Hi - if that is directed at me then I didn't express myself well enough. I do get it ! and I understand that there is a lot of bias against braccy faced dogs but what I was trying to say was that if you are going to describe a dog to "average Joe" Staffy is the term that most people will relate to any braccy faced dog. If searching for a dog I think it is really important to have a good description - as you know dogs range from a 1kg Chi to a 90kg Wolfhound. I describe my Lappie as a super hairy very chatty BC and my Borzois as giant hairy Greyhounds and I haven't come across anyone who doesn't understand these descriptions.

I think it is important to describe any dog with a breed type - I am currently trying to get my council to change my Lappies rego from Rare Breed to Finnish Lapphund - Rare Breed could mean anything. Unfortunately most people can picture a dog type if told it is a Staffie.

I have a very laid back Lappie too - she is now 8 years old and is just as happy to lie around at home all day or go for a long walk/run with my Borzois. Mine puts more energy into chatting than anything else :laugh:

Sorry this happened to your friend Sheena - I hope they both recover quickly. Although a different situation but I managed to get one of mine to drop a very dead bird by hosing his mouth - I guess a high pressure hose in the mouth might work to break up a fight.

I've tried the Snoozer type beds for mine but they won't go near them - luckily I was able to return them to the shop ! Mine like to sleep on their backs so they need something to support them - a couple of leather sofas off Gumtree got the nod of approval :)

which many, many breeds have and is managed by very many owners very well. My 2 Borzoi's completely ignored a mouse running round the lounge - I had to get the Lappie in who dispatched it quickly !

I have found a lot more people know the name Russian Wolfhound rather than Borzoi. I usually say Borzoi - Russian Wolfhound - or huge hairy cuddly greyhound :laugh:

I found a flea on Bosco late yesterday and dashed down to the nearest vet - $421 later for 4 packets of Comfortis for 3 dogs and 2 cats !!!!!! This is the first time we have had fleas for at least 10 years so I was very surprised at the cost. But I have enough now to treat them for a couple of months.

The burnt skin was not always immediately noticeable under their hair and, in one case, a dog suffered for three weeks with the burns as her owner and vet tried to work out what was wrong with her. The groomer, Lance Baker, 54, formerly of Macquarie, pleaded guilty in the ACT Magistrates Court to two charges of neglect animal so as to cause pain. Magistrate Beth Campbell on November 25 fined him $6000 and sentenced him to a four-month jail sentence, fully suspended on him entering an 18-month good behaviour bond. But Baker, who has been declared bankrupt, is unlikely to pay the fine or the thousands of dollars in vet bills. He has also relocated to Melbourne so was not able to be sentenced to any community service. The offences occurred at two salons then owned by Baker – Dog World at Hume and Animal Attractions at Macquarie – between June 1, 2013, and September 6, 2013. Eight of the dogs were burned – Banjo, Boo Boo, Cupid, Bella, Theo, Molly, Miley and Ella. A ninth, Angus, fell off the grooming table and injured his leg. The owners of Miley, Jaid and Jenny Dawson, of Banks, believe Baker got a "quite lenient" sentence and were upset there was nothing to prevent him from working with animals again. "I feel a little bit disgusted," Mr Dawson said. Miley suffered third-degree burns at Dog World on September 7, 2013. At the time, the couple said their much-loved spoodle, now seven years old, looked like she had "basically been put in a fan-forced oven". The Dawsons spent $11,000 on vet fees and $5000 in legal fees trying to locate Baker. They were given a $5400 donation from dog lovers after their story appeared in The Canberra Times. ADVERTISING Mrs Baker said she understood the limitations placed on the magistrate. "But the worry in the end is you can't be sure it won't happen again.," she said. Baker maintained that another employee had caused the injuries but as the owner of the two salons, he took responsibility. He promised the owners publicly in The Canberra Times in November 2013 that he would repay their vet fees but none of them have seen a cent. A statement of facts tendered to the court outlined that Baker's partner, Claire Carmody, who co-owned the salons, confirmed to RSPCA inspectors that the "small dogs were placed in cat carry cages and left with one of the dryers blowing on to them". The cages would become extremely hot and the dogs had no way to escape the blasts of heat. Another staff member, when questioned about her qualifications, told the inspectors Baker had taught her. Charnwood woman Nadine Morton's then five-year-old Maltese-cross, Boo, suffered burns at Animal Attraction on July 27. His vet fees were $1800. She said on Friday she was disappointed with Baker's sentence. "Really, we were expecting it," Mrs Morton said. Mrs Morton said after her dog was injured, another six were burnt at the salons even as she complained to Baker about the treatment Boo had received. "If he had of listened to us when we were worried about Boo's injuries, all the other dogs would have been saved," she said. I've got these ones too....fully adjustable & doesn't restrict movement :) She wears it during agility training & also as a car harness I dont own one (been resisting ) but they have an adjustable neck area, so maybe worth a shot. I bought one for my Borzoi and am slightly disappointed with it. The harness is very round and firm and the Borzoi is very slim ! I hope it softens up then it will hopefully fit better.

I couldn't agree more. I actually annoys me when people slate front connecting harnesses when the ones they have seen in action are very cheap chinese copies with dodgy rings that have been slung togther cheaply and sit way too low. You get what you pay for, if you want a good quality well fitting harness that sits high so is not too restrictive then pay a little extra and get one. rant over lol Exactly - that is why it's important to find the right harness for your dog - there is a huge difference between the shape of a staffy and the shape of a tall sighthound but I have seen both with different but correctly fitting harnesses that don't impede shoulder movement.

And the question no one ever seems to ask is WHY? It's not magic that's involved. If I fitted a dog with front leg hobbles it would 'walk nicely" too. This is the same principle applied to the dogs shoulders. I'm not quite sure what you mean by front leg hobbles but if this was the case after these dogs had been properly fitted then surely they won't have been able to walk nicely. And when I said walk nicely I meant with a nice normal gait and in some cases a doggy smile and tail wag. :)

Obviously training to walk without pulling is the key but a lot of people don't train their dogs correctly. I recently attended a public dog event and saw lots of dogs pulling their owners around choking because of collars. Some of these dogs were then fitted with harnesses and it was great to see them them walk away nicely without choking. Many well known trainers around the world are using front connecting harnesses for example Victoria Stillwell. Contradictory studies come out all the time - just look at coffee - one day it's good next it's the worst thing in the world ! I find it hard to believe that a harness on for 30 minutes a day could do serious damage if correctly fitted. And yes I walk 2 Borzoi and a Lappie together with harnesses with loose leads. I have watched them very closely since first reading Dr Christine Zink research and I have yet to see any change in their gait. As others in this thread have said - if it means a dog can have a pleasant relaxing walk without choking on a harness then surely it has to be better.

That's interesting blinkblink I understand what you're saying. I have done training with my 2 whom I have had since they were pups. But my Nicky who is 3 years old and been with me for about 3 months obviously hasn't had any previous training but she is the easiest dog I've ever had. She doesn't respond to single work commands eg if I say "out" the others will go outside and she will ignore me but if I say "come on Nicky time to go out" she happily trots outside. She also gives me funny looks if I offer her food outside of mealtimes - she thrives on pats and cuddles.

He's nearly 8 months, and not desexed (yet - will happen in a few more months). Will keep your recommendations in mind! The only trimming I'd ever consider is his feet to reduce mud tracking, but they are supposed to have snow boots! He does have some hilarious looking longer hairs on some of his toes though! ah! at 8 months he's moving through coat change which is always a more challenging grooming time. I would suggest a professional groom before desexing him. Get one coat blow done first. Once desexed, over time these coats tend to get heavier and often don't blow out quite as easily as entire ones. Redfeather - I agree with blinkblink - a Lappie pup coat going into adult coat is hard work ! My girl was desexed young and she comes from a very heavy coated line so she has a massive coat. I allow at least 3 hours at the groomer for her. Very sadly he died alone and was not found for some days. The 3 Borzois were put in a boarding kennel for a couple of weeks before a friend of mine was contacted about them. My friend got the 3 of them from the boarding kennel and took them back to his place - he already had 2 Borzois. The relatives of the owner couldn't take them and were happy for them to be rehomed. The breeder was interstate and was also happy for them to be rehomed. As soon as I saw the photos on Facebook and heard the background story I offered to take one. Nicky was rather scared, nervous and upset when I collected her. She has been with me now for almost 3 months and she has fitted in perfectly with my Borzoi, Lappie and 2 cats. She is the sweetest most affectionate best behaved delightful dog I have ever had ! Nicky's 2 sisters were also rehomed in SA.
