  1. Annnd dog attack word of the year "mastiff" gets another outing.... What, pit bulls too boring these days?
  2. Oh no As soon as I saw the name I thought "not Mr Wilson!" I'm very sorry for your loss.
  3. He is a shiba. Even if he did hear it, if there wasn't anything in it for him he would just play deaf..... :D
  4. In Tassie we only have ravens, not crows. But people still call them crows. Best way to make a Tasmanian zoologist explode? Call a raven a crow
  5. I had this problem a few years back because my front lawn grew too long (yes, really) The neighbour complained over and over to the council about my dogs barking all day (Step 1, they are shibas, they don't bark much, they scream/yodel)Council came out to check about 5 times, all the times my dogs were asleep. In fact, they didn't even bark at the strange man walking up to the gate. (Memo to future shiba owners, not big on the whole guard dog thing...) The guy from council was fine and ignored all complaints from my neighbour after that. Er, she passed away a few months later, so that doesn't help at all....
  6. I changed vets a while back. I recently had to take one of my boys in to get a lump looked at/removed. . This included knocking out my dog (around 11 kilos if that helps)removing a rapidly growing thingy that went from a small bump to a big festy goo ridden lump in less than a week... Apparently said lump was in a bad place and vet told me it would destroy his tear duct. The vet decided that while Boxhead was out he might remove a wart that was growing happily on his eye lid. So, they burnt off a wart on his eye lid,and cut out his lump, which luckily had't grown into his tear duct and was apparently pretty good in the way of lumps (It was "encapsulated') Basically, at the end of the day I paid around $150? that included the original vet consultation the day before and the surgery the next day. I was in shock a little...... Expected it to cost me far more...........
  7. My poor boy is 11 as well and has developed what the vet calls "seasonal allergies" He also gets irritable and bald. He gets cortisone but doesn't have any problems with it, so I'm not really any help .The only thing I can say is that it has gotten worse each year as he gets older. But I can sympathise with you
  8. What's a "pookie" dog? Do they mean lil fluffies?
  9. Umm... The same dog who allegedly ran out the front door in a "threatening manner". This is a big dog. Ms Elliott said her father had asked police why Bruiser had been shot and was told: "It scared me." Yeah, funny that, I'm on their side. We are talking a big dog. A BIG dog, and said big dog charged them, sorry, just barked and growled.....
  10. Were you there? If not then give a thought for the police officer (was it a lady?)who may not be dog savvy and was there for a reason that may actually be not to sell raffle tickets. What if, hypothetically(as all responses have to be)said police person had knowledge of the people they went to visit? Off topic but really, a bullmastiff named Bruiser? *insert bogan*
  11. Sorry but for most people a bullmastiff running towards them barking and growling is enough of a threat, no matter how harmless the dog....
  12. No. Because no matter how responsible a breeder is, there will always be something they didn't prepare for. Maybe you have had breed A for years, know everything about it ect. All it takes is one dog to change the game. Maybe you end up with a bitch on heat jumping a fence that you have contained many of her breed before and didn't see it possible. Maybe Someone moves in down the road with a dog who goes to any length to get to your girl who you have safely kept seperate for years when she is on heat. Any length, including ones you haven't seen before because it took that one dog to do it. This is why even if there is a perfect world of pet ownership, there will always be crossbreeds. Nope. Why do people spend $1000 plus on a byb blue staffy or even more on the latest designer "doodlowhatsit" Some of those things cost in the thousands. I bought my rare (compared to staffies, blue or otherwise) breed for $800. From a registered breeder, with papers. Yes! Thing is, hundreds of thousands of people have a mutt/crossbreed dog. There isn't thousands of maulings from these dogs. Why? Some of it genetics, but most is owners.Think about it? The adverage "bogan" or pet owner is not that dog savy. How many times do we hear "my dog has run off, oh wait, I don't have fences" Or "I own a *insert breed* " and it's never done that before!" when said *it* is common to said breed. I agree with this. I have met many everyday folk. I can tell you now, the everyday people teach their dog to sit, maybe even take it to "obedience class" or far more common "puppy school" They don't get that it's on going or it's their fault if they assume that the few weeks of training wasn't enough. I have lost count of how many people I have met who don't have the slightest clue how to care for their breed of dog (that goes for pure bred/cross ect)..... but wait, funny thing, for some reason those who have put the hard yards in, researched and spent time deciding that the breed they want is actually suitable for their situation and are happy to wait for the right breeder rather than getting bored and buying the first byb litter in the local paper don't seem to pop up on the dog attack statistics? Ehem, an example here (which will upset the lapphund breeders no end....) To me. lapphunds look like a pretty mutt. They look like some kinda border collie/malamutey cross. I'm sure you can breed a couple of breeds together and get the same look. Some of the time, maybe. Some of the litter would look like them, some wont. Some might *look* like a lappie, but wont have the years of genetics and characteristics that a lapphund has. But you cant breed these look a likes together and get a lappie. They are their own breed, and not something that can be chucked out in some kinda dog fondue. THIS How do you stop the everyday man from doing this? Seriously... How many times is this? It is not a crime. How many people have a dog/s and love them so much that they must breed them to get a clone of the dog they love, or because he/she would make a great mother/father, or they paid however hundreds for said dog and want to recoup their money back. Snort. Dogs aren't drugs. Breeding them is not illegal, there is no mystery, only profit. But sadly some breeders can be morons....
  13. This is very interesting.... He has explored the new yard a great deal, but has never been allowed out overnight because he has panic attacks after dark and the new yard isn't secure enough to deal with his stress attacks.(when he freaks out and will ninja out of almost any fence ) Maybe clamping down on his blankie in the laundry is his "happy" place in the new house? After all, I was in the old house for 10 years.... It could explain why Wylie (the other boy) has suddenly gone from "run about blindly in puddles" to "I cant mum, I'll get my feet wet and melt".... Hmmmmmmm
  14. Loki is a funny lil critter... He iswas one of those weird dogs that love sleeping out on wet mud and cold concrete. Not kidding... give him a blanket and snuggy warmth and he rejected it for frostbite. We just moved house and now suddenly he is reluctent to move.... I thought it might be because of the change in his life but "he just dwells happily here" as they say.. He now sleeps indoors and he wont get up at all when asked. He curls up in a ball and nothing can break him up...
  15. So far yes... He is getting old, going blind (which added a basketful of paranoia to his resume)He has good teeth. Very good teeth apparently. The last check up he was fine. No problems at all. I do wonder about his eyes and ears, but he is shiba. I know that means nothing for most of you but for those who know...I spent a year convinced he was deaf but he was just totally ignoring me because I didn't have the treats he wanted........
  16. I'm sure I can search back through here and find all kinds of answers but quite frankly... um, I really can't do the search thing. (plus I'm lazy) Anyhoo... My old boy is taking his old thing to the next level. He just turned 11 (Go Loki! ) and apart from failing eyesight and a bit quite a bit of white hair he is doing pretty well. Except recently he is slowing down. He really doesn't want to get up in the morning and it takes a bit of motivation to get him up to go outside. He doesn't react when I feel him up all over, nothing seems to make him react like he is in pain. I'm starting to think he might have a bit of arthritis trouble? Is there anything that I can give him? I know there are certain blends that people recommend but I need to know what. The vet may be his next port of call soon... but I was hoping there is an simpler solution.... Of course, he now has a brand new handmade knitted blankie made by my partners mother and there is always the possibility that he just doesn't want to leave it..... (should mention he is an old man shiba inu and everyone knows shibas are mad to begin with....)
  17. It's always the same types of dogs as well. Bull breeds and lil fluffies. The normal byb backyard dogs. These dogs are very common and often owned by less dog savy owners. The kind of owners who might let their dog roam or assume that if their dog has gone missing it must be stolen because "it has never gotten out before"
  18. If he was black or brindle I don't think you would say dingo first up, I think the sandy hair leads you there. First imression to me is German shepherd cross.
  19. I have a dog here that despite having a blanket lined bed, and another blanket lined bed indoors still loves to celebrate Winter waiting to the really cold frosty days and sleep outside in the yard on cold ground or exposed concrete. Shivering dramatically whenever I walk into view mind you. Yes, dogs are weird.
  20. Plus the poor little button had to recover from her accident if I recall? (how is she doing now., btw? :) )
  21. She is really looking half sesame there :) Wylie (boxhead) is a sesame :D yeah, Lokis "ailments" were always pretty funny. That was before he got real ones that is...
  22. 4 days post surgery, no, that's not so good. poor lil thing Off topic, is she a sesame?
  23. let me tell you the story of Loki and the limp :) When he was 2 he escaped from the yard and was hit by a car. Sadly, he broke his pelvis in two places. Because he was in pain, he was possibly spoilt a bit He decided that a limp got him attention and good things... So for the next 4 years everytime he didn't get his own way this magical limp would appear. For example, when I went to a cetain shop I would buy him a tasty marrow bone. If I went to the shop (with him) and didn't actually buy anything this magical limp would appear. This magical limp appeared everytime I tried to bath him, or he had to go to the vet... or even sometimes when I told him off for trying to eat the cat food. It was the most amazing limp. Except the limp would change sides depending on which way he was walking... Poor guy, was obviously in so much pain.... He didn't "put on an act" but he got a reaction that got him treats, so he will play that card if he can..... lil bugger  Should point out, it's not breed specific because poor boxhead is a close relative and he wouldn't notice if you chopped off an ear, he'd still keep bouncing around. :) Nothing rocks that dudes boat.
