Urgent Dog In Distress

Ollie started panting and it has been getting worse for about the last 20 minutes...

He is restless and his gums are almost white...

It is almost like he is frightened and his heart is beating quite fast...

He keeps trying to hide in my room then he comes looking for me...

I cannot get a hold of the emergency vet...

I don't know what else to do - I have been sitting with him but he keeps getting up and moving - it is like he is in pain...

For the record, he is MCT grade 2 cancer... post dxd 5+ years

Any advice would be appreciated on how I can help him settle so he starts breathing better and his heartbeat slows

I am sure I can get the vet tomorrow but they are not answering at the moment

I agree you need a vet ASAP...But maybe you can give him some rescue remedy and some massage....Do you know anything like Tellington Jones massage or just quiet circular motions. If you think it is gut related we use pressure points on the stifle when we think our dogs are going into "bloat". If you are no good with pressure points, just rub the general area of the stifle in circular motions on the inside. If the dog passes flatulence it is working. It also has a calming effect. We also use this on horses with colic.

That really works for us......

Just keep ringing vets. thinking of you I hope everything goes OK

Thanks guys, I have just been hunting around the yard to see if there were any cane toads or anything that could stress him like this.

I really think it is pain - just a gut feeling but honestly he has outlived everything the vets and specialist said by more than 4 years now...

I gave him some rescue remedy about 15 minutes ago and he is sitting now, still panting but at least he is sitting and not as freaked out...

I will stay up with him and if his condition does not get any worse we will call our vet first thing tomorrow but if it does I will call SASH and see what they say (but really there is not much anyone can do for him without seeing a vet, if he needs treatment}

Fingers crossed for my lovely old man...

I'm truly not dumping on you, but white gums - why are you not out the door driving to the first vet you can find open? Even if it was 500km's away.

White gums can mean shock (i.e. he's not getting enough oxygen)...it can be caused by blood loss, a blood infection, trauma or heart failure. You're now running the risk of low blood sugar.

This is not something you should "wait and see" about.

Best of luck and hope everything turns out for the best.

Do you have any other on call vets you can ring? Even a horse vet should have painkillers that will work on a dog and most have a bit of experience with dogs, they will come to you but it costs of course. Most vets will give you advice over the phone either way so I'd try other emergency vets too.

Maybe try this number:

Emergency Hours

Homebush

Monday - Friday 6pm - 8am

All weekend : 5pm Friday - 8am Monday

CALL : 02 9758 8666

click for location details

Baulkham Hills

7 days a week 7pm - 8am

All weekend : 7pm Friday - 8am Monday

CALL : 02 9639 7744

click for location details

Both clinics are open 24 hours on public holidays

I know you can't get to them but they can at least give you advice hopefully?

Guys all the places you are listing are in Sydney - Far North Coast is over 1000km away

Hope your guy is ok. I Know none of our local vets are open and the nearest vet would be the one Mish listed which could take several hrs given the traffic which is on the Pacific Highway at the moment - Bumper to bumper from the border to Brisbane.

You are right, defiantly not a good time to be on the highway, I would still call them thou and they may be able to give you some help over the phone.
