  1. Whatever you decide, make sure you get the parvo vac. There is an outbreak on the south coast of NSW which has hit a lot of dogs. They did a mass vaccination last week, and about 1000 - 1500 turned up to get their dogs vaccinated. So many have not been able to recover, and it's sad that for the want of a vaccination, poor dogs have suffered and then died. Please titre test for immunity, or get the vaccination done.
  2. So sad. Sorry for your loss, remember him with love.
  3. So sorry for your loss. Lot's of hugs being sent. Run free Perry, there are a lot of lovely friends at the Rainbow Bridge to keep you company.
  4. It's been a bit over a week, feels like it was months ago in some ways, and like it was yesterday in others. Poor Whitney is a bit out of sorts, so giving her plenty of cuddles. Thank you everyone.
  5. I have used an Adaptil collar and Rescue Remedy on her previously, so they wouldn't be new to her. I guess it's like us, some good days and some bad. Today is the one week anniversary, so I feel a bit sad.
  6. Thanks, I'll try both of those and see if they help :)
  7. Our great dane girl Whitney is sad. We lost Harry last week and she is missing him. When we lost our first dane, Harry took 2 -3 months to become himself again, and I expect it will take Whitney some time as well, but was wondering what others have done to help ease the pain. We are not looking at getting another dog at this stage due to Whitney's health, and she has doggie friends she sees regularly. We are taking her for small walks (heart problems, so marathons aren't an option) giving her lot's of attention, etc. She has taken to spending most of her time in our bedroom, or following me around. She is eating well and gets excited about going our, but other than that, she just lies around looking sad. Is there anything some one has done to help, or is it just a matter of time, like with us?
  8. We said goodbye to the best Harry last night. He'd had issues with his back legs for a while. We had to give him his wings as he deteriorated quickly and his body was giving out. He possibly had a stroke or blood clot which affected him quickly. Run free beautiful boy.
  9. Very cuuuuttte, and congrats on the win!
  10. There are FURminators for sale on Catch of the Day at the moment, if anyone wants one.
  11. Yep i also take lots of towels/blankets going anywhere - was 100% necessary last time as the ground was all muddy! What is "their stuff" for the first aid box though? Is there specific medications/bandages I should have? Whitney (great dane) is on various meds for heart, and Harry (greyhound) has issues with his neck, so their meds come, an array of different bandages, De-Gas, antihistamines, betadine, gauze and saline solution. Also, our vets are wonderful, and I have phoned them when hundreds of kilometers away for advice for pain management when Harry hurt his neck last time we were away. That was invaluable in helping him, and easing my panic!
  12. We make sure we take plenty of towels and blankets. They are good for chilly nights (both dogs sleep with us in the tent or camper), when they get wet (anywhere near water!), if they get sick in the car (only ever happened once). Also, we have a couple of collapsible buckets, as they flat pack well, and take a supply of water from home just in case. And we have added "their" stuff to our first aid box, and that is always with us. Otherwise just their usual food, leads, beds, etc., and long line ropes. Having two older dogs that are experienced campers makes it easy, as they don't even bother to chase the 'roos anymore (but they are contained/tied up, just in case!) Have fun!
  13. Whitney is blue great dane, quite small. I get told she is a weimaraner or a dane cross. I obviously have dane envy, and can't accept the dog I have "is not a pure dane"
  14. We took on a 9 week old great dane whilst both working full-time. We spent a long weekend with her, and then she was on her own. We were able to come home for nearly an hour during the middle of the day to let her run around and play. She was generally pretty good, although had to be kept occupied with chew toys etc. The neighbours told us she spent the mornings snoozing, and the afternoons playing and wandering around more. She did the normal things like playing with the clothes on the clothes line, digging in the garden and rearranging flower beds, but if we had lots of things for her to do, she was better. I think as long as your Mum can come and visit, it should work, but every dog is different. Flash was a confident girl with no separation issues, so that was good for us. We also lived in a country town, so everyone knew the big black dog, so there was no fear of her being taken as everyone looked out for each other, so we were able to let her out in the yard, with access to the house. Good luck. I t can work well! ETA: Starkehre has great advice!
