  1. Anna has been up and down in the last few months, but now she is showing signs of dementia and her tummy is very swollen. So I made an appointment for her at the vets for tomorrow. She has been giving me that look for the last few days and has been removing herself from the other dogs for a few weeks now. So its her time. I promised her I wouldn't let her suffer, so tomorrow is my last day with her. I love her so much and it isn't fair, Ive only had her for under three years. I was looking forward to having her grow old gently with me. But that is not to be.
  2. I thought Id tell you that I have made an appointment for Anna tomorrow, she is much worse and is showing major signs of dementia. So I am giving her wings tomorrow Its going to be a hard day for me. She has been fighting hard but is giving me that look of Im tired now. I promised her I wouldn't let her suffer.
  3. TSR baiting is always announced in local papers, on radios and on gates of properties.
  4. Pers When he sings the song of his people he is a wonder to hear. I love his voice, BUT if he is singing like that it means he has escaped and on a scent! So I don't hear it anymore (said with crossed fingers).
  5. What about a retired or failed show dog. They come with training and if you get maybe a two or three year old you don't have the puppy problems. There are always retiring mature dogs on the DOL Breed pages. If you look at it it this way all the hard work and puppy grief has been delt with if your lucky. My Anna who is a Basset Fauve de Bretegne came to me at 4 after her last litter. I couldn't have found a better dog. Another idea is a senior rescue they sound like hard work but they arnt really, all the ones I have had have been wonderful dogs. You could get a youngish senior. Then you can make all the mistakes people make with their first dog and it wont affect them. :D
  6. When I am felting I always play loud music, as soon as I put Nick Cave on all the dogs leave the room. They don't mind a bit of Bob or Ray Lamontagne. But that just don't like Nick.
  7. My old bloke Gilly has a bit of icecream now and then. He is 20 years old this april, has great teeth and is pretty healthy. So icecream hasn't killed him yet.
  8. Look how happy he is. Don't worry Pers my lot don't have wonderful manners due to lack of traning. Cedro's voice changed a few months ago, he was 2 last August, he now has a deep big dog bark.
  9. If you have chooks you will have snakes, they come for the chicks, mice and rats and eggs and water. Snakes don't like to be out in the open so cleared areas around your home is the best thing to do. I have lived with many kinds of snakes, bitey and non bitey. Most just go on their way, but in mating seasons they can travel a long way, which brings them in contact with people. I had a foster JRT Loulou who went to live with my friend and her family out in the bush. She has been bitten twice, the second time a few months ago by a RBB. She has survived both times without antiv. Both times the snakes were near 'her' twin girls.
  10. Dog he looks like one of my seniors Blake, he died two years ago. Great clip.
  11. Anna is nearly back to sort of normal, she bailed up a lizard today. She is hungry as anything as well. But both Cedro and Gilly are protecting her they seem to know something isn't right. She is still on her steroids and I think I will take her back to the vets next week, to see where we go from here. She is week in her back legs and is having problems holding her wee. DDD Im sorry to read about your little od bloke, my Gilly is 20 this year and is getting more fragile. But he still zooms with Cedro in the afternoon! It usually takes the next day for him to recover!
  12. Basset Fauve de Bretagne is a mouthful as well. A small fawn hound from Brittany. I just tell people they are brown scruffy bassets, that are long and have short legs, with ears like a beagle. People look at me and say they are crossbreeds and laugh.
  13. No it isn't cruel at all, my dogs are always inside when Im not home. You could put an electric wire on your house fence, it will only take a few hits for him to realise its not worth it. Your doing the right thing for your dog and the sheep.
  14. I had a thread here talking about a bassetxLab he called them Bassadors. I had a major argument with the seller, what a nasty person he was. It looked a bit like a black fauve from a distance. Can you imagine that dog and the traits it will have. It made me angry to know a basset and a Lab were being used like that.
  15. Im going crazy, with Anna not well and peeing in the house every night. I need any suggestions of something I can use on polished wood. I take her out a few times a night but she still pees inside. My house is beginning to smell, other people cant smell it but I can! I have used bi-carb and vinegar and it has worked a bit but not a lot.
  16. I remember pretty well to the day when Cedro's bark came in, he was about 10 months old and he pissed his mother off because he wouldn't stop!
  17. When Bob and Molly died my home was so quiet with just Gilly. But now its noisy and I like that, I hate when Cedro escapes but to hear him sing when he is chasing a scent is wonderful. Ive seen vids of a pack of Fauves singing as they chased a scent its a wonderful sound. Different than normal dog barks. My Fauves have different barks for different things and a song always welcomes me when I come home. :D
  18. On our local Glen Innes sell/swap and buy someone is advertising BassetxLab pups for sale. Little black pups with Fauve like ears, short stumpy legs, people are going to love them. But they will grow to be ugly. Id say its maybe one of the Armidale puppy mills. Breaks my heart to think of a Basset in such a position.
  19. Dog they are lovely healthy dogs. The leads and collars are nice as well.
  20. You could also used teetree stuff I think you can buy it at Bunnings, its branches you attach to your fence untill your hedge grows. I put up a corrugated iron and lattice screen to stop my neighbours from hell. They had children that would tease my dogs through the fence! The people across the road used teetree on their wire fence to block out the highway noise and the dogs sight of the road.
  21. That was the vest direction, to try her on one every second day, but if she didn't react well to keep her on one a day.
  22. Its true my Gilly is 20! He brings me joy everyday of his life. I am thinking again of another oldy.
  23. I asked him that and he said they use animals until they are of no use, then they throw them away. I think it is also povity in the country side and conditions people are living in. He bought his house with its two foot stone walls for $20,000 and a quarter of that went for bribes! He is in a small village 4 hours from Madrid, he was also teaching English has done for years, he is also an artist. He would love to come home but he cant bring his dogs so he stays. ps to say I told him about my Fauves and I would love to see them in action in Spain, he was disgusted with me! I have seen pics of Spanish Fauves and French Fauves they all looked in wonderful condition and well loved. That's why I couldn't understand what he told me about hunting dogs. The thought of gentle Fauves being badly treated is awful as well. Ive seen vids of a pack chasing a scent and singing its wonderful.
  24. So over two weeks and she is on steroids and bouncing off the walls, really back to her real self, her back legs are a bit wonky and her bark is going but she Is so much happier. I tried cutting her steroids down to one every two days and she went down hill fast, so its one a day and live everyday at a time. She is eating everything in sight as well but isn't putting any weight on. I thought you all would like to know its goodish news for now. :)
  25. Oh I miss my Bob so much, I do think I see him now and then, just at the edge of my eye I see him. I also miss all of my ratties as well, they give so much squishy love its hard not to miss them. Now with Anna not well Its a bit sad here today. But Anna is happy. I gave her the yogurt container and she loves her greek yogurt.
