  1. Finally! Yes I've signed up. :) No reason not to take up a new place to list our rescues. Do our PetRescues still show up in Trading Post or was that ages ago?
  2. OMG I remember now! Those big bucks are worse than a tomcat.
  3. Great link DobieMum NDN is great for low income and pensioners, who normally wouldn't be able to afford desexing. I wish more people would take up the offer for their cats. The stream in pounds and free to good home is immense and far beyond what rescue can cope with. There is also DABS and IMHO if you can prevent unwanted litters being born that helps rescue and the community in the long run.
  4. Terriers can be fine with their own cats particularly if everyone is lazing around, but it's the chase that is hard to resist. If your cats need a safe haven pop a baby gate on a room and have their stuff in there.
  5. No problem. And no, authorities don't officially define 'good rescue' ... I guess apart from giving rspca and awl powers of enforcement.(?) For fundraising purposes all you need is a licence issued by NSW Fair Trading. You can go one better and add tax deductibility which is a more complex process. These are all dealt with through ACNC, ATO and Fair Trading. All independent of what exactly you are raising money for as long as you fit into a non-profit, charitable organisation framework and functions as dictated by law. And do your yearly audit of course. To call yourself non-profit and ask for any items or money donated to you without your basic Fair Trading permit is illegal in NSW. Something you should take note of when donating anywhere, it's become a common thing with the advent of social media. Weirdly, a rescue that breeds from pound dogs is breaking no law. Go figure.
  6. Thanks for the reminder! We've only had one encounter with this plant and it's such a common, benign looking decorative shrub you'd never guess! Glad your guys are ok. :) One of our volunteers got this done last night as a card for FB. She hadn't heard of it either. My link
  7. Here's some general answers to the best of my knowledge. I'm only talking NSW, my knowledge of other states is sketchy. This is in no way directed at anyone in particular. Merely an FYI because nobody has answered. I think you'll find that even things like grooming and training are not regulated and enforcement can be arbitrary. Note; Rescues own their animals just like you do. And may keep, sell, give away or euthanise as any normal owner can. Rescuers may also buy animals. Or accept surrendered pets (chipped and registered and/or Stat Dec of relinquishing ownership). All animal owners refer to; Companion Animal Act and POCTAA Additionally there is the 16D which is the agreement under which pets are released from pounds to rescue. Council pounds may add extra agreements. Rescue dogs & cats must be lifetime registered after 12 months in care. 16D is subject to yearly reporting and 5 yearly renewal. Animals in Commercial boarding kennels are under the mandatory Code Animal related activities are often initially actioned by council rangers who will call in authorities; rspca, awl or police if applicable per the above Acts and at their discretion. Members of the public may raise complaints to council or above authorities if they conflict with the Acts. For rangers; local council bylaws and the above Acts may cover aspects of interest such as environmental pollution complaints (barking etc), nuisance orders and dangerous dogs, kennels, shelters, backyard breeders (registration and microchipping), registered breeders (registration and microchipping), zoning, livestock in urban areas etc Local council bylaws can be contested if they conflict with state or federal laws. Cats can be declared nuisance only in certain circumstances but are otherwise allowed to roam except under curfew. Greyhounds must be muzzled in public unless they have passed the Greenhound program. All dogs and cats must be microchipped and lifetime registered. Vaccination and/or desexing is not mandatory in NSW. NSW has no limit on number of pets an individual may own. As long as standards of care, state, federal and local council bylaws bring no formal action against the owner. RSPCA knowledge base answers general FAQ's. For hoarding studies refer to U.S. Tufts University If you see someone try to re-home an animal they found (chipped or not), it is illegal and the animal must be presented to the pound or ranger. I'd be very careful 'naming and shaming' (common on FB) as this entitles individuals, businesses and charities to litigation if they have a case such as proven loss of income and can afford to stop you. edited to fix formatting!
  8. Mum found an awesome couple of house sitters through this site. :) :) https://www.happyhousesitters.com.au/ You can request a police check, ask for references and do contracts if you choose to.
  9. As above and less rich treats, especially liver. Poo eating I know. Gross. There's a couple of old wives remedies like a bit of pineapple or brewers yeast on their food which is no help to you now with an upset tummy! And some of it is just puppy stuff, their Mum's do it for them. Occasionally females do it as a maternal thing. Then they want to kiss you. lol. (oh I just had a thought. She may have eaten a nasty poo in the park. Regardless, vet visit has to happen anyway)
  10. "Normal" rescue depends on the definition. If you are of the mindset that No Kill means anything is better than being dead, then a dog stored indefinitely is a normal fact of life. And if a rescue were to put down this dog the hail of bullets from the sidelines would shock you! Edited because I'm repeating myself! Post #10
  11. Hetty it's not safe for a 4 month old at an off leash. Especially the Canal Rd at Leichhardt and Sydney Park. I'm assuming you're in the area? If you really need to do a bit of training on your own outside you might be able to get some quiet time at the part time off-leash (fully fenced) park behind Edgeware Rd Tafe. You can also get a quiet bench under the trees and sit him on your lap to watch the others do dog stuff.
  12. A vet explained to me ages ago after an osteo surgery that limping can sometimes become a habit after the actual pain is gone. That's not a lot of help to you and I can't give you proof but apparently it can be more in their mind than physical. A result of looking after that limb while it heals.
  13. FYI New membership conditions. For anyone who got the e-news today about the changes to your membership and might have forgotten what you agreed to at the start. I have a copy of the old one saved from ages ago (below). Pointing out a significant change Not that anything was ever followed up anyway. I hear whispers of a new system coming soon. ;) More info as it comes to hand. FYI old membership conditions
  14. Wow! I have always heard never to touch marrow bones! Interesting... Yeh I can't use and bones with the fatty marrow. It's tempting pancreatitis and makes a lot of my guys vomit. I can only use meaty bones, trimmed of fat either with no access to marrow or with that red honeycomb marrow.
  15. Now you're just getting condescending. I suggest as someone who has other things to do that don't involve rescuing, your time would be better spent elsewhere than perpetually going around in circles. I didn't mean to be condescending please accept my apologies if that's how I sounded and thank you for your rather rude advice but for your information much of what we do does involve rescue and it certainly does involve understanding current issues which affect our rescue and foster carer members. For the record On a daily basis part of what I do involves rescue including looking after the rescue dogs I have here and speaking to and meeting with hundreds of people involved in rescue and foster care each year. I am fully aware of what you do.

  17. Thank you Malti. Apparently I'm one of the last rescuers to bother posting on Dol regularly anymore so it sounds like I'm alone in this but offline .... not so much.
  18. It's called sarcasm. And see how absurd it is to say $10 when PR are asking for $500 to make a Tinder app and $1000 to to run a Matchmaker's Project and nobody raises an eyebrow? We're not supposed to say anything because we get it for free. Free free free. We are doing them a favour and I've no idea why nobody can see that. Where would Pet Rescue be without the groups who do the work? We have value despite the majority of groups not being able to 'remunerate' ourselves does that make us worthless and without right to question an organisation that represents us? You aren't liquid right now. Tell me how much closer to your goal you would get if Team Dog was stuck working under PR as it's being run now. And the Safe n Sound Pounds program was a $60,000 publicly funded project that has been taken up by 8 pounds at last count. & More pounds use facebook to list their dogs than their PR accounts. As above from the horse's mouth. Profit needs to be sourced elsewhere.
  19. Most people don't see it as sourcing income off the backs of rescue. They provide a legitimate service for rescue groups giving them access to free advertising, resources, putting a higher focus on rescue generally and they provide a good resource for people who want to find a rescue dog. They don't charge for rescue to use their website ,their forms or other resources etc but do ask for donations from those who think the service they provide is worthy of receiving a donation to help pay for running costs required for being able to produce the service as well as and as effectively as they have. They could do just as well by working less outside of the website provision as that is where most of the income is coming from and they could easily have set up as a private business and simply taken all of the profits for themselves. The money they put back into projects and promotion of rescue etc is voluntary and a massive amount of full time and part time work and its the rescue world which have 100% been the beneficiaries of that. The only difference is that donations over $2 would not be tax deductible. Most websites actually provide a free advertising service for a short time until they build their presence and website profile and then charge those who want to continue using their services. These guys haven't done that . Foster Carers They provide lots of articles in their library for anyone considering foster caring and any search for foster carer takes you to their website. For a lot of people thinking about having a go its the first port of call. From their website. How do I get started? Go to PetRescue.com.au, select Dog, Cat or Other Pets, select size and state, then click 'Show advanced search' and select 'Pets looking for foster care'. If you find a pet you'd like to enquire about and offer your services as a foster carer, click the 'Enquire about this pet' button at the top of the pet's profile, or scroll to the bottom of the profile page to find the contact details of the rescue group caring for the pet. Alternatively, contact [email protected] and we'll help connect you with a rescue group in your area. We've also launched our Workplace Foster Care Program, to encourage Australian businesses to unleash the life-saving power of the workplace. For all the info you need to convince your staff or boss that this is a pawsitively brilliant idea for your business, download the FREE guide to our Workplace Foster Care Program here. Except we are getting charged. And your 'most people' are exactly the ones who believe that by giving to them, it goes to a rescue. In every donation they ask for, they are making money from us. We do the hard work and with our work we drive traffic to their site. They use those stats - membership - carers - adoptions to either a) boost rescue in the eyes of the public and provide much needed services or b) grow into what could potentially be the single biggest drain on already shoestring rescues. PR doesn't pay our bills. They help me advertise a dog for $450 that cost us $5000. And believe me, now that there's more rescues there is a lot less to go around. Using the exact points you make; we could be charged. They do pro-active stuff etc which isn't in question (but only some members can benefit from things like workplace foster care and adoption days.); I just don't believe they need to be using methods that are a constant drain on the finite donations available by asking for more and more and more. How about we get paid $10 a listing when we are the ones bringing in their donations? They have at their disposal, the profile and known brand to hit up others for funds like corporations and grants. If they have no grants income then why?? It's easier to use the generous and trusting audience they already have. Take a look at their facebook page to see the confusion. Or ask rescuers what this is doing to us as the brand grows. Do you work for Pet Rescue? - No Are you Pet Rescue volunteers? - No Did Pet Rescue give you the dog to sell? - No Are you paid by Pet Rescue? - No What group? I adopted my dog from Pet Rescue. - No Why haven't you replied to me? - Because you must have contacted someone else. It's constant and not the fault of the public because the public see a message that could be taken in more that one way when they don't process the existing arrangement. People believe Pet Rescue are the rescue. I feel SSR is pretty well branded when it comes to pointing out an independent rescue. People do have to come from PR to our site to see the full profiles and click through to apply but we've had so many applications giving a list of names (of dogs) that aren't ours, we've been forced to amend the form into check-boxes with only OUR dogs listed. Of course, it's all nicely worded on their site that they only help. Then have their hand out for money to help, which you can see by their financials is above and beyond what they need to provide the services rescues receive and not ploughed back in. I will be able to point this out clearly when the 2016 - 2017 financials are in. I see where you're coming from but it's frustrating to know that this was coming and I'm trying to get through to people the fact that the press doesn't match what is happening on the ground.
  20. Holy hell. I don't know what the answer is I'm just so so sorry. Maddy has given some great advice and I would go with her advice as a rescue who has rehomed large breeds (Greyhounds) with a prey drive that needs proper assessment and management as well as having muzzling laws on top of that. There is a lot of No Kill stuff around that is misinterpreted as; anything is better than dying in the pound. Cold hard truth is that not all dogs should be adopted out. Next time I would go local or as close as practical to go and meet, play with, walk the dog and keep in close contact with the carer. Find a carer (like ours LOL) who can't shut up about their dogs and will tell you the good, bad and norty. I'd also make sure there has been a settling period in care of at least a month because dogs can take a while to show their nature.
  21. Interesting. So why can't they try harder to source income from anywhere other than off the backs of our rescues? No idea how they claim Foster Carer Signups in their stats they have literally nothing to do with carers signing up (unless someone can correct me) except for just being there as the brand.
  22. I find dog socks are pretty good, just put two on and vet-wrap if they aren't staying. For dogs where you can't risk a slide I used to have an instruction thing but basically two long socks (or sew one sock into two lengths) put them on like tights, they will reach up the legs and with a trim and adjustment you tie them behind the shoulder blades. You could put an extra sock for the dragging foot. (sorry if that makes no sense, I can't find a photo but they are pretty fast to make)
  23. Sorry in advance, this isn't an interrogation. Are you resting him or is he still working? Are you rugging him in the cold? Is he desexed? How old is he? What are you feeding already? What is his coat and skin like? eg dry, flaky, dull, scabby, itchy, thin, moth-eaten, brittle ... (This could also be a good thread for Perse to see?)
  24. T, as you probably know I've had the most f'd up month and shouldn't really be letting this get to me but when I think of the effort and heartbreak we go through and see it used as a tool to boost a brand name's income it it is too much.
