  1. RIP Luke. We hope you are enjoying being able to walk and to run, and even have a scratch if you want to now.
  2. If puppy tricks are worth trying, then how about a ticking clock or softly playing radio to give him some background noise? Agree with you that this is such a hard decision to make. You need to be comfortable that the time has come for your own peace of mind.
  3. Are you different somehow, and he is picking up a different vibe? Was this a new situation and therefore he had no memory to use as a guide to his reaction? So he thought about his response and based this on the newer skills he has now?
  4. Mark, how do you suggest this approach is used in a multi-dog home? For example, Coda will sit quietly at first and Jatz will be fussing around. Then Coda will get tired of waiting and he'll start to fuss by which time Jatz has usually calmed down. And so on it goes. Am I just not waiting for long enough perhaps?
  5. Watching his shows I find it interesting that he gets people to walk the dogs on a really short leash, so they to stay next to you. Wonder if the dogs learn that next to the human is a good place to be, or if the human has to always use the short leash technique to avoid having the dog out out in front and pull on a full lead.
  6. Had my lesson today with Jatz - first time for her, third time for me. And you might just have a point there - he is just too nice to tell you straight out that the reason your dog is misbehaving is because the owner is a ....... As he said to me today, it takes two to pull :D Now do you have that phone number? :D
  7. Would you mind sharing that advice with us?
  8. Here is the link off Steve's page: http://www.k9force.net/index.html?row2col2=innotekrt.html Would recommend a session with Steve to learn how to use it if you can achieve this. His page doesn't say anything about vet authority - I thought that was for anti-bark collars....? Anyhow, I'm sure a phone call to Steve will answer your questions and seeing as you are both in NSW that should make things easier.
  9. One of my fosters is living with his new family in Shalvey, and they would like to take him to school. Can anyone suggest a club out that way?
  10. Its depressing, isn't it - firstly how much they adore Steve - secondly how well behaved they are for him "What do you mean this dog pulls?" deelee2, would heartily recommend a session with Steve if you can get there.
  11. Thought Sentinel was different because it did cover all types? It says it does tapeworm?
  12. Glad to hear it is nothing serious - did the vet give any hints in how to tell the difference between a mild irritation and "get to the vet now" sort of ear?
  13. Does he do this with all his bones? Maybe a different type would encourage him to eat NOW rather than bury them. Maggoty kisses
  14. Think you are onto something there Oonga - if the video was sold I'm sure they could make a packet. Then maybe they could run free workshops for all us DOLers!
  15. Think Poodle wrangler might be on to something with those suggestions. How could anyone NOT want Daegon snuffling up to them? Can the kids help you feed the dogs? Am assuming your dogs sit for their food so it might be an easy way to get the kids involved? Or you can just send Daegon up to me :D
  16. A Dog's Purpose, (from a 6-year-old) Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish Wolfhound named Belker. The dog's owners, Ron, his wife, Lisa, and their little boy, Shane, were all very attached to Belker. I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family we couldn't do anything for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home. As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for six-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt as though Shane might learn something from the experience. The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker's family surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on. Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away. The little boy seemed to accept Belker's transition without any difficulty or confusion. We sat together for a while after Belker's death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives. Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, "I know why." Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned me. I'd never heard a more comforting explanation. He said, "People are born so that they can learn how to live a good life-- like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?" The six-year-old continued, "Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long."
  17. My dog pees when she is nervous e.g they are not officially allowed upstairs but sometimes Jatz will jump the baby gates and come up for a visit. As soon as she sees us, she pees even before we have said anything to her. Any ideas on this one? She also pees when she goes back to see her breeder, but not with any other visitors so far.
  18. Second the idea of getting a crate. Does it have to an airline one, or could it be her regular crate that she also uses inside?
  19. Depends on the time of year. During winter I'm not home during daylight hours.
  20. Sounds like you have a "funniest home video" in the makings!
  21. Must admit we used to send our ESS to the groomer every so often. It was expensive but he always came back looking beautiful.
