The Importance Of A Kennel's Name

I played with google translator and picked words that made me think of the breed or key words from the standard. Mostly I looked up gaelic words but tried some other languages as well. The versatility of the border collie is important to me and I have a background in obedience, agility and herding and I hope to always maintain the versatility of the breed. So I typed in versatile and got Ildanach which is gaelic for versatile, master of all, skilled at many. It was my first choice and my first litter has just been registered using it :)

Keshwar is the middle name of the Afghan woman Meena Kamal, who founded RAWA

Meena

Meena was the founding leader of RAWA (Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan), an organization that captured people's attention with their highly publicized criticism of the Taliban's mistreatment of Afghan women. Meena also founded a bilingual magazine (Payam-e Zan) which publishes articles on different political and social matters affecting Afghan women. RAWA claims that she was killed on February 4,1987 by KHAD agents working with Hekmatyar's group, Hezb-e Islami. RAWA wishes to establish a secular government in Afghanistan.

Allerzeit = "All Time" in German

Deliberately chosen to have a connection to my parents prefix of Allerhochst, (roughly translating to "All Highest" in German)

The highly non-technical result of scouring a German to English dictionary, many years ago, to try and come up with a prefix beginning with Aller

Tragically we both are Star Trek fans laugh.gif if you reverse Capt James Tiberis Kirk's name, you will get our prefix..........Kerkjamestee biggrin.gif

Scottish friends of mine with sheppies have the prefix Tapferherz which translates german to "Braveheart" and yes, they are directly related to "the" Braveheart, William Wallace thumbsup1.gif

Mine was not my first choice either, but the "Ry" was in honour of my mentor who started me in the breed (Rymiska) and Rysup was just one of the choices we put on the list! It's grown on me over the years.

Ours was a combination of things. Firstly we choose to use aboriginal words as our breed is Australian developed. Also our first of the breed was a bit of a maniac. Still is at 15 years of age so using the old boy as inspiration and Aboriginal words we came up with Yarracully

Yarra in some aboriginal dialects is "companion"

Cully means mad or crazy. So we have crazy companion. Should be CullyYarra but I prefer it the other way. We were lucky it was first choice as a prefix and we got it. Mind you I did do a bit of searching on the internet for it and nothing came up so I was fairly confident of getting it.

Ours is a combination of our names Paul and Michelle, we thought it sounded cool and only sent that one off, with the thought of oh well if they knock it back, they knock it back. Luckily for us it was excepted!

Anything with the world Blue or Staff in it, as there is a heaps of them! - examples BluStaff, MicksStaff etc

   Me too. Absolutely HATE both with a passion.

I can't transfer my prefix to the ANKC, it's already taken even though it was registered in NZ in 1979 and they won't accept anything vaguely similar (despite there being prefixes all over Australia which are only one letter different AND my prefix is no longer being used here and wasn't even in the same group let alone breed :( )

Went through lots and lots of lists with random words on it for about a year before deciding on the new one. Doesn't mean anything, isn't anything to do with past dogs or the breed, just like the sound of it.

I have a bitch called Sway and it was in honor of her, I didn't think the prefix NawtyNawts was a good one.

My pet hate with prefixes

Anything with the world Blue or Staff in it, as there is a heaps of them! - examples BluStaff, MicksStaff etc

And with a breed name in it - XXXXDane - XXXXDane Great Danes doesn't really flow

Not to mention when they change breeds and keep the same prefix.

If I change breeds or branch into a different breed I'm likely to change my prefix.

My prefix came from a name someone called me on DOL chat a long time ago.

We picked a series of Russian names that we liked the meaning of or story behind. We got our third choice I think.

Alyosha is a Russian name, a male form of Alexey. There is a massive statue at Murmansk in honour of a WWII soldier "Alyosha". The story goes that he travelled home from battle across the ravaged lands and was so struck with the devastation brought upon the common people that he became a spokesperson and campaigner for recognition of their suffering and hardship.

A little annoying that some weird girl has recently used the name as her Eurovision name and is now a minor Euro celebrity. Even stranger as it's a boy's name...

Anyway, this is the Alyosha statue, overlooking Murmansk. It commemorates all Russian soldiers from WWII. It's customary apparently for newlyweds to drink a bottle of champers at it's base for good luck.

When I was cuddling my puppy & thinking of names I thought how her coat was so luxurious & almost chose Luxibaby but thought it didn't quite roll off the tongue so got to plush, then lush so Lushbaby was the name. As it was the early 90's the internet was not so popular or used as much but now its used quite a lot on the porn sites. This never entered my head.

It is also the prefix for my cats. Easier having the same one.

I almost did cat boarding a few years ago & ran a list of cattery names past friends & family

They all  at Pussies on the Parade. Never realised how that one would be thought of.

( @ Pussies On The Parade...)

I was trying to think of a way of including my sons' names in the prefix... and realised that with the first initial of my name included, I had N R G (energy).

Which quite suited our breed - Pomeranians - so I went for a "contemporary" feel and came up with several, including eNRGeez... I think this was my third combo of the letters, but I am quite happy with it.

Hope you get your choice, it is a bit of an anxious time waiting, isn't it!

Espinay - Chamberlains to the Kings of France at the time when the Pyrenean was a favoured court dog. Also roughly translates to 'spine of the mountain'. A good livestock guardian is the backbone of mountain life.

I haven't yet applied for a prefix, but think I probably will as I think that is a direction I'd like to take. But I will be getting as many ideas as possible from here. I already have come up with one that to be honest my heart is set on, but the brains of DOL often come up with many good ideas - at the moment maybe better than mine!!!

But the one I'm thinking of comes from my dogs names and my nicknames.

When I was first trying to think of something for my Kennel name I wanted to have wild in it somewhere as both my girls registed names have wild in them. In the end I though it would look like my dogs were wild and I decided against it.

After looking up all sorts of Finnish words related to magic and mythology I fell in love with Lumottu, which means Enchanted. I am glad they did not go past my first choice.

Ive had two. I had to come up with a new one when my first marriage broke up and ex kept the kennel name so when I chose the second Im not sure I was at my best.

My first bitch's name was Sally and her first pup was a male which did really well in the ring - when the marriage broke up I kept him [he was 15] and ex took all of my other dogs so I named my prefix Sallson - for son of sally and started again.
