Lure Coursing In Adelaide - For Non-greyhounds
Esky the husky replied to jacqui835's topic in General Dog Discussion
Hi hockz Nothing has happened yet. Virginia is the only place I know of that has a straight/ slipping track which is what we used last time. What kind of dog do you have? -
First off, I'd be looking at getting a dog that suits you otherwise then worry about play style. My husky girl has lived with other dogs and I found they adapted to each other quite well. She got along particularly well my sister in laws boxer. But she did annoy father in laws dog, who is some kind of kelpie mutt. He is very focussed on the ball and will sit staring at you waiting for you to chuck it. Esky would paw and sometimes even jump on him, trying to get him stirred up and make him run again. From my experience husky play involves a lot of bitey face, butt bumps and running really really fast  That said don't get a husky if you don't understand the breed. My girl might get on with most labs out and about, but obedience wise they are lightyears apart

Well we've achieved something off this list OMG! Technically pulling 10x body weight and 250kg ended up being the same thing. Esky is bang on 25kg at the moment. We had weightpull introductory night last night. I went along to build confidence pulling the cart and just get her back into things The set up wasn't ideal, so I didn't want to push her any harder than that. Hoping for a good year of weightpull :D I think it may even have been her PB Just checked and yes it is her PB :D

How To Find A Dog-friendly Rental In Melbourne ?
Esky the husky replied to LabsRock61a's topic in General Dog Discussion
Here's my tips, not specific to Melbourne, never rented there but have had success in Adelaide, Outer SA, and regional NSW. Pet resume's / references are a great idea. Mine were one page with pics, I also included a little bio about my bf and I. Went to all the open houses with all the application forms already pre filled, if I liked the house, I handed it straight over to the agent. If the forms weren't available online, I got them at the open house filled them out and submitted them to the real estate office that day. Kept a folder on me with copies of ID, previous leases etc, whatever they'd need to see. On two separate occasions we ended up getting friendly with the agents, and they approved us and essentially let us pick from a couple of houses. Small property management companies are good for that. We dealt with one that only had two in the office and only did rentals. Double edged sword there though, they were always on our case when it came to inspections... etc We've had incredible success, so far 100% of houses we've applied for have approved us. Good Luck Oh and none of these were listed as pet friendly, I just avoided ones that said 'no pets' -
Endurance Test 2013

Is it ( the ET) do able on a BMX? -
Esky self pats, she has a tree just the right height in the backyard and she rubs herself back and forward along it. Weirdo

I haven't had issues with them unsupervised. My girl is a slow eater though so I don't worry about her getting caught. She would never just lick paste out of it. I use them in conjunction with meals. It's either part of her meat ration for the day, or you can fill it with kibble and water and freeze overnight. I always freeze otherwise it's over with very quickly. Another option might be a treat ball, or kong wobbler, tug a jug etc as something else to occupy a young mind

I take my girl out with me, she rides in the crate on the back of the ute. I don't do it when it's crazy hot, but when it's mild I'll leave her if I need to go and get something. She has to get used to travelling and being confined for racing anyway. If I'm going to be out of site I padlock or zip tie all the doors, just in case any people come along who are foolish and try to 'free' her

Endurance Test 2013
Esky the husky replied to Abbiestar's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Aww such a cute photo. We met horses on our last ride too. I ended up finding a horse harness racing trotting track. Amazing what you find when you aren't looking. Esky and I have been making good progress. We're up to about 6km, but training has been infrequent in the heat we've been having -

Exercise, Fitness And Your Dog
Esky the husky replied to Salukifan's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Well by roadwork I meant riding with dog trotting beside. I try to limit the pavement much as I can. I ride as close to the edge of the bike path and she has the option to run on the dirt / grass. Things like the springer or walky dog are great for this as they keep the dog a set distance from.the bike. Rs do you have anywhere aimilar that you can run on paths but let your dogs run somewhere softer -
An Ad For Dark Spot Remover Annoyed Me Last Night
Esky the husky replied to Katdogs's topic in General Dog Discussion
Theres an insurance add that annoys me. I think its allianz, it features a lot of people damaging their own cars in dumb ways. The star of the ad is a man and his border collie ( i think). His car clearly has puppy bars, but the dog is sitting in the front of his car unrestrained :/ oh and the ad for pet insurance pees me off, don't let your dog chase bikes mister! -

interesting article, maybe I'll cut my sessions down. 4 is do-able, 2 x sessions of racing 2 x race training :) -
Exercise, Fitness And Your Dog
Esky the husky replied to Salukifan's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Yours sounds like a good program, can I ask what's makes road work better than free running? I don't do a great deal of free running, there doesn't usually end up being much running involved, just a lot of sniffing then a bit of a trot around, and if I'm lucky some zoomies. Currently we're in our first stage of training. We sled race, so excercise is fairly dormant over summer, she's still walked as long as weather allows, but it's nothing strenuous. Occasionally we'll swim her too. At the moment we're trying to build up fitness and endurance. Whenever it's cold enough, I've been taking her up to the forest for a training run on trails. Been recording all the runs with runtracker/ endomondo to keep tabs on progress. Aiming to build fitness up to about 7-9 km of pulling in front of the scooter at moderate pace. In a month or two I'll drop the distance back down and start working on more speed with some interval training and then eventually to running race distances at race speed. At the moment averaging 1-2 forest runs per week, and supplementing with hand walking or cycling with her so she's trotting 3-4 nights. With at least 1 full rest day a week. I've never had a real training program before, so I'm hoping this will work for us :D -
^ There's plenty of other stuff pups can be introduced to in the household. Blenders, vacuum cleaners, brooms, toilets flushing. Anything noisy and scary. They can get used to being handled all over and accept grooming. Get used to seeing people wearing different outfits, flapping raincoat etc. And being introduced to different surfaces, grass, dirt, floorboard- whatever the breeder has handy really. They don't have to be taken outside the home to be introduced to a whole bunch of things. Esky's breeder takes the pups out in the car when she does the school run. They don't go out and socialise or anything, but still get to see plenty and get used to travelling. Not sure if it's a coincidence or not, but Esky's a perfect traveller, I am really thankful for breeders that take the time to introduce pups to as much of the world as they can while they're in their care :)

I've only got one here, and have only ever had one at a time since being an adut and making my own decisions about dogs. I would like to have more, two is the max I could have and manage to get a rental where I am, 5km for the CBD of Adelaide. Would be cool if I could borrow a second race dog for a while just to see how well I do with having two  (Anyone got a spare sibe ) Honestly, even though we don't do that well at races Esky manages to all but pay her keep in kibble with winnings. I think last year I spent about $40 for the year on kibble ( good stuff!) and whatever on bones. The real killer is fuel, up and back to the forest for training runs, in my awesomely inefficient car Training 3-4 dogs would work out the same. Same distance in fuel, they can all be trained at the same time. That's where sledding is awesome, the more dogs you've got the more fun it is :D
