  1. My vet suggested feeding more often instead of bigger meals -- it's hard to get our boy out of bed for breakfast, he's a fussy eater and doesn't like to get up early.
  2. hmm, I wonder if you could do up a make shift one of your own and test it
  3. Minders, who we were minding for a year, was spot on for dinner time! Unfortunately dinner time is varied in this house, but always follows my shower so around 7-:30-8pm, she used to get fed at 5pm. She'd sit on the bathmat whinging at me to feed her LOL A lot of the dogs I mind are clearly on early morning routines - especially those with babies at home, but there is one dog I mind from some DINKS and I've said to them 'you must wake up at 6am' and they are baffled because they don't, but that's the time their dog wakes me up. Our dog knows when ~6pm is, which is when I usually get home and walk them so on weekends he will hang around and whinge and beg (the begging trick - flapping his arms around) for walkies.
  4. oh a year where nothing happens - $0 vet costs, but then a few hundred on wormers.
  5. We have gone through similar with our rescue (a 5 year old shihtzu x) - and it took over 6 months (knock on wood) you've got to set them up for success. Keep to a routine just like if they were a baby puppy - wee run first thing in the morning, after they wake up from a nap, first thing when you get home from work (although our dog would wee from excitement of us being home too..), after dinner, before bed. I agree with others - allow her access to the house but keep it confined to a smaller area on rainy days or at first, maybe just the laundry. We were able to give access to the laundry and tiled hallway and main bathroom when we first got our dog. This was important as the other two dogs were inside dogs and shouldn't be 'punished' because of the new one. Our rescue also hated getting her feet wet and we learnt to be extra vigilant in rainy weather - fortunately we have a large covered outdoor deck with garden areas and the older dogs would wee in those gardens during the rain so we encouraged her to go in those spaces as well - carrying her to the covered gardens and commanding her to wee (lots of treats and praise). In the rain we really have to watch her, if we are all chilling out and she gets up we immediately take her outside because sometimes she's just snuck out of the room and weed on a rug. Sometimes I'd be cooking and turn around and she would have weed on the rug. It's frustrating, but you've only yourself to blame for not watching her - I think I only caught her in the act once and managed to whisk her mid stream outside, but when I miss it I just have to clean it up and not say anything to her - my husband got mad at her once and she rolled over and peed all over herself and rolled in it more so he learnt to stop doing that because he had twice as much mess and a dog to bath
  6. My GSD was bathed every 4-6 weeks, helped that I was grooming and could use the large baths and dryers He'd get his nails done probably more regular than that and certainly after swimming because walking in the sand moves the quicks back. I would brush him weekly and wash all his bedding when he had a bath. The Malt xs seem to get baths pretty frequently maybe every 2-3 weeks? I think because they are white we can see the dirt more AND they love to roll around and get filthy. They will get a face and bum trim at this time as well. I brush them weekly and their bedding probably gets washed every 2nd bath. I've never really had to clean any of their ears, but sometimes if I'm bored I'll give them a wipe. eta: they get their heartworm and wormers on the first of the month
  7. Our Malt X does the same - in the corner of his pull out couch bed - we call it 'showing off' he'll sometimes do it on his other bed or a couch too He doesn't dig outside, but he loves to roll in dirt and hay, ugh!
  8. I love it when they bury their food/toy with 'air' and then it's just out there sitting on a cushion even though they spent 10min 'burying' it, hahahah never noticed a sex difference, just a individual difference
  9. Yeah, you don't really need to clip them and I would have been SO angry with the groomer too! It might be the clipping that has contributed to his matting as it does change the coat a bit (my GSD was shaved for surgery and there was a difference in his coat when it grew back) If it's just one dread you can cut it apart lengthwise and comb out smaller sections. If it's too close to the skin it might need to be clipped off, but a good groomer can do that so that it's hidden amongst the rest of the coat and not too obvious.
  10. Yup, get a silicone based conditioner (even pantene...) and put it in a spray bottle and squirt it on him before combing through and after. I have to say 20min daily on each leg seems excessive - do you use a comb? Some people don't agree with brushing wet hair, but it's a dog's bum...
  11. I reckon if you ring up and ask them if you can wait while the dog is done they can give you a time where they can get a wash done pretty quickly and then you don't have to worry - I don't know what breed you have. We used to groom an ancient dog and I always wanted her owners to stay because we did her straight away to get her out of there in case she carked it! And then we had owners travel interstate to see us so we did their 3 dogs first thing so they could get back home. I think if you can feel that the groomer is being accommodating that's a good sign
  12. We adopted a 5 year old dog around 6 months ago and she's still settling in - I sometimes feel that the dogs I mind for money have settled in faster than her, but she has had a troubled background. She doesn't feel like mine yet mainly because she'll go with and ignore strangers just as as much as she does me LOL *MY* dog that I had from a puppy only had eyes for me. Even just last night I felt she regressed as she got very grumbly, but that could be because she had to endure a bath during a thunderstorm, she was certainly in a mood.
  13. my dental practice sends reminders for 6 monthly visits when my actual dentist tells me to only come in every 12 months.. they must like wasting paper and stamps.
  14. yup get him checked out my boy would wee in his sleep when he was on heart med diuretics and I mind a lab that dribbles occasionally - he does go on meds for it
  15. I saw this on FB, I wonder if they are vaccinated....

    what a lovely old man
  17. How sad for you and your pup It looks like you were ready to commit to a dog from the beginning and having it taken away from you is so awful, but you were still prepared to have a dog for years so I wouldn't worry what other people think and just get a 2nd dog when you are ready.
  18. ^ Yup, I love to use a zoomgroom in the bath on dogs with coats like Labs both for the shampoo and then for the conditioner soaking time - HEAPS of hair falls out. Then a good blow dry Aldi were selling cheapie furminators and I thought about getting one for the Lab I regularly mind, but I never thought they did more than a good bath would
