  1. Keep in mind people only go and complain somewhere online if they've had an issue - the huge amounts of people with no issue don't bother setting the record straight. With any medication fere could be a reaction, it's just usually very unlikely unless there is an underlying sensitivity/health concern. I think you've been scared by what you read and you're not listening to either your vet or the posters here. Correlation is not causation. How quickly did the owners go to the vet? What where they prepared to pay for diagnostics? What was the time lag between taking the preventative and a reaction? What else had the dog been doing that day, and where had the dog been doing it? Bravecto isn't the only consumable flea and tick prevention out there, nexguard and simparica also prevent fleas and ticks. While you said he's covered for fleas you can always play with his other preventative medication and use one of these. In any case, he's your dog so you do what feels right for you. Just try not to let fear drive decisions, in my experience decisions made from fear aren't usually the best ones. Do some more research on the other products etc and then make your decision.
  2. Jenl can't access off topic yet I think. There is a section of the forum for help/trouble shooting. Read through that and if you need, post there for help Re:bones, my mini schnauzer max loves his lamb or pork ribs a couple of times a week. I'm mean and feed them frozen, even in winter, cos then they last him a little longer.
  3. My adult dog would have been mortified once he was about 18mths to have to share his safe sleeping space with a pup! Mind you, he can have a tendency to be the fun police at times anyway. He'd be super offended if a pup thought they could sleep with him he gets along really well with pups otherwise.
  4. Are you planning on keeping any pups from this litter? A boy, perchance? Or does zig need another girl for his harem?
  5. So sorry you didn't get longer with your spunky girl xoxo
  6. Crossing everything for you guys that the surgery and results are good
  7. I've fed the prime 100 and thought it was ok, pretty darn dense - I struggled to get through the roll before either went off. I've not fed other rolls though, but the prime only has the meat, the 'other' like the tapioca in the croc and a little salt to my knowledge. I think for when you need a single protein they're very handy to have available
  8. Pretty sure in some states it is (or was) the law for shelters (and maybe vets in general) to tattoo dogs they desexed regardless of gender.
  9. So much calcium very little protein. Also, where are the amino acids etc coming from? Usually they come from offal and hard working muscle like heart. I know they (like us) can produce most of their amino acids but not all and not in quite enough quantity. So not balanced at all IMHO
  10. I used to use it exclusively but added in some holistic select and meals for mutts into my dog's diet (same time we added in half raw as he has contact grass allergies and the raw seems to help). For what it's worth I haven't noticed a decline and my dog still prefers it over other kibbles. He'll tolerate meals for mutts (aussie owned and made, I feed the grain free duck and turkey) and holistic select (I like the idea of the probiotics, he has the rabbit and lamb) but he wouldn't go near canidae or ivory coat no matter how I dressed it up! He always had the lamb and rice but I recently got the grain free roo variety (I was interested to see if he'd like it) and he's gobbling it down happily
  11. Ok, so I wandered into petbarn today and they tell me that it has been tested on paralysis ticks in studies (paid for by zoetis I imagine) and that it's supposed to have a close to 100% kill rate of fleas and ticks within 8hrs. So whether it kills fleas as fast as comfortis (about 30 mins I think, though that doesn't do ticks) they didn't know - as in the data/advertising they've been shown only listed 8hrs as the earliest. It may not have been tested in a shorter timeframe yet. I guess where it differs is instead of 30 day protection it's guaranteed to 35 days so you get a few days leeway if you forget. It also does mange mites, demodex mites and ear mites. It would be interesting to see tests comparing something like advocate to simparica for mange treatment and see if you'd need to treat the dog for as long.
  12. Oh sm. That last pic of him in the crate got me too. Give yourself some extra loving self care this week while hubby is away xoxo
  13. I've heard ads for it but never seen it so I can't give feedback except that I believe it exists...somewhere!
  14. How upsetting. What you don't need on a pretty emotional purchase is terrible, unfeeling customer service and an inferior product.
  15. He was so loved. Be kind to yourself sm, you gave him the best of life and the best of ending - there's no greater gift or show of respect
  16. I always go with the theory that it is in their best interests to euthanise when 50% of their time is spent without the quality of life they deserve. You love him fiercely, that much is evident. So if you are thinking it is in his best interests to go now rather than a continued decline in quality of life then it is the right time. The great thing is when it isn't just physical concerns is you can make his last few days/weeks as amazing as possible. The one pet who I don't look back on and wish for more time was my Burmese cat with dementia. They physically broken ones I feel they were more robbed of time. He's had an amazing 3.5 years with you and you couldn't have loved him more or made his life any better. The financial argument may just be a way of trying to convince yourself that it's time, in any case, it can be a determining factor of quality of life. Letting go is never easy and always sucks xoxo
  17. I feed once in the evening but max gets a 'treat' every morning which is deducted from his daily ration. It's what works for him as he's not hugely food motivated so he won't eat his meal if he's not pretty hungry - and he would hassle the cats for theirs much later (he gets his at 6, the cats at 9)
  18. I'm so sorry zena's mum. You gave her the kindest and most loved life and goodbye a dog could wish for. I wish you, your family and zena's daughter all the love in this crappy, sad time xoxo
  19. He sounds like such a character! What a blessing to have had such a wonderful, loving soul in you life. I'm so sorry he's gone.
  20. Sorry Mowgli, I more meant I wouldn't like a vet who dismissed a client who said their dog was limping on and off. If the dog is showing pain sometimes it's a fair bet it's in pain a lot more often and the vet should've taken that seriously from the start IMHO. I mean, the dog could've been on injections or supplements to help alleviate pain since initial presentation but instead it's been in pain. Not your friend's fault, I'd move vets after not being taken seriously.
  21. It may not be dietary related but it is relatively easy to figure that out through elimination diets and only slowly adding stuff back in. Fwiw my dog has a contact grass allergy and the right diet helps his immune system cope, along with walking only on concrete in high times and using various shampoos/washes etc. Haven't had him on steroids etc for years now, so a multifaceted approach to environmental allergens can be of benefit.
  22. Personally I'd tell your friend to go to a different vet who is interested in diagnosing the limp rather than just seeing some changes. Not to mention that the dog is in pain and the vet dismissed it for a long time! As to the itch, a specialist dermatologist might be helpful, as might doing an elimination diet? The prices don't seem particularly expensive but you need to remember there is no Medicare or pbs for animals so it'll always be more than costs for humans. As PK says, they find it expensive to buy the drugs in too.
  23. When I was working at a shelter we had a female kitten desexed, chipped etc scanned post chip insertion and two weeks later when she was adopted we just couldn't find it. We knew what the chip number was and that she had been chipped but vet nurses, two vets and the adoption girls couldn't find it or feel it. She was rechipped a couple of weeks after she was adopted at the shelter's expense. I was there when the chips were read after insertion for the whole litter (I was doing the paperwork) and they worked but clearly it moved and also stopped working. There was a special note put on the original chip with the registry referring to the new chip including the new number as there was the concern if it started working again the details would lead people back to the shelter not the owners. Chips do move and they can fail (like all technology). S*** situation for the original and newer owners.
  24. Not sure @juice all the corgis (Cardigan and Pembroke) I've met have good with kids but also raised with them. Every time I've met one I've thought what robust, fun and great family dogs they are - but it could be that the only handful I've met are simply awesome examples cos it would only be about 5 I've met.
