Do You Ever Get The Feeling You're Being Watched?
BC Crazy replied to mixeduppup's topic in General Dog Discussion
Happens to me too MUP :) I go to look out of my rear view mirror & all I see is 2 very cute black & white faces looking straight back at me LOL. -
Yes Im dreading the stormy weather as well. The storm hit here at around 2 this morning . I wasn't prepared & was racing around to find Stella's thunder shirt & meds. She was a mess. Poor girl. I sat with her until it passed. Very bad thunder/lightening. Stella was trembling & she cries out. She also tries to run just after each clap of thunder. She is crated so I worry she will injure herself as she is mentally in an almost trance like state. She bashes & crashes around. I hope as she gets older her anxiety/fear issues don't get any worse. She is pretty bad as it is

Where do I get Faxseed oil from? I looked today in Coles, but couldn't find it. I buy it online at natural pet store or vetnpet direct. You wont find it in a supermarket :)

That's the trouble isn't it. They are just sooo darn cute. I can only stay cranky at either of mine for half a second then I tell them how beautiful they are & cuddle them too bits Don't worry they know it though too

So glad to hear she is catching on cassieturner. I usually go high end with the reward treats though, something like grated cheese or little pieces of chicken. If I tried to treat mine with dry food they would be like, "is that the best you can do" BTW She is very cute :)

14 Year Old Pom In Hawkesbury

How the hell can people do this to their poor animals.... Just dispose of them like they are a piece of trash I don't go on holidays with out my 2. I know I would just worry myself sick the whole time about them if I did. So we just take. They have so much fun cause we caravan lots. They love it. That poor little pommie, no teeth so dam sad. -
Exactly what I was saying in a nutshell TheLBD only I use the "leave it" command. I ask either of my guys to leave it no matter how "treasured" it may be & they drop it or actually give the forbidden to me in my hand. If it isn' t life threatening they get it back pronto :) plus treats.

Poor sweet old girl -
Empty milk bottles minus their top are the biggest hit here. I leave a dribble of milk in them so my guys flip straight on their backs & hold the bottle with their feet to get all the milk out. Then it's game on pushing it around with their noses & going loonie :)

My female Border Collie was a fierce resource guarder when I first got her at 12 weeks old. She was a shocker.... only with raw food like her prized chicken wing. Anything in her food bowl she was fine with. The first wing I gave her as soon as I put it on the lawn, she stuffed the whole thing straight into her mouth so I went to see if she was OK with it & I couldn't get within 10 feet of her. She barred her teeth, ears flat to her head & growled She meant business, big time. I'd never seen anything like it especially in one so young. She would charge at me to make me back away. She scared the life out of me in all honesty. What I did with Stella is I cut the chicken wing up into pieces & I'd go out & give her a say 2 small pieces then walk away a bit, then approach again & give her more & so on so as she connected me approaching her to give her something more. Not take her treasured wing from her. This took time but gradually she started to improve. I also taught her the command "leave it". So as time went by I was able to give her a whole wing, walk away then approach her & ask her to leave it & she would straight away. Then I instantly would give it back to her plus some bonus treats & leave her in peace to eat her wing. I have never had a drama since & she is 2.5 now :) This method worked for us. I never believed in patting them while they were eating as I think they should be able to eat in peace but I feel that if I need to I should be able to remove their food without fuss. My concern was with Stella when she was younger that she ate so quickly if she got a bone stuck I needed to be able to help her get it out with fear. IMHO CT & I am no expert.... with Lexie , Don't touch her food bowl while she is eating , she may bite you. A growl is a well mannered dog warning you. Bad mannered ones just bite. Now it seems she is now stressing about meal times which may increase the likely hood of her biting in fact. I would change up meals with her, maybe say give her breakie in a kong. Then approach her with a couple of 'high valued' treats & give them to her while she is eating then walk away. Then work form there with her. This will take time though. Sorry for the long winded post but thought I had to explain what worked for us. You have to get Lexie to see you being around at meal times a bonus not a threat. Good luck with her & keep us posted with your progress k :) Also would love to see a pic ???? I ignore any negative behaviour, growling etc praise anything positive.

Oh cute photo of Maple doing her very best impression of " the biggest loser" LOL.. She will get used to it. Don't fall for those gorgeous eye 's saying " I am starving, give me a pigs ear ". All thats on the treats menu are a piece of apple or carrot. LOL. Mashed pumpkin is a good low cal filler also :) Her weight loss will take time & you will have to be vigilant . But her long term health will benefit big time.

So when you put the lead on he freezes? If that is the case I'd put it on him just before meal times to ensure he is hungry but don't grab or pull it. Just let it dangle & get his favourite little treats or some of his meal. Get a very short distance away from him & call him to you. When he comes make a fuss. Good boy etc & treat him. Repeat this several times, a few times a day till he gets used to it. Don't leave it on him unsupervised. When he is OK with that then you can pick the end of the leash up, again with those wonderful treats in hand. Encourage him towards you remembering one step is success at this point. Remember don't pull or tug the leash or allow the leash to get taught. Always loose leash & encourage every positive step. You can also walk slowly backwards hanging on to leash & call him. Don't be surprised if he has a tanti & throws himself on the ground ( as my boy did) or goes backwards or lays down just ignore any bad behaviour & reward anything good. Remember your walking him not him you so if he dashes forward, turn slowly & encourage him to follow. Play his favourite game with him after a lesson lasting no longer than a couple of minutes at a time at his age. The have the attention span of a flea when they are little & will become bored & switch off quickly :)

Hello airlock & welcome :) Firstly good on you for adopting your boy I'm no expert airlock but there are plenty of folks that are a wealth of information & knowledge here. My thoughts are though that you haven't had him very long only a week you say. It will take him a while to settle in so you need to give him some time& he is still very much a baby at 3 months of age. Usually they gain confidence as they mature. Don't force him to much otherwise the opposite usually happens & they can become fearful. When you say terrified of leash walking, what exactly do you mean? He freezes when you put it on him? As for not being 'happy' playing with more than one person at a time. IMO that is perfectly normal. Both of my dogs have always played one on one. I think it is overwhelming for them to try & play any other way. 3 is a crowd  Is he upset/crying when you leave is he? Most puppies will cry/whine etc when left alone at first. I always leave them a Kong smeared with peanut butter or filled with a little mince or something like that. Make sure if you are crating him he has toileted previous & a bit tired can help as he will fall asleep comfortably while you are absent. Along with some safe toys etc to keep them occupied just before I leave. Hope I was of some help to you. Enjoy your new family member :) He's super cute.

I'm another Dancinbcs who can't understand why any Vet would put a totally stressed out dog through any "extra" tests than ones that are absolutely necessary. You get the visit over ASAP for the sake of the poor frightened dog. Clarabelle, I feel for you & poor Maple. Hope today everybody is feeling better & calmer. It is very scary when your dog reacts to the Vet this way but dogs that are frightened are unpredictable & will lash out in fear. My girl has actually bitten our Vet on the face She is a fearful girl at times & Vet visits are a nightmare for us & her. I muzzle her now for the Vets safety. She is a trembling mess before we even get into the Vets room. She has tried to jump through a closed window there to escape. Unturned chairs in the waiting room in sheer panic. So I can understand exactly how you felt yesterday. The first time Stella retaliated I was just so shocked I couldn't believe she would bite anyone but she did. It all happens very quickly. So don't feel bad. You are not alone. Some dogs are just timid/fearful. As for being very stand off ish afterwards that's just their way of coming down emotionally from a traumatic experience. So don't take it to heart. IMHO once you get some of the excess weight of Maple you will see a changed girl . She will be a lot more active im guessing. Poor dog is working very hard carrying all of that extra around. As I said my boy is 23 kg & only gets half a cup of dry food a day & 200g of home made Barf. 1 meaty raw bone mid morning. He gets lots of exercise as well. So Maple's previous owners haven't done her nor you any favours but she is in caring hands now :)
