I wouldn't DNA test without being 100% the results will come back in your favour

The dog looks RR cross so just register as such,

I would guarantee if that dog was found vets/pounds & the likes would all say RR cross

Whatever mix or "conformation" your dog is, it sure is a cutie... *grin*

Have it registered as a Staffy X or the like and just make sure it is well socialised with everyone and everything, and you shouldn't have any issues...

 My family got a dog from a registered breeder and despite asking a few times for the dog's papers they were never supplied. Dog looks only vaguely like the breed it is meant to be. We always said the dog is the breed we thought we were buying. It seems fair to give the breeder the benefit of the doubt. It doesn't really matter, and given there is no way to tell we just accept that to the best of our knowledge the dog is what it is claimed to be.

Well i must say i appreciate all those who answered my question directly. To those who could not help but lecture me on the ins and outs of buying with papers, thank you also, you have merely reiterated what i already knew.

To those who think i was ripped off, the purchase was not based on assumption. I knew what i was getting.

What im trying to investigate is what he could have in him just so i know. And to be perfectly honest i know little about pure bread staffs, or even pure bread dogs for that matter. Pure bread to me is a staff that looks like most other staffs. But as some people have pointed out it also has plenty to do with fur texture, length, stance etc, something which i did not know.

I do see features that are common with other staffys but then again some are not, mainly the length of his snout. As for zeus, im glad some people have mentioned that he is cross. I definitely felt that way myself, although if you see him in real life you will be blown away by his physique, that was him at 5 months. But i definitely think his ears and and mouth are a dead giveaway.

Thanks to all, i appreciate it. I would like to know more about purebred features if someone could help me.

Regards

It won't matter what he's registered as. If he's spotted by a ranger he's in danger of being declared a restricted breed. Councils are well aware that people register dogs as something else to avoid restricted breed rules. I would hazard a guess that a RR cross registration could well be flagged as a possible pitbull and still come under attention.

I would encourage people who own dogs like this to register as what they believe they are - ie Amstaff or Amstaff x and seek a formal breed assessment if required. Fraught with danger yes, but so is trying to fly under the radar.

I agree totally Alyosha, but I honestly think he does look RR X, more than an Am Staff X..... IT's not just a matter of flying under the radar here on this one

That is true i was looking at some pictures and i find it hard to find resemblance, apart from the colour.

Also thank you for that breed standard guide it was very helpful. In fact the only thing i could not match was the snout length as it stipulates medium but i personally think his is medium to long.

As far as the standard goes, he's not typical of the breed, infact it's questionable if he's even an Amstaff.

I must be having trouble comparing. Maybe because i cant liken him to any other breed. To be honest when he straight with ears pricked forward i am blown away by his look but i cant seem to find a suitable breed for comparison.

Not sure I'm understanding you properly, but it could be you can't liken him to any other breed because he's a multi breed cross so won't look anything like any particular breed at all.

What I mean is that just for agruments sake say his dam is a pure bred Amstaff and his sire is a Labrador x Staffordshire Bull Terrier - he won't come out looking 1/2 Amstaff, 1/4 Labrador and 1/4 Stafford. Genetics doesn't work like that!

A mixed breed (more than 2 breeds) or even just a cross breed (2 breeds) dog can often look nothing at all like any of the breeds that have gone in to his makeup.

A friend of mine had a Boxer x Bull Terrier - both parents were purebred. The dog they had looked all for all the world like a badly bred Labrador and nothing at all like a Boxer or a Bull Terrier.

You can't be certain the the Amstaff was the father of your pup,or he may have fathered some of the pups in the litter and others had a different father.Did you see all the pups from the litter?Where there any other dogs around on the property?.Like i said earlier he looks near identical to the staffy x red heeler i had years ago;but really with crosses they may not look anything like either parent.

I may be misunderstanding the birds and the bees here - but I'm pretty certain all dogs in a litter have the same father.
