Imagine this....you're a puppy, you've been with your Mum and littermates for 8 weeks, one day someone comes and takes you away from them and then when they move away from you or leave the room.....how are you going to feel? You need to ignore the yapping/barking and do some very short seperation with the pup and then increase it. Never look at the doh or interact with it when its' barking or whining. The very moment the pup is quiet return to it or open the crate and praise it. Have you read up on how to crate train a puppy? Have you spoken to your Breeder? Perhaps get some DAP spray from your Vet.

LOL ahhhh water restrictions?

We've just started using fly bates that are high up in the tree in the day pen, seems to be helping.

My Pedigree Great Dane had car sickness until he was about 8 months old. It's not that something is wrong with them perse' - just like some kids who get car sick - some dogs also get car sick and there are meds and behavioural methods on how to deal with it. You don't seem very supportive of your friends choice to get a Rescue Dog? You haven't been able to meet the dog? Why don't you drive to her to meet the dog? Been to the vets countless times? Then why hasn't the vet prescribed the new car sickness medication or suggested one of the many things people can try in this situation. You sound bitter.

Nup, there are no buts. You made a mistake, that simple. We all do, learn from it and do not leave the puppy unsupervised whilst inside your home again until it has outgrown the puppy stage and has proved it can be reliable. I'm taking a rough guess here that 10000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 sofas are ruined world wide by dogs every year.....so yeah don't be suprised. The dog can turn its' attention to anything that's why you can't leave them unsupervised when they're in this stage. -
natural canine behaviour.

I think it relates to your personal financial situation and also about being realistic about the dogs condition - somestime throwing money at a problem doesn't do anything positive. I think it's a very personal thing for a family to discuss and consult with their Vet about.

Behaviourist That Services Annerley Qld
sas replied to sas's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Do we have any DOL members who are Behaviourists in QLD or was that Melbourne? -
Hi! We have a case of a 2 year old desexed Great Dane with a pretty bad case of seperation anxiety. The Owner was trying to re-home the dog thinking they couldn't help her, apparantly she pulls pailings off fences. We are hoping to assist this owner with some sessions which of course we will pay for (we're not asking for freebes) to help them with a program that will hopefully mean they can keep their dog. Love to hear from you!

Your fault, you never ever leave a puppy unsupervised with free run of the house. If at any time you can not watch a puppy you need to put it in a pen or crate. Why so shocked? It's a puppy, they chew stuff. Next thing it will be your Sunglasses, Remote Control, Coffee table. Very simple solution....as per above....NEVER ever leave your puppy unsupervised with free fun of the house....it's like giving a toddler a can of paint and a brush and leaving them in the house when you go to work. That's just a joke eh, you don't believe the puppy can reason like that? -
With puppies, start as you mean to go on. So if you're happy having the GSD on your lap as an adult then go ahead and have the pup on your lap now

Dog parks are places where you should always be recalling your dog and interacting it, so if you have done food based training then yes imo you should definately have food and No don't feed other peoples dogs.
-
Don't flatter yourself. Dogs don't think like that - 3 months is a long time, when we re-home dogs they are well and truely settled into their new homes within that time.
-
I'd be getting a Behaviourist other than an 'Delta' one. Sometimes dogs need more than positive training to address aggression.
-
Well the hand should be the cue, however if you use the word 'target' you can apply this to anything.
-
When I've read training books on shaping, it says not to add any cue until the dog is performing the task consistency.
-
Of course not, unless you're a Peta supporter.

Ok if you think so. It makes no difference really, as you are going to get your wish and we will all see what happens. Maybe you see a future of perfectly healthy giant danes, all breed by great breeders following the magic breeding proticals (which will be set up to do away with all problems attributed to breeding to standards, extremes, show and purity). I hope you are right. People like you are not what the 'cause' needs. You choose to misinterpret what you wish because you only see your own point of view. I never said anything about perfectly healthy giant breeds - I'm not actually talking about my breed specifically I'm talking about all dogs. We have problems across all breeds - problems that can be addressed and worked towards however if we keep patting breeders on the back and saying there there it's ok, we won't ask you to be accountable nothing will get better.
-
Well to be fair, if you are going to have breeding decisions mandated and controlled by "experts" then they will have to be accountable for what is produced. Can't have it both ways. Now to try to make more wishes come true. The first thing the experts will do when they take over the breeding of danes will be to reduce the size down to a non giant breed size, like a hunting type breed I would say. Next would be to fix the heart and cancer problems and you will know the answer to that better than I, but I do not think further screening would be seen as the way to tackle the problem. So your dane will not be much of a dane, but this should take care of some of the genetic and conformation problems you want addressed. What a cop out.
