I was wondering why the lab had got to such a bad state with it's wrist? I may have missed a bit that said why it had gone so far without treatment. The equipment was simply amazing. westiemum Posted January 6, 2011 Share Posted January 6, 2011 Yep wonderful stuff - and the cat taking off straight after surgery and the vets comments that this otherwise would have been a lovely life 'snuffed out' made me cry! Can't wait for next week. It also got me thinking - would I do it for my animals if I had to take them to the UK? You bet I would! In a heartbeat. The owner said she walks them 5km a day and swimming in the afternoon - perhaps too much for an old dog with arthritis (and we know dogs often wont stop and will overdo it). Little Gifts Posted January 7, 2011 Share Posted January 7, 2011 When I first heard about this cat I thought things had gone too far but after watching that vet last night I am in awe of him and would work by his side (or in his bed) anyday! I think he is just one of those super intelligent but compassionate people who thinks outside the square without losing sight of the morality or ethics or whatever you want to call it of his profession and his patients. Just amazing stuff and I feel the sky is the limit for what he can perceive and make happen for some animals. He seems to genuinly love his patients and have their best interests at heart. Oh and I love how there was no direct to the camera dramatics a la Bondi Vet like "if I don't do this surgery immediately this dog is going to be in real trouble!" No shit Sherlock! Why cant we have a crazy passionate Australian vet that truly wants to make a difference, rather than a surfy vet from Bondi that has no clue on education and making a difference! Ive never seen Bondi vet so dont know the difference but I also liked his down to earth attitude when telling the lab lady to say goodbye etc. and how he worded it etc. No hysterics or promises or anything, just plain truth. It seemed to help her a lot, she knew he would do his best and if things were not in the best interests of the dog he told her exactly what the outcome would be. zenchel Posted January 7, 2011 Share Posted January 7, 2011 Maybe my age brings on cynicism rather than hormonal tsunamis, but I was really not happy with the Lab's treatment. I thought the cat story was wonderful, however imo the Lab was destined for many more years of pain - his left elbow was a disaster (arthrosis the size of a tennis ball) and I believe his hips were also cactus - severe muscle wastage. I got very tired of hearing the vet say "this is the first time in the world this has been done". The areas on the dog's hips may have been evidence of pain relief patches, don't know. There are similarly passionate specialist vets here in Melbourne - one who shall be nameless with an ego so big that it's difficult to fit him, yourself and your dog in the consulting room, and then there's Sam Snelling - he actually rang me up while my dog was on the table to tell me he thought he couldn't help her - so many others would think of the $3K that he would make if he did the op, but he knew that the best thing was for her to have peace - that to me is "hot" ;) Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
