  1. You mean misusing it. Someone has been carefully studying corporate motivational gobbledegook. I have mixed feelings about what is happening at Petrescue. They certainly do provide a service, a good one. And they provide it to both rescuers and adopters free of charge. I have absolutely zero qualms about them raising funds to continue to do that, or to extend or improve those services. But I admit to being somewhat afraid that they will abuse their own hard earned reputation by becoming one of the big money hungry charities that become so top heavy that they lose sight of their original goal. Donation gathering ability is highly prized in the charity executive employee resume as is the establishment of expensive projects. Not saying that that is the case here, but there have been so many changes lately, and it is not always clear to me how those changes are going to improve things for pets or adopters or rescuers. Spot on, the new guy is all that and more.
  2. Me too! It's totally meme worthy. LOL
  3. I love Joint Performance. And a course of Cartrophen.
  4. I'm not sure what you mean but I'm staying well away from participating in the pound program discussion because I think my feelings on the matter of home visits, assessment and quarantine as well as lifetime support and a return policy are viewed as fairly militant. But also because I get sick of having the Winograd way preached at me like I'm some kind of fossil who wants dogs to die. Somewhere I did hint that the listing of photos and taking donations for dogs you don't actually touch was familiar, but it wasn't taken up by anyone.
  5. It was coming from a long way off and I don't understand why so many people didn't want to see it. PR are in it for themselves, not us. Not anymore. We work for them. And when this system goes through we may as well be out in the street shaking a donation tin for them. Get ready people. eta related threads http://www.dolforums...social-profile/ http://www.dolforums...s-on-petrescue/ http://www.dolforums...d-dog-campaign/ http://www.dolforums...g-at-petrescue/ http://www.dolforums...l-to-petrescue/
  6. I doubt it. Only about 50% of dogs in this country are registered, vaccinated or microchipped. What on earth makes people think that a law (which won't be resourced for enforcement) will make an ounce of difference to people who don't obey the laws now. It will penalise responsible people and their dogs and do SFA to stem the flow into pounds I'd say. Time will tell. I hope people don't get stuck on sentence 1 If it only dents number slightly at first then that still counts. Just 5% would be huge!
  7. It will cut down on the amount of unwanted pups. Rural pounds in particular, dependant on area - certain breeds are over represented in impound and euthanasia rates. All have med-large litters and are so easy to come by that when you don't want one anymore you just get rid of it and get another later. Or get rid of the whole lot incl mum, and keep one pup. I'm referring to bull arab and pigging types, stag types, camp dogs, working breed crosses, staffy crosses. No idea how they are going to police it though. If it's anything like microchipping then the same dogs I refer to aren't chipped either. I forgot to add that the populations of these dogs are a harbour for parvo and heartworm. Parvo regularly sweeping through towns and pounds with litters as they are sold through the community or end up left at the pound gate. Sorry but as usual govt steps with harsh reform because they don't enforce existing legislation and people won't take up the opportunity for low cost desexing.
  8. Interesting. Strong possibility due to the location of the pond. Another pooch is under the weather today too so we'll be looking at removing the pond and putting the fish in a tank. Its a free standing pond and a pain to clean easily anyway. Yes it's a funny, hidden kind of thing. Not something that leaps to mind but I do a cleanout before the cold sets in. The tadpoles and pond plants keep growth under control during warm months. There was a massive die-off of blue green algae in the park wetland a few years ago and it was bad enough to hospitalise dogs!
  9. Oh that's about the only time I get to see pedigree dogs up close! ...... Except the easter show but it's rude to harass the poor tired looking people who have been there all day so I stay at a distance.
  10. I have two dogs in a new home that travel between NSW and Qld. What's the most reliable (national?) database for this pair? 99% of our dogs are NSW/ACT, maybe I should put everyone on a national database as well?
  11. I get yearly intranasal. The seniors and immune compromised are too vulnerable. Purdie, I'm so sorry about your little dog
  12. An FYI. An algae die-off like you can get in winter when the sun isn't enough to keep it growing can cause a bad tummy if they drink it. Not just ponds but funny little places like the dishes under pot plants. Boggy spots, that kind of thing. Usually a bit of algae in water dishes isn't there long enough to die off. I forgot to add. Farex is good if they won't eat regular rice.
  13. Just a suggestion, they could stop selling their rejects to backyard breeders and puppy farmers. I speak to a lot of people who believe that pedigree dogs are inherently sick so they fall for the people who don't breed as pedigree (papered ANKC). One 'rescuer' currently breeds a small fortune worth of brachy she got as registered breeder rejects and people line up to get a popular breed they believe are healthier because they aren't 'show dogs'. It disturbs me to think that people believe handing pet ownership over to rescue and welfare is the solution. We squawk about regulations but can't even regulate ourselves. Off topic slightly. Sorry. But some registered breeders are busily undoing generations of work, same as some within the greyhound industry brought about it's end in NSW.
  14. I had no idea that was even possible!! They are referring to people as 'registered greyhound owners' but it's in name only which is really really unsettling. ????
  15. to no-one in particular; Maybe try to explain why Companion Animal and Caretakership is objectionable to you. It may actually help the student instead of making her feel like an idiot for asking. I've never heard of the word 'Caretakership' it seems totally made up and not really what animals need in terms of proper care. Not trying to be mean but they aren't equals and we shouldn't rob them of their identity as animals by making them helpless little humans. 'Companion Animal' is well and truly here as a definition, even in legislation eg The NSW Companion Animal Act 1998. I use the term as a reference i.e all pets, but not in relation to my own pets sitting next to me if that makes sense.
  16. Thanks RP. That would be lovely if you would gift them to us Caz. Anna c/o SSR PO Box 3026 Marrickville Metro NSW 2204
  17. This is a new communications system that will be able to track our contacts with people and the number of inquiries we decline or accept or don't respond to. As well as a more efficient way of them so sign up their donors. I feel like nobody wants to believe that just maybe things aren't as all sunshine and roses as they look. Just watch and see. http://www.dolforums.com.au/topic/267081-pet-rescues-new-comm-system-explained/

  19. Yes that's how I understand it too. I know the large shelters cop a shellacking for euth rates but I have seen the consequences of some dogs adopted out that should NEVER have left - misery for dogs and owners alike. That's is what it's supposed to mean but it gets taken literally by the public and rescuers alike.
  20. I don't know. It's easy to say but how do you do it to a heathy dog who I assume believes she is at home and as far as she is concerned, has a whole lot of owners (might not be the best word). A kennel full of volunteers and staff who love her and spend time with her to make sure she is happy. I don't know. At what specific moment do you decide?
  21. From the other thread. Just adding that from what I saw the big dogs had a LOT of work put into them by staff and volunteers so please give them some credit for caring. Walking, playing, training, fussing, rolling around in the grass with them, getting covered in slobber. Sorry. Don't buy a lot of what's being said on the other thread. Sounds like a steaming pile to me. She has no reason to lie and was never close mates with the rescue owner. And I was out there on an off for the first few years as a weekend vol. One thing I can say is that Jules the neo wasn't in there 8 years. That would have mean she arrived not long after it opened. So think to yourself; how much more has been exaggerated or made up out of thin air. On a quick skim I could see some bizarre claims and plenty of fake rescue profiles being dusted off for the occasion. Great promo for the business owner who went out to take the photos though. I don't agree with lengthy kennelling at all. And the effects of institutionalisation can be devastating but I'm not expert enough or spent any time with the dogs in question to say what they were feeling. 99% of the time I was with the small dogs. The quarantine section was literally life saving for some dogs I rescued because with seniors at home we couldn't risk illness coming in and wouldn't have been able to rescue them without 2 - 3 weeks grace. & Ironically now the rescue has been moved out it will again be home to breeding dogs, for however many years they produce popular breed pups and nobody is making noise about that. Sometimes I wonder if Jules' family was born out there when their dogues and neos were being sold. Old customers of the place used to come into the office confused, expecting to be able to pick up a new pup from the display pens.
