting to see proof but the report i heard from a bystander who knows their dogs reports them as a big mastiff x type dog. Could be any mix .

It makes no difference what breed these dogs are. The thing is, these dogs ARE dangerous and should be dealt with accordingly courteousy of the owner. These poor children could have been killed had it not been for the absolute bravery of their father. In an interview with Neil Mitchell this morning, he said that one of the dogs was hanging off his chest. They meant business. One of them, according to the father was holding him down while the other was mauling him. Great teamwork! Whether it is the fault of the dogs or the owner, these dogs should be put down.

This is horrible. I can relate to how they feel as I was attacked by a labrador when I was 11. It does affect you for life. I still have little panic attacks if I come across stray dogs without owners. My first instinct is to run which is the worst thing I could do. Horrible that the men were injured, but I'm glad that they were able to protect the 3 and 8 year old children.

How did they stop the dogs attacking in the end?

Go back to post No. 6 and it states that Channel 9 stated American Staffy and the owner stated Pitbull.

This is so awful. ;) My OH and I often discuss the need for a minimum level of education on dog behaviour and management for potential pet owners. In our opinion, it should be a non-negotiable certificate required to purchase any pet.

The Dad was interviewed on 3AW earlier today. Looks like he has ligament damage and has to have an operation. Their house was flooded recently with all the rain. What a terrible time they have had. Poor bloke won't be able to return to work for a while. Thank goodness he was there to protect his kids.

He mentioned the breed of the dogs and made a point that he knew dogs of the same breeds that were great dogs and that it isn't about the breed but it is about the way they are raised and socialised (something to that effect).
