  1. When i started in dogs over 30 yrs ago the dog there was never this "fear period stuff" .The last 10 years i have heard it used as an excuse or a reason for so many things & its like okay they have reached that age its okay it has happened . I would be seeking better help given her reaction ,i wouldn't be forcing anything until you now what the deal is . I would also inform the clinic of what happened ,personally i have experienced to many vet nurses who have no clue how to deal with dogs or how to approach or simply respect what the owner says or asks for ,granted not everyone knows how to handle there pets but staff should be better prepared to educate owners . It doesn't take long to come & ask the owners to hold there dog in a stand position with control of the head whilst they run the scanner over . As for people who insist on patting on the head that will be a life long battle but education is your key .
  2. or she may have pulled a muscle around her tail area & that has causes weakness & as a result lethargic due to the pain
  3. All dogs deserve respect ,do i think the dog you describe is scary no ,i would say your reaction is more an issue especially to your own dog . My dogs stand in the stance you describe & look ,eye colour can make something look worse than it is . My dogs are friendly & social Tail doing nothing means ditto & the number of people that assume a waggy tail is a happy tail is at risk of something happening . When at the vets i always check before i go in & take the dogs straight to the car before i pay . I have big dogs & am use to the presumed "guilty look" even when we had our show Greyhounds we would get looks of we aren't welcome at the vets or our dog is going maul everything because they would look with there ears alert & happy,Mind you whilst the owners looked in shear horror there own dogs would be displaying poor behaviour but that didn't count. I also don't believe as a big dog owner its my job to make you feel safe ,it sounds like the dog was under control & did nothing but "look" & you ran away from it . As a responsible dog owner its all our duty to have our dogs under control . If someone doesn't then yes i will ask or simply wait outside with my dogs or ask a staff member to deal with it . That is what i like about the 2 vet clinics we use all animals must abide by the responsible waiting room rules & all must be leashed & controlled our in there pet carriers
  4. sounds like indoor toile training may be the best option if going in winter is going to be an issue . I would simply buy a plastic low tray & some real rolled turf & try ,
  5. The concept very true infact have seen many a person go flying especially with people who use extender leads & have a friend who due to an extender lead was knocked over & broke her hip . So yes i believe the story is very possible but i do agree why wouldn't you ring for help & leave the child where he was . Very sad what ever the reasons is & if it is foul play then they should rot in hell
  6. Where do you keep the oil .mine has never been rock solid ?? Its soft just mix as is in the food ,so no point making it into liquid as it often ends up at the bottom but i have melted it & no loss of product
  7. I gather you picked the breeder because you like there dogs, the way they have grown & there health in later age. If you trust your breeder then i wouldn't be playing around with the diet ,if you do ask them ,they now there breed, the do's/don'ts & the why's . Many also guarantee the growth of there pups by the diet sheet they supply & will void issues if you change to something they may not recommend or have discussed with them . This really is something you should have discussed with your breeder first ,they may have great info to give you on how to do it correctly because if you stuff up the dog may pay the price .
  8. We aren't registered with the ANKC .Breeders are registered with there state member bodies ,so the breeder would have to say they are a DogsVic registered breeder ,As a dogsvic member all pups must go with papers etc etc . The breeder would have held a prefix . Plenty of good ethical breeders do advertise on that website because that is where the genearl public look problem is people not asking questions . I doubt there is you can do except email the site saying the ad contains info that isn't true & the facts you have
  9. So infact the pup could have come over with it from NZ
  10. Maybe consider an indoor toilet for her ,whilst im not a real fan of these i do now many toy breeds do very well using this method & giving she goes on a bed or rug maybe this could be a solution .Obviously this wont solve the over night thing. I will say friends have Chis & some of them are the hardest to toilet train & they will go where ever . Some are indoor toilet trained & do great & others are spotless & go outside in all weather . I find with the Chi's i have been around they just don't give the signs to want to go & don't make an effort to hang on but i would go back to square one & give it a try . When she goes outside does she go on the grass ??
  11. yes you need to retrain her ,it is her normal to go inside ,if she didn't make the effort to tell you whilst in the house she won't in a crate . Also kennel dog doesn't equate to a dirty dog ,our kennel dogs will never soil in there kennel & from a boarding kennel point of view you have those dogs that are spotless & wait to be let out & those that will toilet anywhere anytime & make no effort because its there normal . Does she have free access outside during the day or do you let her out ??
  12. As mentioned a false positive can show up & infact not be Parvo, how long was the pup hospitalized .
  13. Yep human error give the culprit the bill , It isn't that hard to put socks away for the safety of the dog
  14. We are like Clyde there are breeds or combos we will no longer groom & Mals /Mal crosses are one of them .All groomers will be able to house them its just there polite way of saying no From history they come in in bad coat condition /untrained & simply not worth the money to do them & yes your body suffers bigtime afterwards & alot of Groomers are now picking what they groom due to past history, hard for people with those breeds but 40 kg of untrained /unco operative dog just isn't worth the time . The tools a groomer uses you can easily buy yourself & brush out the dog more often & in shorter bursts . We don't use industrial tools we just do the job fully because we have too , Try WA grooming academy they are SOR but train students in grooming so it seems they take all sorts of dogs for experience or they may have one of the past students on that side of the river
  15. If there the breeds your interested in then its a list of chalk & cheese . Every breed has its negativ & any puppy purchaser should be aware of them BUT some sites on the net are often misleading or over dramatic or give out incorrect info in the whole scheme of things or are created by people who actually have no real clue . I would imagine the NBT issue is a breeder that solely breeds natural bobs to natural bobs generation after generation Then yes that is an issue but no sane breeder would breed that way . All shedding dogs need brushing ,an Aussie would need just as much brushing as a westie ,they coat may shed differently but matts/dags occur on both so need breed is easier in that regard . Matted pants on breed like Aussies & goldies are because people say they heavily shed & will fall out it doesnt . I agree to to some shows & look at breeds or look on the breed pages on this site & see what breeds you like the look off & go from there
  16. When it comes to roaming cats its a pickle ,our dogs wouldn't play nicely but by the same token roaming cats aren't my problem if they enter my yard where my dogs are safely contained then i can't do much more It frustrates me no end when people allow there cats to torment our dogs or jump in our yard.luckily here we don't have that issue BUT by the same token saying to your neighbour my dogs may not like your cat is admitting something i wouldn't want . If you where to approach the subject then think carefully how you word it ^ its sad that we have to think this way because it isn't fair on the cat or your dogs or yourself
  17. Have they considered Spondylosis of the neck ?? I had a dog with spondo & whilst it wasn't in his neck he suffered greatly from neck tightness, lameness in the front, took alot of convincing to get the vets to consider it . Funnily enough his best treatment was bowen & it took alot of work to sort his neck muscles out & its pianful
  18. I don't think i would send a letter out like the example you have given ,for me its saying my dogs could be a pain ,they havea history & where still tying so be warned. We have moved alot with dogs & never told our neighbours anything ,most had no clue we had dogs as they where quiet & not an issue . If you wish to inform them then i would be doing like Cowanbree & given a card with contact details incase anything odd happens but i wouldn't be going into any detail about settling in periods or anything else . I also wouldn't be saying anything until you have moved in & got a feel for how the dogs may react whilst your home . If people are going to complain they will often because most people take issues with being told there dogs are badly behaved i think people accept new neighbours with pets when they see you being pro active & responsible & that often opens up talk more
  19. Like everything its research BUT also looking at the dogs ,there temps & how they interact with general public. House raised doesn't guarantee any more better than kennel raised & i think people shouldn't fall into the trap of just presuming one way means a better pup . Its also unrealistic to compare a small breed litter to a large breed litter where by 5 weeks the needs are very different. Free roaming a property can simply mean we have lots of space so never need to take them out ,it could mean our dogs are very active & high need & may not suit the average backyard pet . I now plenty of BC whose pups are raised in the house then go to the kennels super pets that do well in all fields with a stable mind & enjoyable to live with . Like already mentioned buying a health tested dog is a no brainer if they want a pup with some guarantees not to be afflicted with issues that are testable . Then it would be the dogs ease to interact with mi can tell you now some of the best dogs i have been around may not come from the frilly & fancy place some may expect . For me there is more to now about the dogs, breeder & there pups than it lives on the couch & yes our pups are raised in the house BUT you still have to make the same effort to give them enrichment than those raised outside . The key is people can right any words to make you think awesome so its important to check out what is fact from fiction & what each breeder offers in support & knowledge
