  1. Its a great facility. I have been there for a tour. But I will not be leaving my dogs there. I don't want my dogs staying in a kennel with dogs that they have never met, and they are not supervised. I realise that they can have their own enclosure. But I can't afford the price. I use Akuna Care, located at Abermain. They do pick ups & delivery to the Central Coast. The owners are awesome, they too have a lovely facility & they understand dogs and their behaviour.
  2. I had a client in puppy classes who was pulled over by police as she stopped beside them at some traffic lights. Her puppy was unrestrained in the car with her. They advised her of the law & that next time it would be $300 fine. I now advise this in each new puppy class
  3. Very sad news. I had to make the hard decision on Thursday afternoon to have my beautiful Tango PTS. She is now running pain free. with her mother & brother. At 12.5 yrs it was so hard for her to overcome this awful disease process. When I came home to check on her at lunchtime she looked miserable. It was then I decided she had given me enough & as a family we decided to let her go. Her PCV again had dropped to 14 after going up to 16 on Monday. Tango has given me & my family much love & pleasure. Thankyou for all you help & support.
  4. Thanks Red Dog NZ....I was all set to say goodbye to my girl yesterday after her PCV dropped from 19 to 14 in 2 days. On Monday it had gone up to 16....so we decided to play it week by week & wait & see what happens with the meds. She is on Imuran, cylosporin. cotrisone, AB's & a gut protectant - Losec tabs. She should be rattling!! She is eating & following me around, so I am just enjoying her & spoiling her while I can.
  5. I know this is an old post but I have been looking for some good news Gosh....wish I didn't read this post now. My old girl - 12.5yr old Std Poodle was diagnosed with IMHA last Saturday. I am a VN of 20yrs & I know that stats ;) ....I was hoping for more than a few survival stories here. I am struggling with the inevitable decision that I feel is looming Tango's PCV was 19.5 yesterday. I will test again tomorrow....I know it will have dropped...she is not eating match today & her urine looks more concentrated. But still happy to follow me around & will try & rush up to her food bowl if the cats try & eat her meat!
  6. In NSW I have.... .....POODLE....I love it, it always makes me smile. It was a gift from my husband. Now I would hate to let it go.....its my one treat!
  7. Working in a veterinary hospital - you see the best AND utterly horrible in humans....... And everything in between!
  8. We have 3 Std Poodles that we usually take on holidays with us!!! So we mostly camp I love going to Bonnie Hills Caravan Park (20mins out of Port Macquarie)...we get a powered site, right near the path to the beach, that overlooks the beach, where I take the dogs! State Forest in Barrington Tops - camp Cabins in the bush at Turon Gates, near Lithgow, that allow dogs inside & out....my fav for the bit of luxury of not having to set up the tent!!!
  9. If you are are worried about GDV or bloat you need to take care in when & how you feed. I have had 2 bitches that have had 3 episodes of bloat & survived, and I take all care.....but this terrible condition just happens. But my breed is predisposed to it (std poodles) I always feed in the morning when the dogs are calm & never, ever give any food after midday, no bones or dry food...nothing! They get walked or exercised in the afternoon. This is just my thing I do.....as I want all food to have had a chance to digest before I go to bed & after hours emegency fees apply at vet hospitals. Most GDV's do occur after hours in the middle of the night. "Stressy" or nervous individuals of those breeds predisposed to bloating are also more likely to bloat as are older animals. The is also thought to be a genetic link. My 2 were mother & daughter......and they both suffered GDV when they were 8 & 9years.
  10. I fell hard for the clowns of the dog world 20yrs ago........... THE POODLE! I needed a dog to love after a natsy, life changing experience with a dog that I hand raised from 5 days. I love that they need to be part of the family, l love their fun nature, I love training them - they are so eager to please - even when they do a lap of the agility training ground.....just so everyone can see how fast they can run :D I love how beautiful they look ;) .......nothing better for me than a beautiful Std in continental trim moving/dancing in the show ring.
  11. Austen - she will give up.....especially when I go out there and tell her to SHUT UP . Its not too bad......its just that single Ruff.......Rufff.....every 2mins, with her silly poodle nose pressed on the wire. It is not every day, but random.... Worse at the moment as the girls have 3 five weeks old babies clucking around with them!!! so the old dogs interest is way up!
  12. I converted my aviary into a chook enclosure for my pekin bantams. I have 3 std poodles ranging 4yrs to 12yrs, my poo's love to sit & stare at the "girls".....it depends on the day but my 12yo poo will bark at the pen, it drives me nuts We have only only one unfortunate incident (i was interstate for the weekend ) it involved my 11yrold daughter thinking she had shut the gate properly. That was all my 5yo bitch needed It is 12mths since the girls have been in the aviary, but I would not trust the bird-dogs as far as I could throw them PS We love the eggs we get!
  13. Just a quick add on..... please, please, please......buckle, tether or secure your dog in the car by what ever means. I work at an emergency vet hospital & yesterday a 6mth old border collie pup came in after it had jumped out the car window it was travelling in & was hit by the car behind. It had to be put to sleep.
  14. "Humping" is a normal dog behaviour! Do you really think you can stop it!......Yes, you can train your dog to do behaviours to distract him/her when they are doing normal canine behaviours that you may not like. ie Come, sit, look at me! My dogs take turns in humping each other....usually the bitches! one of my bitches will hump my male as well. I don't have have a problem with it & I certainly don't watch them 24hrs a day! They don't do this behaviour away from the home, I keep my dogs out of others dogs faces whilst at the off lead park. I just assumed that was good canine/owner manners. :D
  15. I thought I would share this here.......I had a weekend away last week with the family & our 2 Std Poodles. We stayed at Turon Gates @ Capertee in NSW 50kms from Lithgow. It is a private property on 6000 acres with camping & cabins. They are very pet friendly. Dogs are allowed in the cabins & it was also very comfortable and well equipped for humans My dogs had a great weekend of head down, bum up following around lots of exciting scents in the bush collecting firewood with me!! & then loungging by the fire at nite
  16. Std Poodle Std Poodle Std Poodle Weim Std Poodle Doberman Std Poodle Afghan Std Poodle . . . one day I would like something small........like a Toy Poodle
  17. I feel for you Cassie.......my girl was at the vets 3 weeks ago after I found her bloated in the morning. This was her 2nd episode...the first was 3 years ago & that was emergency at 2am. She was unabled to be "tubed" so had to have surgery to decompress the gas & untwist the stomach, which was then secured to her abdominal wall (stapled & stitched), a gastopexy. Her nickname after this procedure was the "gold-plated poodle" I am of the belief that the only reason that the 2nd bloat didn't kill her, as she was not in my room overnite, was the fact that her stomach was unable to twist......but when I found her she was very uncomfortable & blown up. The vet sedated her & passed a tube easily into her stomach which decompressed the gas. It has taken her a good 2 weeks to recover, but she is also 11years old. I would be watching your Hudson like a hawke for the next few days!! Fifi was right on the money with the description of the sypmtoms. Once experienced....never forgotton. My other 2 Stds here will be having prophylactic gastopexy's.....even though they have not bloated, nor are they related to my other girl. It just such an awful, horrible condition. Good Luck....sorry for the waffle
  18. At the Vet Hospital where I worked in Sydney we always sent a condolence card the next day & also a donation was made in the pets name to various medical research organisations for animals. A certificate stating this is sent a couple of weeks later. The feedback from owners was lovely & they very much appreciated it. As a business, this is done in order to keep the client. Research shows that when a pet dies or is euthed at the vets, they will then avoid using that vet clinic for any future pets, due to the sad association.
  19. Gorgeous pics......she looks like such a fun dog. I love greyhounds & would love we if I didn't have the Std Poodles. They call poodles the clowns of the dog world....but I reckon that greyhounds must come a close second. ( I mean that in the most complimentry way!......before anyone tells me how clever they are!!)
  20. Thats what lots of people said Snoopy :D I don't have to worry about Fudge lasting forever.......Poo's need regular trimming & I can clip it out
  21. She ended up looking like a grubby poodle for a fews months ;) the ears took the longest to grow out! If look about ten pages back in the poodle thread, one of the poo's was dyed using Fudge Paintbox dyes....that is what I am going to try next  Not sure, but the uptake of the dyes may be more dramatic in the poo's as of the type of their coat!
