Snot Dramas.

It started New Years day, I woke up and instantly knew something was wrong with him, he was sitting all funny and didn't seem *right*.

I suspected a blockage, the night before he swallowed a dried lamb treat (whole ) On the way to work that morning he started randomly screaming out in pain, when I could finally get an appointment at a vet (after trying all morning to get him in somewhere!) they had to put him under anesthetic to check him out properly because every time they touched him he would let out these blood curdling screams (tearing my heart out in the process :o ) they took X-rays and put a tube into his stomach to check for blockages. Everything came back normal and by the time I picked him up he almost seemed better :D . They suspected a pinched nerve, sent him home with painkillers and ordered strict rest for 7 days. If it was to happen again they gave me his Xrays to take and said I would need to see a specialist. By nights end you wouldn't have thought anything had been wrong with him at all.

Two days passed and he was completely normal until... he woke me up at around midnight crying softly and staggering around my room awkwardly, it took me 2 hours to finally settle him. I made an appointment with the specialist at 2pm (the first available one they had) but by 10am that morning he was just lying there, really listless, couldn't stand, wouldn't drink and was knuckling over on his paws :scared:

I was crying my eyes out and ended up rushing him to the emergency vets. The specialist there checked him over and was a little baffled as to what could be wrong. I had to leave him there (which was sooo hard to do ) He has blood tests and was also tested for a suspected case of meningitis. They started treating him for meningitis on the spot but in the morning his test results came back clear. The next lot of tests he had to be put under anesthetic again (third time in one week!) and had a dye injected into his neck/spine/head area which showed up any abnormality's that the X-rays wouldn't and finally they had a diagnosis! A compressed disc in his neck... they zonked him out on painkillers and he had to stay at the vets again. I had a lengthy discussions with his vet about treatments, in 40% of cases this type of problem can actually heal by itself.

The other option was expensive surgery to have the disc matter removed (on top of the few thousand it had already cost me) :)

I decided to take him home for the weekend for a bit of TLC but unfortunately he didn't make any improvements at all...

He was in an obvious amount of pain, still dragging his feet/knuckling over/falling over

So on Monday morning he went back into the vets and had spinal surgery done that same afternoon..

The operation went well, I picked him up tonight and he is a much much happier dog already. The vet seems to think he will make a full recovery :cheer: Strict crate rest for 6-8 weeks which is going to drive us both insane I'm sure. He was already trying to charge around the house when we got home *cringe* It's so unbelievably good to have him home again though, it has been an emotional roller coaster ride!

I haven't cried so much in my life, so bloodly stressful.

Big thanks for all the support, especially the Frenchie peeps and to those who left comments on my facebook. Much much MUCH appreciated

Oh dear. Poor Snot :D.

Poor you, Disorder. I know exactly what you mean when they scream with pain and you can't do anything to fix it there and then. It is awful and I felt your pain at the description.

I am glad it is something that li'l snot will likely recover from and I hope he does so quickly, and never looks back :).

Funny little sticky note taped onto his side .

What a traumatic time for you, disorder. So glad his op went well and he is on the road to recovery.

Now to get through the next 6 weeks trying to keep him quiet. :D

That looks like some hardcore opiates to me. Come on Snot, drugs are bad, mkay.

Awwww he is incredibly cute - especially in that pic with the post-it note LOL What a sweetheart!

It must have been awful to go through - I hate seeing my dogs in even the slightest pain, let alone something really bad. Poor loves.

PS I have a friend who has a cat named Snot. The cat came into his life after the cat migrated over from a neighbours house and decided he liked it better with my friend. After a while the neighbour told him he might as well keep him. But from the get go he named the cat Snot and ever since whenever anyone asks him what his cats name is he'd say Snot - 'snot my cat.

Cracks me up everytime

Thanks guys :D

Yeah, he has been on a LOT of different drugs for pain relief. The second time it happened they had him all drugged out on methadone!

My little junkie baby.. Hes also on Tramal 3 times daily, - hes going to be all sorts of strung out when those are gone

Aww poor little Snot.

If it helps to ease your stress a little I know of a Beagle that had almost exactly the same problem as your boy. She had surgery and 6 months down the track - or earlier, you would not know that she had had a problem. She ran played etc as per normal.

Do you have any ideas what he may have done?

Hugs to you and Snot.
