  1. I am now wondering about the bait theory, kamuzz lives in my street and her setter is at the vets waiting for an xray for the same behavoir. Both our houses back onto church land, and we are the only ones with multiple big dogs Could be coincidence, but i didn't actually see Appollo eat anything on the walk, so could have happened earlier at home.
  2. yes he did have the barium balls, and they seemed to pass ok. However they havn't ruled out something causing a minor blockage that isn't showing up. He did a very small poo this morning, and ate a little breakfast. I rang the vet about him pooing himself, and it was almost black and he said that was ok, caused by damage. Mini corn cobs are just the same as corn on the cobs but smaller, apparently KFC have them.I thought at first it was a bone as it was so sharp, vet said they are worse than the big ones as they swallow them whole. Doubt it would be baited, there is a house near there that chucks its food waste onto the causeway, i have seen the lady doing it, and have shouted at her to stop once, but she does it in the same spot everyday and i watch him to make sure he doesn't make a dash for it. He is asleep atm, so going to keep an eye on him to see when the injection wears off, and about to cook up some rice ,so he just has chicken and rice for a few days.if he turns his nose up at tea time i know he's in need of another vet trip.
  3. I could do with some dol support right now My 13 year old dally, Appollo is not well. Weds evening on our walk he must of eaten at least one mini corn cob in the long grass while he was bunny hunting. I didn't see him eat anything, but assume thats when it happened. He came home and refused to eat, paced, kept drinking lots of water and then vomiting it up, i was unsure wether to head to the vets . Anyway he eventually through up a mini corn, so i thought that was it, he settled down and went to sleep. Next morning sick all over the floor, and he was really flat, kept wanting to go outside and just stand there, so took him to the vets. He was given something to settle his tum, fluids, 4 x rays over the last 2 days, and 'bips" to see if they passed along. They didn't want to operate as thought the one he through up could just be causing pain now. So last night they said he was perky, had eaten in the afternnon, nothing showing on the xrays so i could collect him.( $870 bill) When i got there the vet nurse brought him out, i thought he still looked flat, but thought he just wanted to go home, as soon as we got home he stood by the back door to go out, and then went around the garden trying to hide under things, going all around the edge, obviously uncomfortable, i kept calling him back in the warm, but he would just pace and stand by the door again and do the same. he wouldn't eat anything. After about an hour i noticed he was drooling, he then vomited twice. I rang the vet. He said he seemed fine at lunch time, but to bring him back in for a pain relief injection ,another $111 a pop. He said they still couldn't be sure there wasn't something in there, but it also could be the intestines are damaged ( ileus), which is very painful. The injection will last 24 hours and he can have upto 5of them. so this morning i get up to a dreaful smell and he is laying in his own poo I am assuming the injection has relaxed his muscle's? But its odd he didn't move away from it. I have washed him down, he seems a bit more calmer this morning. now i don't knowwhat to do, i will call the vet soon just to let them know what happened.
  4. Mine love the rain, they all have coats on and my BT actually does zoomies in the rain, she normally doesn't break out of a plod
  5. Have a look on Petrescue, the dogs there are in foster homes in all states. If they are a good rescue they will housecheck her, and make sure the dog is a good fit. She should get good backup and advice, the working dog rescue's also have their dogs in foster care if she is after a kelpie type.
  6. One of my foster was a 5 month old cattle pup who was so scared in the pound he would wet himself if you went near him. As soon as he got home he was a different dog.( bit of a terror!) Working breeds don't do well in the pound. I would be more concerned about how the kelpie went with the current dog, have they met? is the new dog male? Can she return it if it doesn't work out? Personally i wouldn't right it off, just see how the kelpie is around other dogs first.
  7. I have 3, but i have given up with my dally, he just curls up as far away from his as possible, so now my BT has 2 in her bed
  8. This is my son with Mason, they shared an amazing bond for the short eight months he lived with us till he went to the bridge.
  9. Mine arrived yesterday, the only thing that i would warn against is, i put it in the kennel for my BT, and later she started to scrape the bed around to get comfy, i noticed her jump in the kennel, and when i went out she had scraped open the velcro on the cover and the heat block was exposed and really hot. So i wrapped it in a pillow case and tied it up. My cattle dog laid stright ontop of his in his kennel, and my BT's was still warm under her at 7am this morning, i put them in at 9pm last night. My dally on the other hand who is inside spent all night trying to avoid it in his dogbed

I remember him too, so sad, as Dogmad said, the special ones are often not with us for long enough
  11. what they said I second the greyhound option too.Really easy dogs, they don't smell doggy, hardly bark ,if at all, don't pull on the lead, need really short walks.........lots more too. A good rescue will come and check you out, so don't be alarmed. You will also get a trial period to make sure you are happy with your new dog, and lots of backup.
  12. I think i fit the profile for owning my breed
  13. Just waiting for mine to come from the USA, got 3 for $74 :)
  14. Glad you got in touch with dogmad, she is fastideous about where her fosters go, you can be assured she will do the right thing by him. :)
  15. Alot of resue's can't take private surrenders due to the desperate ones about to die in the pounds, however i know Paws will allow you put the dog on their site if he is desexed. He really will end up in the wrong hands being that breed if he goes out undesexed. Tell her to get him done, then ask a small fee to cover it, never give him away for free, he will just bounce form place to place. The other option is get a pic and post in the rescue forum, someone may know of someone looking, Dogmad deals with little dogs, but she works like a demon 24/7 so would hate to burden here anymore, but she is a good start.
  16. I agree with both sides. I get concerned about the "save anything with a pulse" brigade too. However i also don't think all breeders do the right thing by their dogs either, we see many in rescue who really couldn't give a shit once they are gone. I will always own at least one purebred as BT'S are my favorite, and after having several from rescue who had health issue's i decided to get a mature dog from a breeder to fit my family. She arrived with undisclosed dry eye, and not great bite inhabition. I think the publics idea that purebreds owners are snobs stems alot from breeders being too unapproachable, i sent 3 emails to breeders when i was looking for a new dog, not one bothered to reply, i only got anywhere due to dol members helping me. Joe public would have given up. I have had some wonderful dogs through rescue, and i will continue to have a rescue if it fits my pack ( lurcher is on the list).
  17. i have just ordered 3 snuggle safe's for mine, just waiting for my sis to post them from the USA :)
  18. Actually my BT's poo is often like this, she is on Vans complete, with chicken mince, sardines in oil, and chicken necks.
  19. Dogs never just snap, the warning signs were just never noticed. Its like the vidoe's on tv of kids climbing all over a dog, who is looking away, licking its lips etc, its not amusing its an accident waiting to happen.
  20. Scent too. I also don't let anyone pat the dogs head, too comfronting, they are allowed to stand at the side and pat their back gently. The dog looks to you for guidance and protection, don't be afraid to say no if the dog has had enough.

I often think of you and your loss, so hard to bear, glad you are still with us.
  22. What a handsome chap, and doesn't he know it!
  23. After checking all the sites listed Budgetpetproducts is still the cheapest. I pay $88.90 for 6 Advocate xl with free postage. I find Petstock really good for Advance, mine regularly has 15% off, and you get a loyalty scheme, buy 10 bags get one free, so brings the price down too. :)
  24. i use budget pets on ebay, cheapest, and they post out the day you buy. i have used mammoth too, there is another power seller on there which looks cheap but takes over 2 weeks to come, cheaper pets or something, they don't have 100% feedback as they seem to hold onto your money for weeks before they post.
