  1. This is Harry. He's 12 yo and has been with us for 10 and half years. He is suffering from a compressed disc in his neck, but otherwise is healthy. He is the sweetest boy and a clown. This is Whitney. She is 10 and a half, and has been with us for 6 years. She is an anxious thing (triggered by noises) and is getting acupuncture and is on meds for it. She also has DCM and atrial fibrillation. For a girl with such issues, she is very playful and the biggest love bug. She is forever looking for a pat or cuddle. Love all the pics. DOL certainly has magnificent looking dogs
  2. We have had success with acupuncture with our anxious great dane Whitney. It has helped her to be a much happier girl. She is also on meds, but the acupuncture adds another level. We are lucky that at our vet surgery one of the vets studied it, passed, and now does consults. I really recommend looking into it, although, it's not guaranteed to work, certainly helped us.
  3. Wow, I just heard that Greyhound racing will be shut down in NSW on the ABC news! Effective July 2017.
  4. Oh no! We have been very lucky in that we can leave biscuits on the coffee table, and the dogs NEVER touch them, until Saturday night. I was in the loo and could hear a scuffling in the lounge room. I had just got some chicken fillets out of the freezer to defrost and imagined a feast being had! When I emerged from the bathroom, Whitney was on her bed chewing a pack of biscuits. She had taken them off the coffee table and chewed the individually wrapped pack until she got into it. She (nor Harry) has never done this, so I was shocked and didn't know whether to tell her off or laugh! I took the biccies off her (much to her disgust) and told her I was a very disappointed Mum!! At least it was mild compared to your babies!

So sorry, just saw this. Hugs to you all.
  6. You are a treasure "accidentally" bringing him home. Lucky him and you, and absolutely adorable.
  7. I did it, and answered as best I could. I tried to read the question and based my answer on what it actually asked, not what I thought it meant. Hopefully it helps.
  8. When we throw Harry a treat whilst he's on his bed and it doesn't get close enough, he stares at it, willing it to come to him with his mind power. This doesn't work, so one of us has to get up, and give it to him! When Harry goes out for last evening pee, Whitney stays cuddled up in her blanky, but 2 hours after we go to bed, she HAS to go out and do a pee river because she held on too long!!
  9. About 2 years ago I was speaking to one of the girls at he vet's, and she told me I had spent "a bit over $20K" in the 10 years I had been going there. I now spend about $140.00 per week on meds for Whitney (great dane) as she has 2 heart conditions, allergies and anxiety. She also periodically gets acupuncture for the anxiety which keeps it better controlled. Harry (greyhound) is on Previcox for his hip as well. I haven't worked out how much food, worming, etc some to, as I don't think I want to know!! Thank goodness I love them :)
  10. We have greyhound, and he sounds just like what you are looking for. He was race trained, but failed. We've had him for 10.5 years, and he is a clown! He has no prey drive has his green collar (means he doesn't need to be muzzled in public - a requirement in NSW). I am sure not all greyhounds would suit, but he is a treasure, and I'm sure there are others like him. And you being experienced in sight hounds would mean the adjustment wouldn't be too great.
  11. Happy belated birthday to Zeph! Gorgeous doggies
  12. So sorry to see this. Hugs to you all, and enjoy the time you have with her.
  13. I thought about food, but ruled it out. I am also seriously interested in poo since having dogs
  14. Thanks for the replies! Whitney can be a bit timid, but she also roosts her pee and poo sometimes, so seems contradictory? Her food ahs been the same for a long time, some kibble, fresh meat and occasional leftovers. It's seems to be new behaviour, so I don't think food is the cause This was my theory,(cleaning up) but since I've only just noticed it in the last couple of months, and she's lived with us for nearly 6 years, I thought it was strange. She was also breeding bitch retired from a breeder when we took her, and she is very motherly with small dogs, so that could be part of it as well! She has heart problems and is on meds for both of the issues, so maybe she is feeling her age (10 yrs 4 months) and her health is getting worse, she is trying to cover up any evidence of weakness?? We have Harry, a greyhound, as well, but I don't think there are any problems between them (as in one being wary of the other) as neither dog is "top" dog, and they are like two peas in pod, I doubt that she is trying to hide her illness from him. I appreciate everyone's input, thanks!
  15. I have noticed lately that Whitney (great dane) has started to try to cover her poo. She is not kicking dirt onto it, but using her nose to cover it with leaves, grass or dirt. This is a new behaviour, so has me intrigued. Any ideas from the Knowledge Trust?
