Looking For A Little Lap Dog
_PL_ replied to mackiemad's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
OMG she is beautiful!!!  Her coat will come in with good care and food. Silky hair gets brittle and breaks off like people hair when they don't get decent nutrition, fleas don't help either. I've had to shave some poor little buggers right back to the skin and it's always come back in nicely unless the dog is elderly with thyroid or cushings type problems. Won't be long before she looks amaaaazing. And a nice short trim will limit the amount of grooming for aunty but keep an eye around Betty's mouth and under her eyes (and bottom) which will need a bit of tidying between grooms because sometimes they get a bit grotty. If you know a groomer then all the better! I'm so happy for Aunty and Betty. Well done on your matchmaking. :) -
Thank you for the answers! :) What has sparked my interest is a new pound guy here. He looks like a steroid silky. 10++kg of pure muscle. And when he had the opportunity to get to a rat it was incredible and nothing like a Silky, nothing like any of the large dogs i've rescued. And nothing like any of the small terriers & terrier crosses I've had who are keen ratters in their own right. He just became a completely different animal. The sound was deep and loud like hounds baying on hunt and he was sooo much stronger than his size suggests. Nothing else mattered. He's otherwise sweet, manageable, docile, now crate trained, not DA or HA and honestly, I'm not going to try 'guess the breed' or tell myself or any adopter that he can be trained out of this prey thing because (as Maddy knows :) ) you have to rehome them into appropriate homes and that means no guesswork. But I'm just absolutely fascinated with who he is and what he does. With the types and levels of 'prey drive' or hunting instinct in different breeds and how people manage, work, train or redirect much larger dogs than him. Thankfully his legs are too stumpy to jump even a 4ft fence and he'll never be able to drag my fat butt after a wallaby. btw 3kg Tyson as size comparison: And Harold my bighead dude still healing under his eyes, he came in with dirty crusted goober glued there.

Sorry to hijack because I was going to ask a similar thing. Is true prey drive something you can control/train? I thought it was innate to certain breeds and basically hard-wired into them. Separate to the self rewarding term. Deaf to any input like 'leave it' or attempted physical distractions. Silly question maybe but it's a simple version of what the thread would have been.

Boston Terrier Needs Special Home
_PL_ replied to HazyWal's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
She is divine, poor little thing. I hope she's home with a volunteer all warm and cosy. The donation section has this for her. Major surgery for severe patella displacement; xrays; surgery; anaesthetic; lengthy hospitalisation; antibiotic & anti inflammatory injections; pain relief patches; suture pack; epidural; morphine; antibiotic and ant inflammatory tablets; pain relief injections; bandages edit: I see they have a foster program :) :) :) -
I think there was someone in Aus breeding/selling lilac british bulldogs for around that much? Maybe more.
-
Like the other thread, joining the breeder's section would be most helpful. :)

x 2 x 3 but I didn't want to be the one to say it.

Awesome stuff :)

She is thriving! funny little girl. I was rehabbing her on behalf of another rescue because I'm a sucker for special needs but I like to think she chose me LOL. And they decided to permanently place her with a lovely lovely lovely couple who quizzed me aaalllll about her and asked for the photo record. The thread is gone now But I'll always have a spot for her in my heart. Couldn't have hoped for a better outcome. They may have taken her home to the owners which is a shame but we don't know if things are going on behind the scenes re welfare action of if the dog is struggling with illness. Normally I wouldn't suggest randomly contacting an AWL Officer - Animal Welfare League, same powers as RSPCA - but maybe you should just for a chat and peace of mind. Nobody can give you private info of current investigations (if there is one) but maybe it will help you make sense of things or they may give the vet a bell about the outcome. :)

edit: Sorry, looks like they've updated the story with evidence seized.

Pet Industry Peak Body In Turmoil After Consumers Misled
_PL_ replied to _PL_'s topic in In The News
Yes! And stopping pet stores selling live animals .... ok so then you give puppy breeders an advantage because they can sell direct? Fix it. We have states who can force someone to get a permit for a second dog then turn around and allow puppy farmers to run absolutely legally with the right paperwork. It's ridiculous. -
I'm on the fence. Some people don't seem interested in controlling their dogs at all. And I feel sorry for tiny breed baby puppies getting rushed by big dogs 'just saying hello' when they actually looked like they were having evil thoughts. I did go to one event where the on-leash rule was enforced by a wandering ranger. I still got my leg peed on a few times by dogs that were on lead, but doing their own thing while owners chatted. Eewww, lesson not to stand still too long which was a shame because the stalls were great. The crotch sniffers were out in force as usual.

They are awesome! So accurate. I need the 'I am blind' though. :-/

That makes it even worse in my view - she was already claiming they didn't source from puppy farms so should have been scrupulous in checking their sources. However we all know it is total BS anyway as no breeder worth their salt would sell to a pet shop Of course she knew. She must think people are as stupid as her. There is no way on earth that you can get a constant stream of 8wk old fluffy puppies and not for one moment realise that they aren't just growing on trees out the back of granny's house. I worked in a pet store in my 20's and I 100% guarantee that you know where pups come from even if you get them from one the slimy dealers who take orders and do the laundering for the farmers. They ALL know where their dogs come from. -
In case you haven't seen it. “The allegations and subsequent threats made against council and staff are of a very serious nature and must be investigated fully,” :( Nutters at it again I suspect. http://www.areanews.com.au/story/3245948/death-at-pound/?cs=670

It looks like a nice little place. It's probably best if they lock their animals securely away at night in dog proof runs from now on. Last attack was apparently a dog flying past the groundskeeper and attacking, so nothing much to do with fences. Just human error. And it's pretty disgusting that there's enough roaming dogs nearby for two fatal attacks.

Sorry T, it's never easy. I'm sure you're still expecting to see her in her favourite places. RIP Zeddy, always remembered.

You mean to report the owners to RSPCA or rescues getting ants in their pants about getting themselves some white fluffy babies? The main thing is that people get badgered about desexing etc so they just lie and say they will have it done. 'Rescues' do the same thing so it's not exclusive to oops and byb. It's pricey and getting a litter done adds up to a hefty bill. You never fully recoup the expenses especially when hand raising. If they are serious I usually just say; OK, if you're genuine then feel free to copy&paste our adoption inquiry form questions, guarantee to take dogs back if it doesn't work out and don't use a desex cert with your full vetwork. Get it all done at 12 - 16 wks.... or later if the pups are older when leaving home. :) I'm sure you'll be able to offer some moral support Perse.

How long and what for? Are you still using it now? Corticosteroids are useful, not 'bad' just not a cure-all. The endocrine system is finely balanced, usage is a risk vs benefit decision. For example; while you get a good result w/ rapid relief of skin inflammation - you can't just use it every time a dog gets itchy. Diabetes can happen rarely and most often is the result of prolonged use so vets are mindful of that when prescribing.

Thank you for posting Boronia. :) Sooooo glad it's coming out in the open, and that people are being called out for what they are. For the longest time any accusations were easily refuted as fiction because of the loony fringe in animal activism. ^^^^ As I said, PA and AAPDB waiting to pick up members. PIAA member cancellation is nothing and will just bring the puppy farmers closer together. Somehow I completely missed Kate Schoeffel being outed though! btw At a yearly event, the man in the seat next to me introduced himself then immediately tried to give me Jo Sillince's business card, not his own. He took an award home that night and I was left wondering how many seemingly normal, dog loving people and businesses are members and support the denialist propaganda. -
That stepping thing with his back legs is unusual! I would have said seizurey or neuorological, it doesn't look like any classic ataxia I've seen but dogs always like to make life interesting (and worrying) so you never know. :) Could it be low blood sugar? They do go a bit like that if hypoglycaemic. I keep some glucose powder in the cupboard just in case.

Good point Gallomph :) Can't remember where but someone wrote their experience here once, it was remote (VIC or Qld) and the deal was that you let the pound know but they were ok if you held the dog (as long as they knew about it) because there was so much distance involved... and I suppose you'd just be taking the far away from where it originally strayed. Very different to other places where there is more convenient access to the pound system but people make up excuses not to use it. I admit we are lucky with Sydney pounds, Australia wide we still have pounds run below even basic conditions and operating almost as if they are determined to make sure the animal is not reclaimed or rescued. Which gives people no motivation to follow the law.
-
What drives me up the wall is people taking dogs to the vet for a scan. No chip; they get sent home with the dog and they just keep it or give it away. If you arc up, there's 'oh i suppose you want the dog to die' (direct quote from a rescuer) or 'the owners don't deserve the dog back because if they were responsible, it would be microchipped'. If it were one of mine, firstly they have ID etc, failing that I'd want my dog's photo posted everywhere with a note saying the dog has been dropped off at the pound already. And if not, and I could trace it back to the original finder there would be hell to pay for everyone who had their hands on my dog and did the worst most irresponsible thing there is.

Cyclosporine has been a blessing for my itchy old boy. He is 'normal' now :) We rescued him older, itchy, and with great lumps of hair pulled out. We tried everything and he was still unhappy. Itchy and very cranky. Recurrent smelly greasy yeasty skin as well. The frustration of patiently treating and trialling (and thinking you've hit a winner but it's only temporary) like exclusion diets, shampoos, lotions, herbal stuff, antibiotics, antihistamines etc was, I suppose - worth a go when you consider the possible side effects but for Hamish aka Haystack lol, cyclosporine has been incredible. He's come down to 1ml every 2nd day and has never looked better and never been happier or more playful. As a bonus; his sudden bad reactions to food (like a colitis attack) are also pretty much zero so I can only assume he had an immune mediated condition lurking like IBD as well because even when we found a diet he could handle he would still get bouts.
